First create a joint venture with four HUGE cable companies (Comcast, Time Warner, Cox, and Brighthouse), and then turn around and enable cable's biggest video competitors to enter the residential ISP business.

| it was just a thought... personally i don't see what all the fuss is about with one company offering different products.. i'd like DirecTV to concentrate on continuing to offer the great TV service that they have(like their DVR, it isn't perfect, so they should concentrate on that)...
as far as the sprint thing... i'm sure news corp could muscle its way into a deal with sprint... | |

| There's always Covad... Hmm, seems like they may be better off just buying a company and Covad comes to mind. They're doing wireless and land based broadband.
Just don't let it die on the vine like Telocity/DirecTV DSL.

| kill_the_taxes.. to pay millions for just a few measley frequencies, just to be gouged by ceullular taxing municipalities on top of it, will make most bow-out of that kind of zero-sum game.
Only if wireless services are UNTAXED will wireless flourish in the bidding process. Otherwise its simple not worth the investment. | |

| Clearwire is not WiMax They have plans to deploy it to replace the leased spectrum they are using today, but currently are not a WiMax operator.
(at least not in production to anyone's knowledge)
Clearwire depends heavily on Intel on potential WiMax who is also in bed with Sprint.
If anything Sprint should buy Clearwire, have them run and deploy the WiMax, while the cell group continues to update the EVDO infrastructure.
Clearwire and WiMax as of today are purely a press release, not much more. | |

| DirecTv is smart! What don't people get? They jacked up the price of the auction - now what? Who ever owns it will have to work hard to sell a profitable product on such an expensive venture. (Remember, this is JUST the spectrum - doesn't include the research and other investment)
So, how profitable will this service be for who ever winds up with it? How do we know that DirecTV doesn't have other plans in store as well?
Maybe there is something to be said of "if I can't have it, no one will".. meaning that they will help push the price so high that the venture will fail for others.

This will definetly put a dent in the checking account of the new owners.. put a drain on their finances. It CAN make it easier for DTV to have a leg up in other areas and do a run around to bolster other products while the new owners are bogged down in a high debt situation slowing their overall growth.
Not to mention, it's a MAJOR expense... will this be the next throw away technology? Could sure be an expensive lesson to learn. | |
