1.5 Percent of Continent connected
(old news - 10:00AM Friday May 19 2006)
tags: stats · world
According to the Associated Press, Africans pay on average 90 times what Americans pay for data downloads. Americans pay on average $20 for one gigabyte of data per month, while Africans pay $1,800. "The only undersea fiber optic cable to connect several African countries and the rest of the world - remains the most expensive in the world and contributes to the high costs of bandwidth in Africa," notes a Kenyan official. Only about 1.5 percent of Africa's estimated 906 million people are connected to the Internet.

Pricey

600 terabytes were downloaded from the Xbox 360 Live network during E3. At this price it would cost $1,080,000,000!

Africa will never....

Africa will never see anything good or decent at those prices. It's a real pity the entire world, including most of the USA couldn't be wired like Japan cheaply, and reliably.

Re: Africa will never....

I think the reason that broadband is so cheap in Japan, Korea, etc. is that there are a lot of people crammed in a relatively small location.

On the other hand, the reason broadband in the US isn't cheaper is the greedy telecoms...

So it would cost $30 - $40 to go to an online store and order a product?

that is outrageous!

way too much for that volume of data. It would be cheaper to send a dvd/tape backup image of something. could they not "cache" large portions of information and then serve it closer to their intended destinations??? this would seem one of the only solutions. at those prices, they could probably solve starvation in many places. sorry, but food and water are more important than a gig of nearly any information, unless of course that gigabyte of info somehow contained the cure for AIDS.

2 Africas

I wonder how this breaks down between the politically "free-er" countries such as South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Kenya and Zambia and the rest of the continent.

Another point to consider... South Africa happens to be the country where Thawte, Inc. (the #2 security certificate vendor) is headquartered. Things can't be that bad!

Re: 2 Africas

There was an article not to long ago (I think it was here on BBR) and a user in South Africa calculated that for a 1GB file it was cheaper and faster (if he didn't stay overnight) to fly to Hong Kong, visit an internet cafe, download the file, burn it to DVD, and then fly home again.

Here are some of the residential prices from one South African DSL provider. I am assuming that like with US providers, the actual cost is probably higher due to hidden fees and such.

Installation Fee for all services w/ VAT: 404.40 South African Rand = $62.38.

Monthly Fee for 1Mbps service w/ VAT: 680.00 South African Rand = $105.

Monthly fee for 512kbps w/ VAT: 477.00 South African Rand = $73.65.

Monthly fee for 384kbps w/ VAT: 359.00 South African Rand = $55.43.

Monthly fee for 192kbps w/ VAT: 270.00 South African Rand = $41.69.

These are high prices even by USA standards, but there must be people in South Africa who can afford those prices or else they would not be charging them.

As for the DVD/flying to Hong Kong story, I did some calculations assuming I was using the 1Mbps service above. 1GB is 8000mbits. It would take a little over 2 hours to download 1GB. Unless it took more than 30 days to do the download, the costs (including installation) would be about $170.

According to Cathay Pacific's website, the cost of flying round trip from Johannesburg to Hong Kong is 13159 South African Rand, or about $2028.37. Of course, this assumes a trip leaving this Saturday and returning on Tuesday, but I think the premise of that original article is way off.

Basic needs

Most of africa doesn't have the basic needs of food, water, and shelter for its occupants, so why is $1,800/GB data costs an issue?

I think the main point of the article was that the African continent's connection to the rest of the internet world is lacking at best. The average numbers are likely off, considering the economic state and location of the bulk of Africa's population; however, one must consider some of the larger African cities, ports and areas of commerce (Nairobi, Mombasa, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Cairo, et. al) and how costly it is for those areas to get internet access.

I'd like to see a cost comparison to regions of similar land mass and population density.

Instead of just giving them food, many of the aid agency are now trying to teach them to be self sufficient.
One of the best ways to accomplish this is through education.

It would be to expensive to have a teacher come in form the outside, instead they have set up solar powered computer terminals in some of the most remote villages.
A child now has the ability to help themselves, there village, and there country without depending on others.

These outrageous bandwidth prices help to keep them dependent on others.

So?

How do our costs compare to South Korea's? (Or put another way, why aren't they comparing the worst costs to the best?)

Average price is a little off.

In America we pay for unlimited connections. I think sbc is around $15 a month for 3mbit. People download hundreds of gigabytes on such a connection.

Maybe when the genocide stops...

telecom corporations will be willing to set up shop and make it cheap. So long as warlord states continue to operate making it unsafe to deploy anything nothing will change.

Re: Maybe when the genocide stops...

Perhaps broadband in South Africa isn't $1800/GB. If they want to price African broadband in general, we must stick to generalities.

If we want to isolate the discussion to specific nations, we need to know what the prices are in those nations.

how they obtain the $1800?

i am wondering how they get this number, i am wondering they could get this number by saying most people are on 56K dialup, ideally if they want to download 1GB of data they need over 42 hours, and if their ISP charge those dialup connection say a combination of monthly fee + additional usage count by hour (say $30 - 40 per hour) then we can get the $1800.

Prices For Morocco:
Menara ADSL »www.menara.ma/abonne/adsl.asp
256kbit : 199 MAD = $22.96 US
512kbit : 299 MAD = $34.50 US
1Mbit : 399 MAD = $46 US
2mbit : 499 MAD = $57 US
4mbit: 799 MAD = $92 US

But Prices will eventually drop since Meditel and Maroc Connect will soon bring some competition to Menara IAM.

Those numbers are skewed. I use much much much much more than 1GB/month and I pay $45/month.

Maybe the reason they got no food or internet is that they are run by a bunch communist pinkos! I'm sure if they had broadband in zimbabwe, their two bit, piece of s*** commie dictator would have it all to himself and let everyone else die! Or the fact that South Africa was taken away from white capitalists and given over to black communists and now what was a nice country is a toilet! If they had internet they would find out all the lies those commies have said like to cure aids u got to rape white babies. They ought nuke africa, and end communism!
