66% territory availability by November 5?
(old news - 10:14AM Saturday Oct 08 2005)
tags: dsl · coverage
The rumored date for BellSouth's new 6Mbps Xtreme (sigh) DSL tier, October 7, has clearly come and gone. Fresh rumblings out of our forums indicate Katrina repair had temporarily sidetracked the deployment, and that customers should start seeing 6Mbps deployment in early November - if not sooner. One user claims he was at a meeting with BellSouth's Senior Director of Broadband Services, who stated the 6Mbps should be available to 66% of BellSouth customers (assuming they're within distance) by November 5.

November? Really?...

LOL, Who are they kidding? I can't even get the full 1.5mbps on my current plan. It's going to take some new lines in my area before it gets any faster.

That is a big problem with DSL. They announce all these high speeds for their service, but a very large % of their customers can't reach even 1.5 mbps because of old poor wiring and because of distance from CO or DSLAM. Until the telcos(Verizon FIOS excepted) start upgrading their wire to the homes, this situation will remain. DSL - great promise, bad results.

Waiting on DSL

That's correct WAITING. I had DSL and spent more time waiting than surfing. My Comcast connection works much better than any DSL I've seen. Can't say much about the computer support from Comcast because I never need it. DSL - Digitally Slow Line.

Re: Waiting on DSL

Not really excited about it I moved to a new apartment last year I could no longer get the extreme service which was 4megs down. They told me I was to far from the co and all I could get was basic dsl anyway we switched to charter and got there 3meg package so far so good. Charter is supposed to be rolling out a 5 meg package soon I'll be seriously taking a look at it when they do. By the way I'm located in Hoover alabama.

For you maybe. In my area, 3mbps DSL is faster and more reliable than 4mbps cable.

Rumors as news?

Great, another one. Must be a slow news day at DSLR. Hey, I heard BellSouth is going to give away a free pony to each 6meg customer, why isn't that mentioned in the headline too???

Which will never happen, because if you terminate early, the pony goes to the glue factory.

I swear, some people around here act more like stock holders than they do the consumer. News is news... it's just news... nothing matters, to a consumer, until the product is released and advertised. It's not liek your life revolves around every word of an exec or company statement...

I wonder...

I recieved a letter from Bellsouth the other day saying that I now qualified for the new Xtreme tier. It didnt specify any speeds though, so I am wondering if it is the old 3mbps tier. The whole reason I switched to Comcast was so I could get that 768kbps upload speed. Anyone have any idea what the upload for BS's 6mbps tier is supposed to be? I really miss my DSL and would like to switch back, this 6mbps that is actually 3mbps on average from Comcast is crap.

Xtreme 6.0

I've been calling once a day just to see what kind of answers I will get to the question of when Xtreme 6.0 will be available. It's also fun to see if you get someone on the phone from the US, India, or the Philippines, but anyway... Yesterday I got the most specific answer yet. She said "early November", but that I was welcome to call back and check again before that time.... India, in case you were wondering.

Well its a cop-out bell mouth of the south

Well, if you take out the 400 SQUARE MILES affected by the hurricanes, yeah... around 60% of the lines are served...
But is that any way to prop up statistics.. like saying the unemployment rate bumped up, but don't worry, the economy overall is doing great!

Hmm.. that's conservative math at work.

Does not sound attractive....

Especially when you are like me where you live over 12,000 from the nearest CO. Until FIOS come around, I guess I am "stuck" with Comcast's 6MB/384k. Pity me.

Their target is stable HDTV on demand, which requires
about 12 Meg service. Their target is also alot nearer
than 50 years... DS1/DS3/OC3 distribution is being phased
out and replaced by OC192/gigabit ethernet to bring the higher speeds closer to the end user- which makes the last mile less of a performace consideration.

Re: megs megs megs

12 meg per set maybe. No way your going to get a decent HD signal to 3-4 HD sets in a home on 12 meg and therin lies the problem with Bellsouth's plan.

From what I've seen discussed. The 2007 rollout will allow for up to 24mbs of service. Where can you fit multiple HD service and a data offering that will compete with cable offerings. Of course that's without massive HD compression which is just sinful.

It's been pointed out to me that Bellsouth doesn't compete with Verizon because their in different markets. Well, as a consumer, it doesn't do much for Bellsouth's 'high quality image' (some posters here who work for Bellsouth have this misguided feeling that Bellsouth has this image that's better than Comcast's or other companies) to know that my local phone company stinks compared to other area's local service. Especially if I'm forced into using their service even though in comparison I'm getting far less for my dollar that other areas because they are the only game in town.

No fifty years is pretty much dead on. It's taken them a decade to roll out DSL to the point they have it now. And they still have areas without DSL availability and spotty coverage in those areas that do.

If this goes well, sbc will probably make a comeback in 2007 that is if they are bothered by users switching to bs.
