Why the sudden change of heart?
(old news - 11:54AM Friday Sep 15 2006)
tags: legal · Fiber · competition · telco · municipal
The voter approved fiber to the home plan in Lafayette, Louisiana has seen no limit of court battles, thanks largely to regional incumbents who don't want the competition. Part of the legal skirmish involved a bond derailing lawsuit by two local plaintiffs, who never actually appeared in court, and whom locals believe were somehow intermediaries for BellSouth and Cox. One of the two recently dropped the case (though it is still headed to the State Supreme Court), and now the Baton Rouge Advocate reports that he is apologizing for his part in the delay.

"It was never my intention to delay the fiber-optic project," Matthew Eastin writes in a letter to Lafayette City-Parish President Joey Durel. In response, Durel wrote: "I have been led to understand for awhile that you had been taken advantage of, and felt it a shame that your name would forever go down in history as having been a part of something that hurt our community so much." It's not entirely clear from the reports what triggered Eastin's change of heart.

too late for apologies

I certainly would not have been as nice as the parish president was to this guy.

Apologies or no, the damage is done. Somebody should point out to this idiot how much additional money was spent defending against his suit. Better yet, send him the bill.

I agree, you will be real sorry when that bill shows up.

Maybe...

It is time for an investigation into Mr. Eastin's financial records to see just how much money he pocketed from the local telco or their astroturf lobby pushers.

The fact that he about faced is pretty good evidence that he wasn't paid off. If he'd gotten a big check he most likely would have stayed the course. From the above quotes it looks like the guy was duped somehow.

What's certain about Darwinism is that it would take less time for (1) a single-celled organism to evolve into a human being through mutation and natural selection than for (2) Darwinists to admit they have no proof of (1) - Ann Coulter

Good point. But I would like to see the lacals legal fees and any other damages be paid for by Mr. Eastin.

Sure, like someone didn't already do that. Here is the most likely scenario for this apology: It sounds like he was pissed off by high utility rates and sued because he didn't want more bonds having to be covered by ratepayers. Someone put the pressure on him and probably threatened him, so he backed down.

Of course I don't know where you get your scenarios from, but if it's where I -think- you get them, your avatar should be a picture of your undershorts instead of a hat.

Re: Maybe...

... says the conpiracy theorist.

I love how conspiracy theorists all think THEIR idea is the ONLY sane one, even though there are dozens of other humdrums explanations to be had that make a lot more sense.

They're right -- the about-face signifies a realization of some sort. If you're being paid off, you're not going to suddenly just change your opinion and lose that payday.

allegedly the check bounced.

The check bounced...that's why he is now "sorry". No money, no funny.

What about the other plaintiff?

Ms. Dummy Naquin needs to drop out of lawsuit as well.

Just a minor correction

The Advocate is a Baton Rouge paper, not Lafayette.

He needs to come clean

He deserves no forgiveness unless he comes clean and makes it public who paid/coerced him to do this. Until then, I hope whatever negative force that has encouraged him to drop out of the suit continues to make this guy's life annoying.

I would sue too.

My property taxes just went up 28% in one year. If my town wanted to piss away my money and give it to business I would file a suit also. Local piss ant politicians get bought off all of the time. When I moved into my house I paid a little over $200 for sewer and water. The local political bosses gave a sweet hart deal to a builder to build a huge free trade zone. They had to quadruple the water treatment plant. I know pay over $1,500.00 for sewer and water.

You don't think that fiber is for the great unwashed do you? It is for the people that put money in the thieving political boss' pockets.
