Changes campaign content due to criticism
(old news - 09:18AM Tuesday Jun 06 2006)
tags: legal · Fileswapping · Oddities
We mentioned the entertainment industry was using Captain Copyright to educate kids about piracy and downloading in the classroom, but apparently the campaign has been going through some difficulties. Internet users have not only noticed that the website lifted certain content from Wikipedia, but that there was already a Captain Copyright in Singapore. Techdirt notes that the outfit behind the campaign has been changing content on their website on the fly as they come under criticism.

The irony is not lost on me, but is lifting information from Wikipedia an actual copyright issue? Does not Wikipedia adhere to copyleft - which allows all material to be used and cited by anyone else (as long as they don't place any copyright restrictions on it)...

So while ironic and a perfect example of corporate hypocrisy, I don't think using information from Wikipedia is necessarily counter to their argument (though certainly not helpful without proper attribution).

Re: Delicious

From the Captain Copyright wikipedia article:

For example, it was reported that the Captain Copyright web page uses two quotes about ISBNs from Wikipedia, but fails to follow the requirements of Wikipedia's GNU license by providing a direct link back to the source article or even acknowledging the GNU license as required by Wikipedia.

captain copyright caught copying?

The entertainment industry respects no copyrights except their own! Sometimes I wonder if they are aware that they are not the only ones who own copyrights.

I'd love to see the MPAA or RIAA sued for copying/publishing/distributing something they don't own! Just imagine the field day the lawyers and PR people would have.

Re: captain copyright caught copying?

Every time I see a story like this, I think of Nintendo catching Universal in court on the big lie about King Kong being in the public domain.

That case was a good 25 years ago, and people still haven't learned their lesson. Research, people, research...

Really, they don't even respect those. How many films come out these days with original plots? Most are rehashed from earlier movies. When you see the word 'genre' applied to a new film, you can be sure it really means 'an update to an earlier, similar idea'.

You could make the argument that these ruthless bullies don't legitimately own any copyrights. The music industry is mostly a racket. If you expect any kind of success as an artist, all but only a very select few have any real options other than abiding by the extortion-like tactics of the RIAA's members.

The RIAA just barely skirts the law in some of their practices, and wherever necessary, they can toss gobs of money at politicians to ensure that the laws are modified to benefit and continue their "business" of coercion.

I'd love to see someone call the SPA on them. If nothing else, they'll get a taste of false accusation - as they do for the many grandma's and 10year olds.

I say for every visitor to their site with the violation of copyright, For every student that saw the copyright violation, Fine the MPAA $150,000 per each student and web hit. It's high time a rule was borrowed from the RIAA playbook

WTF message are they really sending out to students..The do as I say not as I do? Talk about lying hypocrites.

One can not expect the scales of justice to apply equally, not when a corrupt system has been bought and paid for by dirty money, which has given' us DMCA,DRM,Sony root kits...etc etc.

In most cases i agree to the, What comes around goes around. However in this instance the outcome has been decided by corporate money,as i do not expect to see (a go around) unfortunately

That is to be expected but I already know someone whose working on it who owns a public radio station. I wish him the best of luck and this is simply more things to his favor. You can never expect the same type of justice in this corrupt government but that does not stop him for at least trying. There shall be a day when the RIAA and MPAA will go down. Until then I am holding off but I support anyone against them.

If you keep on thinking that nothing can be done you will most likely remain that way (unable to do nothing). If you want something changed you will need to put some serious effort into it even when all the cards point to you losing.

Always expect the unexpected.

The same people who are robbing from the customer are robbing the very artists they put on the air and eventually eat off anyone like a leach. They are also attacking XM Radio over allowing customers to store music on there portable devices to listen too later. Yet at the same time this goes against them because they allow people who have an iPod do the same thing.

They enjoy favoritism, what they won't get from one person they will get from another, the most naive one will always be the first to go down. They are also asking for more royalties from public radio stations. They also practice Payola. Although they where caught doing this, there still doing it only through a third party though. A under the table agreement.

There is a lot more to what the RIAA is doing other than just to customers. They are screwing over the very people who made them the big business player's they are now. Kind of like a spoiled child hitting on his always supportive mother.

Artists and musicians should look for better alternatives like »magnatune.com or small indie labels that support common sense practices, just remember all indie labels are not clean though so choose wisely.

Thank you for magnatune site, which BTW looks as if it has a variety of musical tastes just waiting to be discovered, which breaks the RIAA's (all music must sound the same) formula of producing the same old cookie cutter stale mold of music.Where the music does not change, just the band members playing the same old no hit wonder filler music.

Not the MPAA/RIAA...

This website, with the address www.captaincopyright.ca is operated and owned by the The Canadian Copyright Licensing Agency, carrying on business as Access Copyright.
The MPAA and RIAA are American groups. It would be stupid to try and charge them for the actions of a Canadian agency.

Captain Copyright is a copyright infringer

Ah the irony of it all.

The content cartels pick a mascot to educate brainwash school children
with an industry favorable, one-sided copyright
argument, when they are doing the very things they
are ranting against.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the music
and film industries are a bunch of hypocrites.

media ownership

with the way things are going, eventually we won't be allowed to own any intellectual property. I tunes will stream it to your t.v. for a pay-per-watch fee. and then it will be gone untill you want to pay to watch it again. Buy up as much media as you can before this happens.

Re: media ownership

I've always wondered why so few are creating media. I haven't listened to much commercial music because I'm too busy making my own. Then, I can't complain at how much everything sucks because a.) I hold the copyright, and b.) I'm the creator, so it's what I like best.

If you don't like what's out there and don't want to get burned over this, then at least contribute back with what you think is better.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAH this comic is so ironic because this is usually how the type of people the RIAA represents (metaphorically) get ahead. Yes I know it is a Canadien organization, but I'm sure the RIAA has something like this in the works.
