Houston setting up solar powered Wi-Fi parking system
(old news - 12:29PM Thursday Sep 21 2006)
tags: wireless
Daily Wireless reports that Houston has ordered 750 solar powered electronic parking meters for a 1.9 mile area of downtown capable of accepting credit cards, coins and paper currency as well as providing maps of the surrounding areas. WFI will design and deploy the dedicated 802.11g WiFi network, the first of its kind, to support the parking meters. It's the first system in the country that relies on a Wi-Fi network instead of a cellular network.

What if they get hacked?

802.11g is MUCH more familiar to people, and therefore MUCH easier to hack than cellular. I bet some kids are going to hack them just for fun.....

My guess is that they will just be completely stolen and not hacked.

Umm.. Script kiddies would need to hack the encryption not the transport method. I'd hope those meters are using WPA-PSK at the very least.

Whoever vendor that thought of this is a genius AFAIK.

Knowing that a government entity is involved...It will probably be WEP.

Nope, not using my credit card on that machine.

Yes, definitely, seeing as all credit cards issued make you responsible for zero fradulent charges. It would be unthinkable to transmit your credit card info through a method that could potentially expose it to people who could copy it.

You know every time you give your credit card to a waiter at a restaurant, you run the risk of them having a card skimmer in their pocket, right?

Just checking.

Or they can simply copy your card info down on paper.

One place I worked at, we had to go in a little back closet to do the cards. Perfect if someone wanted to do that.

Same people who cry wolf over fraud make it easier for fraud to occur. I liked the idea of simply having it be solar powered. But this is just useless in so many ways. Kind of like those billboards which are actually huge screens which only display an image and 10 seconds later rolls back to another. Sure more ads on the same billboard but the electricity to run that huge screen makes it worthless. Not only that it can get more easily damaged because it's out in the open.

Most Internet credit card machines use a secure connection (SSL) to pass on the data...hacking (sniffing really) isn't going to get them much.

Re: Just one more reason...

After 30 years I've decided only the weather is worse than the traffic.

And why is it we get wireless parking meters, but not a reasonably priced wireless network?

same reason Austin and San An gets tech and internet speed upgrades long before we even see anything here and population Austin and San Antonio 1.25 Mill each. yet we have shy of twice their population (more if you count the towns around here that call themselves Houston sometimes) and get parking meters ^_^

As far as payment goes...

I'd rather use a Park-by-Phone system - more convenient, too.

In Aspen Colorado their machines accept credit card, and a 'gift card' type thing you can buy to use on them. Not sure how that is done though.

Interference?

How will they deal with situations where the building the meter is in front of has an access point on the same frequency and interferes with the meter? Remember that the city can't regulate 9-2.11b usage or require others to quit using 802.11b even if it interferes with the meter.
