Nokia: Our Bad, Cellular Networks Suck
And Wimax is 'pretty bad hype'
"Cellular networks haven't taken off [for data] because cellular networks currently suck. Badly. It's our fault - we've done it badly," states Nokia's Markku Hollström to Silicon.com. Hollström insists that while Wimax wireless broadband will have its niche, "WiMax is hype at the moment - and it's pretty bad hype."

Hype?!!! There is more hype talking about the hype! For every article talking about Wimax there is another article talking about the "hype". What people are experiencing is called successful marketing as well as predictions on Wimax's potential for success. Opinions vary widely as with any unknown. Positive opinions are carried farther due to the marketing. Maybe you can call that hype but if I read another article on Wimax's "hype" I'm going to puke

why would you say you like this guy considering his company has promoted the cellular suckage for so long...? the fact that he's admitting that cellular suckage is due to nokia's bad implementation of the cellular standard as another way to send high bandwidth data should signal to you that you and hundreds of millions of others that use the same cellular network have been sold a bill of goods...

and you like this guy because he's stated the obvious and has stuck it to all of us without a reach around or a kiss...? battered wife syndrome much...?

I agree.

Anyone taking bets on how long this guy has a job?

I applaud his veracity, but this isn't exactly the thing that gives shareholders that warm and fuzzy feeling.

Can you hear me now ??

It's always struck me as odd that people in general put up with the poor quality of cell phone calls. It's getting better, but there are always times when calls won't go through, the call just dies for no apparent reason, words get lost, or you just can't hear anything.

Why do we put up with this? If any of these things occured on my wireline phone at home, I would be complaining to have the problem fixed as soon as I could find a phone that worked. Are we just lulled into complacency by the magic of it all?

Until they can improve and stabilize the quality, data over cell networks will go nowhere fast.

Same reason I haven't bought a cell yet.

I would easily pay $150/month if reliability and quality was as good as landline

I pay $15 a month for a VoIP line that's more reliable than both my cellphones. Land line's aren't the only sold alternative out there.

Maybe it would help if you could switch providers more easily.
Since phones are designed to work for a particular network once you have the phone you are stuck. Yes you can get a phone for nothing but usually those phones are not exactly feature rich. I bought a phone while living in the US and now that I am in Canada I am stuck on one network. I would love to switch since the other provider provides better coverage in the areas that I travel but it means either buying a new phone or signing up to a long term contract to get a feature rich phone. I don't like contracts so I am stuck.
Don't you think there would be incentive to fix the service if you could easily switch providers while keeping your phone and number?

Try googling for your model of cell phone unlocking. Once your phone is unlocked you can use any network. If you've had your phone for a year the company you go through might just give you the unlock codes.

That doesn't always work since unlike in other parts of the world such as Europe, in the US and Canada not all carriers use the same technology -- some are GSM, some are CDMA, a few are iDEN, and a few still use only old IS-136 TDMA and AMPS. Worse, CDMA carriers, citing specious arguments relating to E911 requirements and data support, typically refuse to activate phones not sold for "their" network even if unlocked; you can't take a Verizon or Alltel phone (aside from some phones sold for prepaid, neither does anything to lock phones to their network) to Sprint since Sprint won't activate it.

In the US, unlocking is only useful to switch between Cingular and T-Mobile (and some smaller regionals such as CellOne/Dobson) or for international roaming purposes, while in Canada, it's ONLY useful for intl. roaming since there is now only one GSM carrier in Canada -- Rogers.

Unfortunately Motorola phones seem to be a problem with the unlocking people specifically my T720.
But my point is still that they really shouldn't be locked to begin with.

Nokia Exec Is Blowing Smoke

Come on everyone. Do you really think this exec would talk like this if he didn't have his own agenda. Nokia is involved in a standards war with Intel and other WiFi supporters. Nokia is dumping on WiFi because they don't want it to be a threat to their 3G technology.

Get real. This is completely self-interest spin.

Well maybe not. But it's STILL fun. Next I'd like to see the word "suck" in their press release.

Re: Nokia Exec Is Blowing Smoke

wow somebody admitting it. If I had a 5 dollar bill for every crappy cell phone call I have received in the last couple of years I would have been able to retire, and it is getting worse. It's a good thing I am a Hamradio operator I a good at picking voices out of crap. People get mad when I tell them to reconnect, that they have a have a bad cell path. What do they expect when they have a phone with the transmitter power of a spider fart.

Besides, a Nokia cell phone is the only cell phone I ever owned that was a piece of crap. They replaced it and the replacement was junk too. It kept powering down at odd times even with battery fully charged.

RE: ~

The networks are not the problem. It's just that mobile bandwidth is insanely expensive. It would would cost me 15€ per MB. Nobody is that stupid.

Sounds just like their Monitor Line

RANT/

Nokia made beautiful looking, but very crappy quality monitors. Even the Nokia refurbs failed at 9 months like the new ones do. I suffered through 5 of them in under 4 years and then they decided that my Nokia Warranty would not be honored by them anymore. That's great! Not! They instead wanted to sell me a "9 month term life" refurb - what a joke. The same repair parts failed over and over each time so they want to sell to me (after I had already paid Retail for a New Nokia) what they could NOT fix the first 5 times beforehand? Right. I don't think so.

So guess what Nokia does when they finally figure out they just don't have the "where-with-all" to make a monitor that actually works for more than 9 months before needing the entire mainboard replaced after all the SMT chips get blown off the board? They just decide to stop making monitors and leave every Nokia Monitor customer in the lurch. Good Luck, see ya!

Nokia might as well leave the Cell Market *now* too and find something that they can actually handle. Maybe something less technical? Don't farmers need helpers? They could make axe and shovel handles out of wood, right?

Did ANYONE Read The Article?

Come on you guys. The quoted article has nothing to do with voice cell phone services. The Nokia exec is speaking specifically about DATA running on cellular networks.

I guess whoever wrote the headline for BBR did a poor job of explaining what this article was about.
