Nudge them towards the annoying website of your choice
(old news - 12:12PM Friday Aug 04 2006)

Boing Boing points to one man's solution for locals who were leeching bandwidth from his wireless router. Instead of getting angry, he divides his network into trusted and untrusted halves. He then sends all untrusted network traffic to Kitten War.com. "Or even better, set up a squid proxy that takes all images coming in to the untrusted segment and turns them upside down before serving them up. Or just make all the images blurry." More entertaining than encryption. Our users have been talking about this idea for several days.

Re: AWESOME!

Is it really "stealing" if you open your door (don't secure your signal), invite people in (you're the one broadcasting the signal), and they don't actually take anything belonging to you that you didn't invite them to take (like, you know, files or something on your network)? Eh, whatever. Have your fun while you can.

Re: AWESOME!

Would you like some cheese with that whine?

Just asking a question, not trying to make an analogy. Here's another question:

If my neighbor's kid tosses a ball around, and it winds up in my yard, and he leaves it there instead of retrieving it, should I throw it back into his yard or should I just throw it into the trash?

(This, too, is a rhetorical question.)

Re: AWESOME!

With either question your stupidity and point is clear.

You in a round about way are trying to say the guy is at fault because he did not "secure" his airwaves. Just because it is there you are not "in the right" to assume it is there for your use.

I and many more, will argue we are not obligated to "lock" our router. It is your responsibility to make sure you can use the things that you do not personally own. If you don't know if you can, then it is your obligation to seek that permission. If you can't seek that permission because you don't know who to ask then you are to continue to assume you are not invited to use it.

Or take a more direct route and simply have it serve up a page that says "HEY PARASITE: GET YOUR OWN #%#$& INTERNET ACCESS!"

At least that way they'd be immediately aware he knows they're leeching off of him. Depending on who's doing it, they're liable to be so stupid they don't realize he's screwing with them and they're bugging Dell tech support and asking them why their "internet is upside down".

We thought of this

We were going to do this at our house, but just got lazy. For anyone who did not have a registered MAC address, all webpages would redirect to an authentication page which would be some variant of goatse, tubgirl or lemonparty. It would however have a box to request registration on the network.

Someday.

Exactly. It's a lot of fun to do these kinds of things it's just the "finding the time" problem that always gets in the way. Personally, I'd love to set up a WiFi AP with extra range just so I could tempt people.

Yes they are. Lemonparty has 3 old men involved in oral sex. That's not porn? Goatse is a dude stretching his anus to an unimaginable width. One could do a colon examination just from that pic. Tubgirl is some Japanese chick lying in a bathtub with her butt in the air and squirting enema waste out of her butt and having it land directly on her face.

Ummm yeah they are....showing genitalia is generally considered a form of porn. Granted it depends on context.
If a teacher can't hold up the picture in class and show it without getting fired or getting in a lot of trouble, you would to.

Simple version, anything that would be considered R rated in a movie for sexual content is going to get you some jail time if you show it to a minor.

Technically no. Police are going so far as to arrest someone for using an unprotected wifi connection. If police are going to pretend it's illegal to access a completely open connection, then the child would have to be arrested.
All this of course despite the fact that windows will automatically connect you to an open wifi connection. Which means if you leave it open, you absolutely know people will end up using it.

Which is why I prefer MAC Auth instead of standard security. MAC and port redirection lets me get the utmost level of control. The only problem is those people who know how to get your actual MAC address and clone it by connecting to your Wi-Fi adapter as either a false infrastructure or via ad-hoc (If the user didn't block it).

Which is why you set up your DHCP server to set up aliased IPs for the address range it manages, then unalias them as it allocates them. That way, even if someone does decide to be smart and snare an IP, they've got competing devices on the network with the same address. Makes usage practically impossible.

i wonder is it illegal to access people's machines that appear on your network? ie if a freeloader gets past even your security can you say start deleting their files.(i found that sometimes Linux samba ignores windows and will bypass access restrictions of network drives from win).

hard thing is they would have to prove that it was your router causing the redirect. that means getting a warrent and seizing your router, by which time you could have reset it to factory settings and basicly eliminated any case they would have.

If I could figure out how to let passersby utilize "some" of my bandwidth, without giving them all my pipe, nor letting them get to pr0n sites and p2p, etcetera... then I would do so... Any ideas? Anyone?

I would, ideally, like for them to do a "courtesy" registration, just so I could keep some kind of stats... I don't mind sharing because "sharing is caring", but I would like to protect myself at the same time...

I have Verizon DSL, with a Wirespeed 327 Modem/Wireless Router. I currently have the wireless disabled.

Down is 3Mb/s, up is 768kb/s, so I think FTP might be out as well... I'm quite well protected by firewall and anti-virus, and I know how to mitigate any network hazards, so I'm not too worried about that; not that I would reject out-of-hand any advice in that arena...

I'm not stingy... So shoot me. I guess I'm going the opposite direction of the guy in the article.

Cheers.

Boo. It's people like you that make me sick.

We need routers with easy to use hotspot firmware, and then you could let people register for free and then they'd get say 500kbps or basically just enough to browse without impacting your performance much (assuming say 3mbit line)

In my neighborhood I find 27 different wireless networks from my house. Unfortunatly most are encrypted. But what I've done in the past is point my 24dB grid towards one of the faster open ones, and then re-broadcast it over my 9dB omni w/ amplifier and call it "freeinet". Hehehe. Or I load up linux and cap some weak packets, but I have enough open networks around here I haven't had to resort to that *much* yet. Although if I was your neighbor and knew you had that attitude I'd probably take a shot at your network :P

You feel "sick" that he feels that since he pays for his connection and noone else does then he is the only one who has the right to use? By your reasoning I guess your neighbors should just be able to use your car whenever they feel like it, I mean it makes them sick just knowing you have a car to drive and expect to be the only person using it....

Gives this guy a thumbs up

I give this guy a thumbs up to a very interesting concept. Just another way to stop the leechers. I keep my wireless network locked down as well. If the neighbors want have access to my network then they can share in the cost. If you can spend a $1,000 for a computer then I think you can spend a couple of dollars to share.

The 3rd party firmware avaiable for the WRT54g allows you to specify an authentication server. Then it is just a matter of you installing the software on a box and setting it up. You could also forgo the router completly and just create a BSD/Linux router that does all sorts of cool things.

captive portal

My WiFi isn't using any type of encryption....

It also will give anyone who wants a IP a dhcp lease.....

BUT try and do any type of DNS query, or connect to anything, and your not going anywhere....

try going to any webpage and you get my captive portal. It's basically a nice way of saying "f*ck off!", but with a username/password prompt. I find it very easy. Once you authenticate to my router, you then have 150kb/150kb access to the net (PLENTY for the quick times i need to use it). If i need to get into my LAN or DMZ, then i start up openvpn (installed on all my laptops). This will let me into my LAN, and redirect all traffic through VPN - which is not speed limited.

I don't care at all about encryption, as i don't do any financial or anything i need to worry about someone getting my information over my wifi network. But again, if i need to, i use the VPN.
