T-Mobile Readies UMA ServiceSwitch between mobile and Wi-Fi networks ( old news - 03:46PM Friday Sep 08 2006) tags: wirelessYes, we'd like to think we're headed to a future where your cell-phone works over multiple networks when out of the house, and yet makes calls over your home Wi-Fi router when you're at home (for free, while we're lusting). But as CNET explores, that's not quite happening yet, despite the development of UMA tech. As we mentioned, T-Mobile has been running trials of their UMA service last month, and is gearing up for a broader launch this month. You'll be able to switch between the T-Mobile network and Wi-Fi, but you won't just be able to use your home router. T-Mobile is still sitting on many of the details (like pricing), but it appears they'll give you a router from a major player (like Linksys or Netgear), through which you'll be able to pay a flat monthly fee to make calls from home. Later on, the carrier wants to give users access to their 7,836 T-Mobile branded hotspots to make calls. Related:- Delta To Filter In-Flight Broadband

| They're also at FedEx Kinko's and one of the big bookstores--either B&N or Borders, I can never remember. They currently have free weekends for T-mobile users including prepaid subscribers. From the looks of it they'll likely only be giving hotspot voice access to anyone with a UMA plan, and that'll most likely be included in the monthly service cost. Just my guess. -- I cannot stand demagoguery. If you disagree with my stance, you're a blithering twit. You're not a twit, are you? | |

| if you have T-Mobile you get free WiFi Access at any HotSpot, well at least i always have. You just punch in your telephone number and your site password. so for customers that have t-mobile cell phones this would be great because i would rather use my cell phone with my VoIP at home or at a hotspot and it be free (assuming that you have vonage or whatever voip service already) plus then you can cut your plan back a lot and save more money on mins | |

| Re: clever And according to the sketchy details that have been released, you will be paying the flat rate fee for each of those hotspot locations, which will, knowing t-mobile's penchant for overcharging for WiFi, will end up costing you far more than a landline. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. | |

| Re: clever That's not quite correct. The way it works is, you add the UMA calling feature to your regular cell plan. ...and of course, to use that feature, you need to be in the range of a hotspot...initially T-Mobile is requiring that you get your equipment from them, but eventually you will be able to use any hotspot. Either way, there is no fee per location....it's just one monthly fee...if you decide to have equipment in more than one location, you'll need to pay t-mobile for each UMA router you buy. | |

| Re: clever "And users will be able to call anyone over the Wi-Fi home network for a flat fee."
The implication is that they are going to require you to have their equipment at home if you want to use this at home, and charge a monthly fee for the service in addition to the already-too-high cellular service. There is no benefit to them to do it for "free". -- Toolmaster of La Grange.

@comcast.net | How about FREE? Free or low cost router to subscribers, and FREE wifi calls at home.
Probably less strain on T-Mobile cellular networks, because wifi calls are routed over internet???

| Time to buy that MDA... ...or rather the newer one with HSDPA, called MDA Vario II in EU (not available here), originally HTC TyTn aka Hermes (one has a jog wheel):»www.europe.htc.com/products/ Expensive but very cool: WiFi, quad-band, 400MHz CPU, full slide-out QWERTY, Windows Mobile 5.0, runs Skype, anything you can ask for.
The older one is available here under the name MDA from TMO ( Cingular also has it) - it's MDA Vario in EU - and despite its slower Texas CPU it also runs Skype just fine and much cheaper.
Hmmm... this one is cheaper but for the long run HSDPA is a must-have... The newer one just been introduced in Germany, UK, coming in Hungary, Austria, The Netherlands within weeks... hmmm...
