In fact back, when Voom was a DBS provider too, I had around 40 HD channels and my full package with everything was $100 only. I really miss those Spring times...

| I know one thing for sure, someone at Verizon sure doesn't know how to cluster channels in any order that makes sense. HBO in teh 800s and Show int he 400s? Channels are sure scattered.
I am predicting that there will be grumbling from FiOS Tv viewers as just when they get used to this funky line up, someone finally groups them better. This is usually the process of most new cable companies.

All the Verizon box is, is a slightly changed 6412
Only other thing that would make sense for it to hold that little is if the digital tv is even higher bitrate then you would normally see, or if he is recording only HD content which of course takes up much more space

1 edit | The techs (all of them) told me I could run whatever I want. No ports blocked. The only downside: no static IP available for residential service in my area.
We just upgraded to business 15Mb/2Mb with 5 IP's and a much better SLA, which is $99/mo (up from $45/mo residential) plus a $300 AdTran router. The install is on the 25th. Very much looking forward.
I deployed a JMPP (Jive Messenger) server for the house today, will be able to provide encrypted chat to all my Mac users, worldwide (they travel a lot), including audio chat, with no extra configuration.

1 edit | I miss my dish network DVR, I had a 510, just recently switched over to cable because Dish Network is out of their mind expecting an existing customer to shell out $600 + dollars for a HD PVR. Now I have a Moto 6400, nowhere near the ease of use like the dish network reciever. No 30sec skip ahead button, the highest fast forward on the moto 6400 is 1/4 the speed of the dish network DVR. And don't even get me started on the remote, it is the same as the one in the picture for the verizon unit, too small and the buttons are not laid out correctly. I do like moto's series record feature though...

| Sounds a bit 'too enthusiastic'... ...especially when I read such idiotic FUD like this:
I4U: Anything that reminds you that it is not cable or satellite? Craig: I know that it is not satellite because it rained over the weekend and we all know what happens then.
Yes, we all know, Craig. Nothing happens then.
This 'rainy' and 'snowy' scaremongering is the good-ol' cable FUD - it's very interesting this guy suddenly soughs up the same marketing cvrap we hear from both sides all the time ("it's raining so you're screwed!" "even if it's average digital package, you're payi9ng twice as much on cable!" etc.)
I don't know... FiOS sounds awesome but this "user interview" smells fishy to me.

| Ok... This might be off topic, but I just want to ask...
Why is it that cable companies are faulted on trying to get people to switch to the same thing that by default FIOS TV and Satellite provide?
I'm talking about a digital box. (Yes, I know that Satellite really can't work any other way. )
Whenever talk comes up about a cable company trying to switch its customers to all digital to free up analog, people go nuts and say they can't force, blah, blah, blah.
Yet, people praise FIOS for having 20 HDTV channels and possibly a lower compression ratio on channels. Well, yeah, they don't have to deal with the analog spectrum, they can use all of the RF spectrum for digital channels.
How come no one complains that FIOS isn't pumping some analog over their coax so that people with analog cable can switch to them?
If cable tried to do this, people would be in an uproar.
"Oh god no! I don't want a set top box!!"
Yeah, the cable companies charge a lot of money, this is indeed a problem I don't overlook. And perhaps FIOS TV will force them to compete better. And in a way, it can be "unfair" (I use that word lightly) to the cable companies, since they're pretty much forced to keep offering analog.
But there does seem to be a double standard when it comes to this. FIOS gets praise for its all digital TV, cable gets blasted when it comes up that they want to switch everyone to digital.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm just trying to understand.

Because analog is dead and it's time to move on. That's why having competition is good... if people are so hell bent on sticking with analog, crappy channels... then they can stay with the local cable company. If they want channels that look good... they switch.
You're comparing two totally seperate things. Verizon is going to be the secondary provider in communities... not a single provider. The reason people bitch about cable going all digital is because it will force people to upgrade and pay more since there is no other choice... FIOS will provide that choice. -- [BetaNews | phpBB |MSN TerraServer |Space Imaging]

But thanks for the info, I did not realize that FIOS TV had an analog tier.

Why should the older company be held to any different standards just because there is someone new?
It's just like I said, there is a double standard.
It's not like Verizon is a great company for consumers or anything either.

1 edit | RE: Channel Lineup To the user who was talking about the channel lineup problem.
If you actually look at the fios tv lineup, the movie channel lineups start at 340 and go until about 430. In that, they have Starz!, Encore, Showtime, The Movie Channel, Flix, Inde channel, HBO, and Cinemax, all back to back. The 800 channel he was talking about was actually 830-834, which is HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, The Movie Channel, and Starz! in High Def. VZ has grouped all the high def channels together from 801-834 (inluding, local, sports, and movie channels). I can't wait for this to come to my part of TX.
