Broadband Over Gas Lines
One company, one stat farm, lots of sound & fury

The company behind Broadband in Gas (BIG) technology, Nethercom, is again throwing out some gaudy prediction numbers for their ultra-wideband wireless broadband service - which they say can deliver 40-100Mbps through your gas pipes to your PC. What's more, the company claims they can deliver this speed for roughly the same price as a DSL install, or a tenth the install price of a fiber line.

In September Nethercom cuddled up to a research report from "West Technology Research Solutions", which claimed that BIG service "may soon be provided to" 70% of the US population. Of course that's the number of potential customers served by gas lines, not any solid prediction of technology deployment.

The study did predict that BIG "stands to add nearly 20 million subscribers to the overall market by 2010, as compared to an overall subscriber forecast of 455 million subscribers globally." The biggest perk, they claim, being that gas-pipes "exhibit very low noise floors, and are generally devoid of outside signal interference".

The same study resurfaced again today in press release form, this time featuring the claim that broadband in gas will account for nearly 25% of all Ultra-wideband chip sales by 2010.

Nethercom gathered 40+ utilities in San Diego to sell them on the technology last September. If any one of those companies were seriously pursuing the technology, we imagine Nethercom would have informed the public.

Someone had better get busy if the lofty numbers being thrown around are to be considered remotely plausible. Otherwise, a person could start thinking WTRS and Nethercom are simply financially tied partners mutually working the crank of a gigantic hype-machine.

Question...

How do they do this? Do they actually pass a signal over the gas pipes?

If it can conduct, it can pass a signal.

Gas lines installed within the past 20 years to homes are plastic.

The gas lines act as a waveguide.

I just had gas lines run to my home earlier this year, and they installed lovely yellow vinyl-clad stainless steel flexible pipe. I believe this could serve quite well as a waveguide.

Good news .... we use that pipe at work, and it ain't rated to be buried, not even on the house side of the regulator. Hope you don't get a leak !!!

That is quite interesting considering that my gas lines currently being ran are green vinyl clad iron. I guess my gas company is 20 yrs behind the times.

Plastic Pipes

All Gas Lines are made out of a type of metal...plastic..who thought of this..."working out in the yard someday...you say to yourself i am going to dig here, next thing you notice is that you just split that plasic pipe in half that runs the highly flammable gas"...plastic pipes...i dont think so

Not true, 5psi gas pipes are plastic. Many places use this and that is it is a 1/2 inch line moron.

Thats why you need to " call before you dig". Also any type of medium for carrying/ transporting natural gas is tested 1.5 times MAOP ( Max Allowable Working Pressure) Now delivery to your house is a bit different, as I'm not sure about the laws where you live. I was referring to the transmission laws ( gas transmission is regulated, ironically, by the DOT.
Where i work, we use some plastic pipe, as well as iron pipe, both are being installed in the US today with iron pipe leading. Plastic pipe obviously doesn't need to be protected against corrosion. It is buried ( as one poster stated above) with a " trace wire" for ease of locating.

Iron pipe normally comes ready to be welded together with the coating already on, its called fusion bond.

My question is this: Where i work, we regularly run " pigs" through the pipe. The pigs sweep the system for liquids and hydrates ( ice), and need to conform to the inside of the pipe as close as possible. How will pigging be possible with fiber in the line, or are the companies going to run the fiber in the part of the line that is not piggable?

I just built a brand new home. My gas pipes are iron. My water pipes are copper. The only plastic (PVC) is the drain pipes.

Invisible gas, vaporware broadband?

BPL
Blimp band
Bo Gas Lines
Wi-max
How many more possible Vaporware broadband technology's can we need?
Sure even if this works it should be a lot cheaper to deploy than something more traditional such as fiber.. but i would stick with what works such as fiber..
I don't think 70% of the population is served by gas, which is why the only one of those I'd like to see deployed is the Blimp band, then even the most rural customers get served (if it lives up to what they claim that is)

Soon the pizza guy will be delivering broadband.

How about these ideas:

Broadband over grass.
Broadband over asphalt.
Broadband over water.
Broadband over trees.

Come on people, think outside the box!

Give me fiber!

Damn these companies looking for the cheap way out. Give me fiber...since fiber is being constantly improved and is already proven to work and will end up the end result then swallow the cost and put it in now. They would easily make up the costs of the install within the first fiscal year.

Actually water is fairly non-conductive (10-18 MegOhms/centimeter). It is the impurities in water that make it a good conductor and are the reason why you do not mix electricity and water.

Stuff like this and BPL could really take off in Alaska, where I am. But the small companies up here that serve us gas and power won't dish out the change to supply us with these new features.

Broadband Over Gas Lines

Guys and Gals, I like all the comments made about sparks and fires but the fact is they push fiber thru the pipes. Makes no difference if it metal or plastic. No sparks just light signals sending bits and bites.

Wow

I thought more people were in support of new forms of broadband. This is actually feasible and it wont blow up your house. I'm am getting a little tired of people saying "give me fiber or nothing" when the fact is most of you don't really require a 30mbs pipe. And I did say most, but flame me anyway.

No but if you cook enough gas producing foods, the people in your household will produce excess gas which can be sold back to the gas company.
