Because what cable company wants to just provide bandwidth...
(old news - 07:13PM Thursday Oct 05 2006)
Gizmodo has more detail on the upcoming Comcast Digital music store, accessible via set-top box or PC, which is supposed to launch before the end of the month. For PC, files will be encoded in mp4/m4p and Flash format. Set-top box files will be encoded "in some sort of MPEG (2 or 4, we're not sure)" format, offers the gadget blog.

Comcast obtained a trademark for the brand "Anyplay" on September 5, to be used for "broadcasting and streaming of audio, video and data to portable electronic devices," and "entertainment services; television-programming services." The filing also allows the brand to be used for portable devices, leading to obvious speculation over a portable Comcast media device.

guess enough is never enough

...so Comcast's Rhapsody just wasn't enough because it's not theirs??? ...be willing to bet this isn't nearly as good as Rhapsody for music

Even though I'm not a Comcast customer, I don't think I'd go for such a thing. For music, I can still stream Rhapsody thank you very much.

Rhapsody sucks for the older stuff, about 60% of the classics are remakes, not stuff you'd hear on the radio at the time they were popular.(non originals)

edit: what ever happened to that streaming audio(altho at 64kbps) that comcast subs had access to on musicchoice.com?

It is still available. I just accessed it to make sure. You just login with your Comcast email id and pw.

Think of the possibilities if they actually control the speed at the head end and let you download full bore what ever is available from their service. Might actually be a worthwhile venture for them.

I some how see this tying into the MS ipod competitor.

Adelphia had something like this...

And the download speeds were extremely fast for absolutely anything you wanted, the selection was quite good, and the price was okay.

The only downside (major) was the over-restrictive DRM and now that Adelphia is gone, there are a few songs I cannot find anywhere, and cannot convert to another format at this point.

So the service idea is good; but DRM slaughters consumer interest for this music distribution method in long-run.

The non-PC part doesn't sound very new

Comcast already lets you buy video to watch over a set-top box. It's called pay-per-view.

net neutrality

and when they get this they slow down or block all other services and you can only buy your music from them. the consumer loses again.

So are you saying this because you confused SBC/AT&T with Comcast or are you saying this because Comcast is the devil?

Care to site anything that lends credence to your assertion that Comcasts intent is to block out others (thus ignoring all the pissed off Itunes users and the bad PR that would accompany being the first ISP retarded enough to do so) or are you just parroting nonsense someone else came up with?

@optonline.net

Another example of a user expecting the cable companies to invest Billions of dollars in their network with no monetary reward.

Short of blocking a service, which none of the network service providers will do since the competition would steal a huge chunk of business, I cant understand why anyone has issues with preferential treatment of packets.

Does Google post results in a premium spot for paid advertisers? Why shouldn't the cable companies get the option of a premium service as well.

What's ironic is this is nothing more than an SLA which have been around UNCONTESTED for years.
