Location Free comes to gaming handheld
(old news - 11:08AM Thursday Oct 13 2005)
tags: Video · hardware · gaming
Sony has released version 2.5 firmware for the PSP. Aside from the usual efforts to lock down modders and custom content, the big addition is the Location Free Player, which lets you watch your television from anywhere via Wi-Fi and your PSP. Of course you'd need to spend $300+ for the Location Free base station, whose closest competitor is the previously discussed Slingbox. Is it just us, or will ISPs have to really start upping upstream bandwidth soon?

so, is there software you can download/buy for your computer to use your TV card's capability with Location Free?

Re: tv card

another added addition to a very nice product.

what you need is the hardware, its like a little box that connects up to you cable line and pc.. from there you can stream your content to the any location free enabled device (802.11b min)

however, i am still not upgrading.. homebrew outweighs this for me at the moment.

I wonder that as well. One of my PCs at home is a Media PC with Windows XP Media Center Edtion with the record shows (like Tivo) and all that good stuff built it and I have a wireless router so is there anything out there to get those working to eliminate the $300 device?

clarify

here's what i mean

instead of buying their hardware and going:
Cable
Location Free Device
Video Stream

just download/buy some software that does the job:
Cable
TV Card (PC)
Location Free Compatible Software
Video Stream

but i doubt this exists yet...

My guess would be no, since Sony engages in proprietary mania, but I'm still reading up on the device....

Bad enough Apple Corp. does this, now Sony with 300 box haha, way to expensive, for such a little extra, maybe when I can view TV on the Metro will I think of something like this.

It's almost there. I have WME 9 and broadcasts my cable feed to my LAN clients. I also have shared video with friends over the internet using WME. The only bad thing is that there's no channel changing control on the client side. And that the video server can not be started remotely with software. I have tried VLC and several others and none seemed to have worked. I hope there's better software that will do the trick, I'm not ready to be spending 300 bucks to watch TV across the world.

Yeah you can do this with VLC except that you don't have channel control from the client (without having to use a remote control app anyway). Also there seems to be a bug that limits the combined audio/video bandwidth to just 400 kb/s. Not really a problem on WAN, but it took me forever to figure out why I could not get video files or my TV tuner stream to work over my LAN, where I didn't think that I would need codecs or compression and was just streaming it raw.

EDIT: BTW, this is for computers, I don't know about the PSP.

Bitter Irony?

I'm considering giving out Sony PSP or the Slingbox as Holiday gifts to my clients.

The irony is that I just ordered my Slingbox yesterday to test it out!

Should I be considering the Sony platform for time-shifting instead so that it can be more about both gaming and TV anywhere?

ug!

Re: Bitter Irony?

If it works as good/better as Slingbox, I'd say yeah. Base-station would allow you to play on PSP or laptop, whereas Slingbox would restrict you to laptop....

Re: Bitter Irony?

I was also wondering (before the Sony announcement) if a Slingbox would ever let you play your XBOX or PS/2 remotely on your PC...that'd be cool.

More interested in home-brewn and emulators.

Television is something that turns me into a zombie. You sit there looking like a complete fool staring at an inanimate object.

This does not jive, or even remotely corrolate, with the general point or goal of a portable *GAMING* system.

I'm more interested in seeing NES, SNES, Genesis, and PCE/TG16 emulators come out for the PSP. There are a few NES emulators, but all require firmware 1.0 (which USA folk cannot use -- sigh...). There's one working SNES emulator, which is quite slow (SNES9x ported, and runs about ~25% too slow). Haven't tried Genesis or PCE/TG16 stuff yet.

Now that there's a working 1.5 downgrade method available (reason NOT to upgrade to 2.0, 2.1, or 2.5! Don't do it!), I'm a lot more happier with my purchase...

What Koitsu said. Not going to be upgrading my PSP. FYI, you don't need firmware 1.0 to run any homebrew, just about everything works just fine with version 1.5 and the exploit tool. The NES emulator NesterJ works very well.

The times I want to use a PSP are primarily when I'm not around a WiFi network anyway. This TV anywhere idea is interesting but not practical for me.

SONY Explanation?

Where does SONY explain what "location-free TV" is?

I don't see the effective pitch that the slingmedia.com site has to tell you what it is and how it works and why you gotta have it?

Anyone got a link?

Tv anywhere Vs IPOD Video

What do you guys think? Will it be a be a One sided match where IPOD wins like it is in the Music IPOD or
Sony will be market leader in portable video players ?

Re: Tv anywhere Vs IPOD Video

Why do people need this? Do we really have to have TV everywhere we go? And now they expect ISP's to upgrade upstream bandwidth just so that some dork can watch his 2" TV screen everywhere he goes? Aren't there much more important priorities in the world than this?

iPod "tv" screen? Anyways, the PSP screen is a lot larger than the 5th gen iPod that has video support. And 16:9, too.

A Poor Mans Version Of LocationFree

NO....It does NOT stream anything, so if you want streaming Video and/or TV cough up the $349.00 U.S. Sony wants but this is a QUICK and simple http server that DOES work with the PSP and allows you to store Offline Portals and any other files for the PSP on one of your PC's Hard Drives on your Network.

And It's FREE!
