25% think they are, but aren't
(old news - 09:24AM Thursday Dec 08 2005)
tags: Video · hardware · stats · Oddities
Apparently half of all HDTV owners don't actually use the HD capabilities of their set, and nearly a quarter think they're watching high definition video when they actually haven't set it up correctly. The survey comes from set-top box maker Scientific Atlanta, which notes that HDTV sets will be in approximately 16 million homes across the country by the end of the year. BBR editors want a 50" Plasma if Santa is listening.

Maybe if there was some HD content?

Right now 99% of comcast cable channels are SD.

I try to watch the HD channels when ever I can, but most of the time there is just nothing on.

90% of what i watch is in HD and a majority of that is from the big 4. Now if only FX went HD. Maybe the new Fox HD channel coming in 2006 will carry FX shows.

Sad but true....I've got my Sony XBR960 setup w/ a Cable Card and a STB via DVI and optical, all of which I had to setup myself, beacuae Comcast techs didn't understand why I'd possibly want to use DVI when their free component cable worked just fine! :( He said...ahh that DVI is just a way for companies to sell expensive cables!!! And even further...why I'd need a Cable Card when the STB worked fine. (ever hear of PIP guys!!)

Anyway...the HD picture is truly amazing to behold...it's fun to count the droplets of sweat on Julius Jones' face in the third quarter of the game on a hot day. It is truly a shame that so many folks are wasting their money on HD technology and not utilizing it fully!

More proof...I set up a Samsung HD LCD for my dear mother-in-law about a month ago. When I visited last week she was raving about the great picture....yep you guessed it...she had the STB set to the SD channel instead of the HD one. It's gonna take a while before John and Jane Q. Public will be up to speed on this technology.

Re: Maybe if there was some HD content?

I don't have HDTV, but I have a similar experience.

When I was living in an apt, I had Comcast. I ordered digital cable, and because of the multiple pieces in my setup, I actually taped the coax, S-Video, etc cables to the top of the stereo case where I wanted the box to go. I wasn't sure if I would be home, so I wanted to make sure it was done right (my wife is not up on this stuff).

I happened to be home when ge came since he was actually on time. The guy comes in, hooks up the cables I have based on where they fit. He then turns to me asks, "How does the picture get to the TV without another Coax cable?"

Statistics lie.

Hey for me, I will stick with my 45" RCA rear projection and watch non HD. Unfortunately, I would say that most people on the Gulf Coast and down in South Florida will be using their savings (like me) to fix the roof over their heads before they even think of watching any type of HD programming.

Has anyone ever read "How To Lie Using Statistics?" It really is a fascinating book.

some people easy to please, I guess

"The survey confirms the long-standing prejudice of many of us non-videophiles that HDTV really isn’t all that impressive."

Anyone that thinks that HD is not that impressive has not really seen HDTV. Maybe if the retailers were showing true HD on the floor samples (I don't know, maybe they are), when people got the sets home and it doesn't look like it did at the store, they would try to figure out why.

Unfortunately, the probably do what I have seen reports of some people doing: buy the HDTV cause it looks great in the store, then when they get it home and don't have the programming, they take the TV back because it doesn't look that good.

Gozilla

@shawcable.net

Re: some people easy to please, I guess

depends where you live.

In BC (Canada)while most channels advertise shows being aired in HDTV, it isn't actually broadcast LOCALLY in HD. A year ago people were told that they MUST have HDTV by 2005, but that came and went and SD still prevails.

Sure you can rent or buy an HDTV box and buy an HDTV, but in most cases even shows that SAY they are in HDTV simply aren't rebroadcast in HDTV here anyway.

Tech-2005

@pacbell.n

I have a 32" Sony Wega HD monitor and a Samsung over-the-air receiver box, and a Dish sattelite standard definition. The Sony TV does line doubling and some other things to clear up the already clear Dish signal. I use a Monster Video 3 S-Video cable and it is really sharp. I use component for the HDTV over the air picture which is better than the SDTV signal from the Dish receiver but it is not night and day different. I don't think that 720p or 1080i is good enough. I would recommend going with a 1080p or higher HDTV set such as the new Sony LCDs have as they up-convert the HDTV signal even higher. HDTV is good but the newer sets with the up-conversion are much much better.

My dad has a Sony 50" Plasma, and I was at his house last weekend and he was watching college football on ESPN -- regular SD ESPN.. They showed a replay and the "ESPN HD" logo flashed across the screen... so I turned to channel 202, and sure enough... the game was on in Hi-Def on ESPN-HD. He was probably remarking to himself how great the SD picture was .

Happy with my set, want more HD

I just got a new 50" last month and love it. I have DirecTV and their HD package. However, I found out that even though they have the major networks national broadcasts available, they don't activate them if you have locally owned affiliates (I guess that's the right way to say it). The way it's setup with whatever restrictions they have I have to get an antenna or have DirecTV request a waiver on my behalf to the local stations to allow me to receive DirecTV's broadcast of the national channels vs. the local ones.

I used to see commercials about DirecTV launching satellites made for HD but haven't heard any more about it now that I have an HD set... anybody have any details?

In summary, my TV kicks much ass. After watching the few HD channels I have, SD sucks .

The satellite was launched about a month ago, uses MPEG4 Technology. Hopefully you did not spring for the HD DVR because it will need to be replaced to use the new bird.

Rumor has it the top 16 markets will go online soon, the bird has a capability to do 1500 HD channels. Most D* customers will need a new receiver and dish to use it

Personally I think OTA HD is the bomb, just sucks I can't Tivo it! (YET!)

Cox HD looks nothing like the OTA signal I can get anyway.

I still haven't taken the HD plunge, but I do have DirecTV. If I were to upgrade now, I'd assume it would support this new capability, yes?

I'd hope so. I wouldn't to upgrade to something that is obsolete.

I'm sorry I don't remember the model numbers, I do know the current DVR models will NOT work.

There is a HDTV Tuner, I think it has 82 in the model number that is MPEG4 compatible, I think it's the one they are selling now.

I am buying a HDTV Tivo this weekend regardless, they say even if you buy the older model they will upgrade it for you when the time comes.

The current Tivo records HDTV OTA, and that's 90% of what I want anyway.

Re: Happy with my set, want more HD

This is all discussed in GREAT detail at tivocommunity.com and look for the HD Tivo and DirecTV forums. You both have a decent amount of the information correct, but there are some other points that you may want to check out - including a better way to get the HD Tivo for a better than retail price, but you have to look in the HD forum over there (I don't have time to post a link right now).

Honestly, DTV will replace your HD equipment once your local market goes live on the Mpeg-4 standard (depending on your market), so don't worry.

I live in Tucson, and DTV still has more HD channels available than Cox or Comcast - and DTV doesn't even have the locals in HD yet (we are about the 115th market to get them and they haven't even lit up the first six... )

Either way, hang in there, it's on the way.

You would be given the option to get a MPEG-4 receiver. Detroit is currently testing MPEG-4. If you want a HD-DVR then you'll be stuck with an MPEG-2 DVR until they decide to release it.

Detroit and Atlanta HD locals are up and running now.

Those of us with HD DVRs (which do both DirecTV and OTA) don't have to worry about swapping equipment for the foreseeable future IF we don't want HD locals. I don't want or need HD locals since I get all locals just fine OTA with an antenna in my attic...

Actually it was top 12. Detroit is the test market & here in
Atlanta there are a few peeps that have it as well. The hold up is the new (psuedo) 5 LNB dish, model # AT-9. They are in extremely short supply.

As far as getting MPEG-4 channels, you will need a new box, however it is expected that the old MPEG-2 transmissions will continue for several years. Head on over to AVS for more info, arcane trivial arguments, & just nitpickery in general than you can shake several sticks at

Yeah I upgraded my standard DTV DVR with the 250GB HDD one (don't remember the model) from Best Buy when I got the TV. If I have to upgrade, no biggie. At least I got the unit at $599 vs $999. And if I ever fill out the rebate I'll get $100 back. Anyway, my issue is getting more HD channels. So its good to hear the satellite is up there and ready to go and that new DVRs for it are around the corner. I'm exited about the better MPEG4 (vs 2 or whatever) as well. Will be nice to get even more quality out of it.

Thanks for all the info everybody!

funny

The bar I frequent has a big sign out front "Watch Football on our High Def TV". The owner has a SD DirectTV box with coax running to the TV. I keep telling him it's not HD, but he doesn't believe me. Most of the people watching love it though. They all crowd around the big TV watching the short, fat, stretched out football players.

Haha! I've seen the same thing at the bar of a restaurant I go to. They have 2 Panasonic plasmas behind the bar with some nice stretch SD signal. I hear the "wow look at that HDTV!" comment many times. I gave up long ago trying to explain it all to everyone.

HD works for me

When you see the snowflakes falling on a field of grass where you can see individual blades, you know you are seeing something different. When the delivery guy steps in while you are watching an HD channel and becomes transfixed you know it is something different. When you watch a DVD and say, "Damn that is just not clear as it should be" you know what capabilities you have.

I love watching HDTV, sure the DVR set top costs a bit more but it is worth it to me. I just wish my cable company would update the firmware in the box and give me archive capabilities and I would really be happy. For my part, next I need to beef up the cheap Home Theater system I thought would be adequate.

HD lacking programming

That sounds about right. I just wish DirecTV would get off their butt and get some more channels in HD. Hell I get more channels over air than I get from them. Once people learn how to set up HD then there will be a rush on outside antennas. I agree that right now that the available HD programming is pretty dismal.

Watch out for the "pro" installers

Adelphia came out and installed their HD DVR while I was out of town. Even though I set out a couple of component cables for my HD LCD set, they still hooked up all inputs and outputs with standard composite video and told my wife all that other stuff "wasn't necessary" and she believed them, and put the "extra" cables away. She believed that she was watching high-def until I came home and knew something was wrong because the set was still set to the AV input. Oddly enough, the high-def channels *looked* better and cleaner, which might fool some people who are not used to HD into thinking they are watching HD.

I suspect a lot of people defer to "professional installation" of their HD set or gear and don't know if they do a proper job or not. Chances are, they either don't know the equipment well enough, are too lazy, or under pressure to finish and get to the next appointment to futz with and troubleshoot HDMI or component cable issues and proper setup on the set itself.

Agree

Just the other day I went over to a friend of a friend's house and noticed his 51" set. He was watching a DVD and I noticed something didn't look right. Sure enough... he still had his modulator and was watching the DVD on channel 3!

His mouth dropped after grabbing the component cables out of the DVD player box and showing him what a progressive scan DVD looked like. And this was only 480p that I showed him! I told him to come stop by and see some 1080i or 720p material.
