Fon Unveils $5 RouterThe 'revolution' smolders on with 'La Fonera' ( old news - 01:51PM Tuesday Sep 19 2006) tags: business · wireless · hardware · worldIf you recall, startup Fon aimed to build a global network of one million wireless hotspots by the end of four years. The idea was to convince users to install Fon firmware on their Linksys residential routers, turning them into a unified community of global hotspots. As of June, 54,000 users had signed up to be "Foneros". The Spain based operation offered three levels of participation: "Bill" users get a cut of whatever profit is made via their hotspot but cannot use other Fon hotspots for free. "Linus" users get to use any hotspot, anywhere, for free. "Aliens" are just customers, and pay to access to the hotspots. The somewhat original idea (see Linspot) received a lot of hype from bloggers with financial ties to the project last winter (See WSJ, 2/9/06). Hefty investment from Google and Skype (to the tune of $21 million) fueled the fire, and Fon became larger than life for a short while. Since then, the project has been comparatively quiet. One problem Fon faced was that real providers have cherry-picked the best wireless locations (not that your Dayton suburb window-sill isn't lovely). Those areas are also already flooded with routers from the nation's largest, free ISP: linksys, and increased 3G deployment. ISPs also aren't thrilled with the idea of their bandwidth being re-sold, and Fon likely violates your contract with your service provider. Even the Wi-Fi friendly Speakeasy told the company to back off when Fon cited a non-existent business relationship. Back in June, we noticed the company started offering either a Linksys WRT54GL or Buffalo WHRG54S for only $1, with Fon firmware installed. To prevent people from buying the router and simply flashing it with third party firmware, users were forced to register it and swear allegiance to the company mantra. Though that deal has expired, the subsidizing of Fon's "revolution" continues. Fon has finally shifted away from firmware flashing and has released their own $5 router. The new device, named "La Fonera", is made by Taiwanese networking vendor Accton Technology, and is explained in this video by Fon founder Martin Varsavsky. Related:- Broadband iPhone: Q1 '08

That's what I did. I got the Linksys in the mail, registered it, and prompltly reflashed it with DDWRT. The FON software sucks ass, the thing would drop it's connection every 5 minutes. I ordered another one with my dads business address, and sold it to some guy for $40. -- Start the Revolution, download Opera, »www.opera.com

| I signed up when they had the $1 router at beginning of the summer. I kept it active in the heart of downtown milwaukee for 4 months. NOT one person in that whole time connected/paid to use my net ($3/day). Anywho, they had a software update. I flashed it, bricked the router. I de-bricked it, re-flashed teh orignal firmware they sent with it, bricked it again. Flashed a older one, same. Flashed DD-WRT, worked like a charm. Their crappy firmware is what caused me to take down mine. -- Do the Do! | |

| More overseas consumer networking products, sigh I am not pro-American in any way, but based on my experienced with numerous consumer/household router vendors (D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, SMC, and 3Com), I am very much against any Taiwanese company maintaining the firmware my router uses. The code is awful, bugs are everywhere, there's obviously no QA/testing done, and there's absolutely zero responsibility required for maintaining the product.
I often wonder how non-English-speaking/reading cultures can comprehend RFCs or technical specifications such as IP and TCP. (As someone who's white and took 5 years of Mandarin, I feel I'm quite justified in stating something this bold) -- Making life hard for others since 1977.

| Re: More overseas consumer networking products, sigh Well the firmware will be maintained by fon people, as far as hardware those us made routers almost all use chips made in taiwan or other asia country. The firmware is written by the people from linksysinfo and dd-wrt projects, so it's waay better then anything stock | |

| Re: An idea whose time will never come Unless they can provide some kind of centralised logging of users and IP use, this can be a security issue. Regardless of the fact that I am very passionate about on-line privacy, I would just feel much more comfortable if FON was keeping logs simply because I know my ISP is keeping logs on my account and would hate to be accused of anything I had no involvement with. | |

| The best defense against the **AA's of the world IS to put up an open access point, but protect your own LAN. Once you ask the **AA to PROVE that YOU were responsible for whatever it is they are accusing you of, and point out there is an open AP on your network, they are screwed and have to drop their case. | |

| Fon violates ISP agreement? Hi there
I am thinking about signing up for Fon. But I was thinking if attaching the Fonera to my cable router might violate my contract with the ISP?
What are your experiences and thoughts?
