CEO: My, don't we look tasty!
(old news - 06:22PM Thursday Jun 08 2006)
tags: business · telco
In a recent NY Times report, we noted Qwest CEO Richard Notebaert seemed to be fishing for buyers for the telco, judging from his response to this question:
Belson: Might you be more of an acquisition target?
Notebaert: If I looked at it as a consultant or an adviser, I would look at Qwest today and say most of the things that made me uncomfortable before are gon.. Again, the government at every level we're O.K. The debt load's down, profitability's up. Everything's squared away and there's no threat of bankruptcy, which you might have thought about a few years ago. And the company has solid performance characteristics. And it's throwing off good cash. It's profitable. And it's got a wonderful group of employees. So I don't think we're unattractive.
Industry analyst Dave Burstein (of DSLPrime) reports in his latest newsletter that Notebaert and others might be eager to get out, while the gettin' is good. After pointing out the company's troubled financials, he notes: "A more cynical way to look at it is Notebaert and Anschutz are smart enough to sell before cable VOIP, Seattle and Utah municipal networks, and wireless substitution clobber the company."

I don't think so. Verizon is trying to unload the rural areas, New England and some mid-west states. Verizon dumped Hawaii last year. Verizon is going for the high profit densely populated affluent areas. ;-p

The public demanded the Bell System be broken up and now they have it.

The only thing I can possibly see it the government getting involved and declaring a national broadband FIOS is a national security issue. Then all of the former Bell Companies, Bell Labs, Lucent, Avia and Western Electric will be brought together under one holding company. Now what could the name of that holding company be. I KNOW AT&T and associated companies.

I hope they remain

I love the service they offer. I also love the fact they told the NSA to take a hike!

Re: YES Please

I could pretty much agree with you there. The lesser of the two evils would be Verizon. Minnesota won't put up with the crap that AT&T/SBC would try to pull here. Not in a million years.. if you know what they did to Qwest and US West in the past, you'd definetly agree.

Hurry up UTOPIA!

Glad to see they are worried that UTOPIA will not be a failure, despite what some people were trying to say.

who could buy qwest

This would go against Verizon's plans. They don't want rural areas. Plus they're already looking into paying around $48-50 billion for the remaining 45% of VZ Wireless.

Qwest, at $14.6 billion marketcap, will be a tough buy for another fiber carrier.

The buyer won't be at&t, could be a cable company, or even Google.

I don't care who it is as long as they lay fibre to my house and light me up!

Verizon knows if they don't do it someone else will. They could make a lot of money here in Phoenix that's for sure.

It's not the rural area that Verizon would care about.. what makes Qwest attractive to any of the others is the back bone and the crossing in the Washington state area... other than that.. Qwest is crap.

ditto, how about the yeti buying Qwest? I personally bet ATT since they know how to make money out of 14kilobit rural phone lines.

Hey!

Come on BBR, let's all pitch in, buy it ourselves and show them how to really run a company.
