Vendors debate whether draft gear shipping too early
(old news - 11:51AM Wednesday May 03 2006)
tags: wireless · hardware
We mentioned last week that many wireless experts are advising users to wait on buying first-draft 802.11n wireless routers, despite the sexy and sleek new designs coming out from Belkin, Linksys, and others. You can pick your reason to do so: the new routers have the potential to interfere with nearby 802.11g networks; it's not 100% certain they'll be firmware upgradable to the final spec; and you can expect the gear to drop in price significantly by the end of the year.

There's plenty more opinion out there this week, most of them lamenting Wi-Fi hardware industry hype: See PCWorld, and/or Electronic News. What's more, members of the IEEE 802.11 working group today failed to even gain a simple majority in moving the draft to the next level. Companies who have stated it's too early for draft gear to hit the market issued "I told you so" statements:
"According to Airgo Networks CEO Greg Raleigh: "Today's outcome proves that draft 1.0 was not as stable as some in the industry would have us believe. It calls into question the validity of so-called 'draft n' products. Airgo will continue to pursue its strategy of waiting until a more mature, stable draft is established before introducing products that comply."
The draft now heads back to the drawing board, and the group will mull the 2.0 version of an 802.11n draft standard for high data rate Wi-Fi.

Meh

Just new pretty toys.
If I want to transfer large files, I have ethernet. 22mbps from my "g" router is fine for now, if I want faster, I have several CAT5 cords lying around.

Re: Meh

What can businesses do when nearby homes or whatever deploys this draft gear and it interfers with the businesses' networks?

We don't have a problem here because we are not close enough to the neighboring businesses or houses, but what about aren't as fortuneate as us?

Given that it's unregulated spectrum, they will pretty much have to just cope with it.

Not Finalized yet?

Not that I really follow it but I thought the 802.11N standard had already been finalized. If not guess I better pay more attention. I had wondered why some of the articles were still calling these new routers Pre-N or first draft.

No, it has not been finalized, not even close. Yes, you better pay more attention.

It is case of engineering vs. marketing: think Dilbert.

Engineers want to tinker on the product but marketing rules the corporate world, the lords of chaos. Engineers say we need to work on the 802.11N but marketing say no it good enough get it out the door today; I promised customer we will have 1000 unit on his shelf by last week. We can patch thing up later.

It's "finalized" in the sense that there's a draft that was sent to letter ballot. It ain't perfect; there are bound to be errors in a document that big and complex. People vote "no" to ensure that their comments are considered by the group. This is SOP in the IEEE; the draft will go through a couple of iterations of balloting until the group agrees that all the non-negligible errors have been rung out.

But the press have magazines to sell and websites to promote (like this one), so they spin this like it's some big thing.

Paying for the 'bleeding edge'

You wanna first adopt, then get ready for the consequences. They don't call it the 'bleeding edge' for nuthin' y'know!

Anyone that buys this gear deserves what they get...so so performance and a nice looking paper weight by the end of the year.

oh my...

what's the problem... they've already ratified the .11n standard right...? so start developing till you drop... it's good for everyone who wants this type of equipment... otherwise why are these people in business...?

Re: oh my...

No, the draft standard was up for a vote to move it to next level and it didn't pass. Thats what the news thing above says, RTFA.
Hint: Check out the timeline on the 802.11g standard
At this point we are at today, it took 1 more year to get the final standard.

So, expect to wait a year from now to be able to buy 802.11n standardized stuff. Until then, you are playing russian roulette. Its highly unlikely that any pre-N stuff you buy will work completly with the final standard, and its even more unlikly that you will be able to upgrade it. So if you dont mind replacing equipment in a year, go ahead.

Re: 100M WIFI ?

802.11n is said to give at least 200-300 Mbit of true throughput. 108 Mbit gear is the same as 54 in that it really only gives 25-50% of the rated speed.

Re: 100M WIFI ?

The fact that almost all 802.11n stuff is shipping with a 10/100mbit ethernet interface rather than a gigabit means thats very unlikely

54g stuff topped out at around 35mbit of real throughput, even the super G stuff only hit about 45mbit. I would expect n stuff to hit 60 or 80 mbit if we are really lucky.
