Though backbone aches may spur usage charges
(old news - 09:06AM Friday Aug 11 2006)
tags: Fiber · bandwidth · world
Tipped by Karl Bode See Profile
This Digital World Tokyo report explores one Japanese user's tale of getting a 100Mbps fiber line to his apartment for just $39 a month, less than he was paying for 8Mbps DSL and a landline. The blissful residential speeds are having an impact, however:
"All of this cheap bandwidth is not without problems for the companies providing it. The country's Internet backbone is starting to feel the strain of all these broadband connections. Peak traffic on the major domestic Internet exchanges was hitting 158Gbps at the end of last year, according to the MIC. That's about a third higher than the end of 2004 and about double 2003."
According to the report, the problem is getting so bad, the government may allow ISPs to charge customers based on the amount of data they consume.

Dumb ISPs

Why are they selling a product that they know they cannot deliver?

Fiber does you no good if you have something that amounts to a dialup connection on the backbone end.

Looks like they are starting to use the standard American business philosophy. Sell first, make excuses later. Standard Operating Procedure.

I would love 100 MBPS for $39 bucks

It would be great to get this service for $39 bucks, but I would not want the $4000 a month apartment bill that comes with it.

Upgrade!

They just need to upgrade their core . If you want to promise 100 mbps, make sure you have the bandwidth to back that claim up.

Then the price can no longer be $39. Upgrading the core costs MONEY - DUH!!

U.S. telecom is brilliant!

that's why our connections are so slow compared to other advanced countries - by gradually increasing speeds over many years and in baby steps, U.S. telecom companies are just avoiding straining the backbone!

damn, they're smart! and all this time, I just thought they were greedy, monopolistic bastards!

Heh...and that's 100mbps AND VOIP for $36.

Verizon owns 81% of the nation's fiber to the home customers, according to a new report released today by Ovum-RHK. Granted, the total number of home fiber subscribers isn't that impressive at 463,000
FiOS is Up to 30 Mbps/5 Mbps for $179.95 period. (see »www22.verizon.com/content/consum···ices.htm )

And Heaven help the city that tries to roll out their own fiber...

Depending on the area you live in, the price can be much lower: »[ fiber tech] 30/5 is $54.95!

In my neck of the woods it is $54.95/month. Don't bad mouth FIOS, it's the ONLY product a telco has ever put out lately that is TRULY innovating. Americans don't want or need 100mbps connections. Right now, the sweet spot is 10-20mbps (for geeky people). The average person could get by on 1mbit connections. American broadband is still a baby. We really need to stop trying to make a small child chase women and drive a sports car. We haven't reached that complex of a stage, YET.

This explains it all.

ISPs just want to be able to charge per the megabyte. By giving out all these fast connections that they know will cause backbone problems(why not upgrade them?), and that opens the door to charging for your usage and dropping the unlimited services.
It would be stupid to be making such big gains in the broadband technology and then step back 15 years by charging per the megabyte.

Re: This explains it all.

This isn't a suprise. Prices for fiber have been cheap for a few years. The service is provided mostly by Yahoo and labeled as YahooBB (Yahoo BroadBand). Tokyo has a fiber ring around the whole city and the speeds are incredible! When I was there last summer I downloaded Exchange 2003 from my MSDN account and was getting 800-1000k downloads at a friends house that had the medium/average account. The whole CD took like 15-20 minutes!! There is a huge push to move everyone to fiber and off IDSN which is the way people in Tokyo were before. An 80M account was about $60 before so it's like the cable companies here that are increasing their speeds for the same price its just Tokyo has a much higher speed. I haven't been to other parts of Japan so I don't know how other cities handle the connections or what speeds are.

Re: This explains it all.

I don't think the majority of people recognize that cheap services come at a greater cost. Everyone here wants the most possible bandwidth at the cheapest possible price without recognizing the inherit cost that goes into providing such services.

'Hey it might cost $200 to offer but i want it for $50' Consumers who exhibit the above line of thinking are often the same consumers who whine and bitch when the service turns to shit.

The market for telecommunication products and services should bare the cost of the product plus a reasonable profit for the company.

A core network supporting 158Gbps doesn't operate on $50 Linksys hardware..

I agree with most of your post, except for:

"The market for telecommunication products and services should bare the cost of the product plus a reasonable profit for the company."

What is a reasonable profit? If we put a tag on "reasonable" is it still capitalism? Should there be a definition of "reasonable" or should the market (read: consumers) decide?

I know it might be seen as spliting hairs by some, but these are valid questions.

Re: This explains it all.

R4M0N as a reasonable person, you realize the telecommunications industry represents a competitive marketplace.

A corporation in any industry should sell products with a profit margin that provides an incentive to maintain product quality and enhance future offerings. Providing products at a loss is bad for the economy and even worse for consumers.. (I recall companies represent jobs as well..)

Suckers that's what you get when you try to make someone else look bad. You wind up looking stupid yourself. Japan can keep its 10000000GBPS symmetrical give me 50/10 and I'm ok.

I would not mind if it was per the amount of data I downloaded as long as it is 50/25.

Maybe along the lines of $5 per 1 gigabyte? Might be a bit high, but it might work.

OP: Correction - article says $36 / month, incl. phone

The way I read the article, it said $36 / month, and (IP?) phone service was available at no extra charge.

$36 vs. $39 - typo or different exchange rate used?
