New Open Source Browser: Flock
Firefox with teeth and fewer extension induced bugs?
(old news - 11:56AM Wednesday Sep 14 2005)
tags: software
Wired profiles Flock, a new open source browser that's been generating a lot of heat and noise among bloggers, despite beta being still a month away. A number of the browser's creators come from the Mozilla foundation, with the goal of creating a much beefier browser that's in line with the rather inane "Web 2.0" meme: software that better interconnects multiple services and individuals.

Another Firefox spin-off...

Taken from Chris Messina's "blog":

After doing a little investigating, it turns out Firefox 1.5 already supports pretty much what I'm looking for. And given that Flock is based on Firefox, that means we get to use it! How's that for serendipity?

Their website seems unprofessional, looks like a 15 year old designed it.

Re: Another Firefox spin-off...

Hey everyone, I'm making this brand new browser.

It's called "herd".

It's exactly the same as firefox, but it looks cooler and it has a different name.

Oh, only my friends can download. Sorry. You lose. But, it's so cool. Tell everyone about it and have BBR post a story to boost the hype even more.

Not a bad idea, a new browser based on Firefox. But posting to BBR to boost the hype even more .

Wow:

That is an incredibly ugly site.

Edit: So apparently this browser is getting tons of blogger buzz because... it has good blogging features? Er, okay....

I for one always wanted browsers to be read-only utilities, if only for the safety that confers upon the users.

It seems the purpose of Flock is to turn the web into a Wiki. Er, okay... Perhaps I'll understand after I see it.

Sorry, I'm just not cool enough

I would be afraid their site is indicative of their browsers performance. How would you like to have everything rendered like that?

This reminds me of Duke Nukem Forever: 100% hype, 0% product, supposedly based on somebody else's software engine. Wow-wee.

why?

Why BBR even post an article about a such stupid teen-marketing browser?

Re: why?

It seems to me that the Firefox programmers time would be better served by fixing the remaining holes in their browsers and produce some extensions that would are sorely needed if Mozilla is to truly compete on the market. We certainly don't need some second rate browser for children.

Thats what FireFox is now I thought? At least from the pompous side of users, you have what you don't want all ready.

Sorry

I would rather have MoFo fix holes and leave extensions to the 3rd. Party Extension Developers.

Back to the future?

An open source feature rich browser by the creators of Mozilla... hmmm...

It was called Mozilla Suite and for some totally unknown reason was ditched for Firefox, which is at best controversial, at worst it sux.

Now under codename SeaMonkey for many months, we have yet to see it catching up with RSS, Extension Manager, updated email and news client, better skins, etc.

I'm sorry but the normal user can only switch browsers so often. I made my switch from IE6 to Mozilla Suite three years ago and I have yet to see a compelling reason to switch again.

Re: Back to the future?

You can always switch to stipe/BlueFyre/moox/other optimized build

It may even be worth switching to another build to fix the bug that they refuse to fix.

Re: Back to the future?

It isn't really a bug in my opinion, just a missing feature at best. I wouldn't use it nearly enough to justify its inclusion in the right-click menu. I could see it being made an option, however, that could be changed in the preferences. A printing extension that expanded printing functionality would be another good place for it.

Careless

I don't give a F$@K about flock. They are simply changed the name of firefox. I think you need to do more then that to call yourself a developer. They has to make some changes. Or it is simple just theft of a program some other people designed.

Have you also notice they miss spelled send on flocks website they typed seed.

for the inevitable annoying ad banner masquerading as a cool graphic button:

"Get Flocked"

and

Security?

If its based on firefox and has less people working on it, doesn't that mean its security will be worse than firefox?

What engine?

Gecko? Presto? Trident? What engine does this browser use?

Re: What engine?

From the blog mentioned in the first post they said it can take advantage of Firefox 1.5's new features, so it's using Gecko.

big time ugly

Man! I'm not one to criticize how a web site is built or anything usually, but for someone advertising a product and writing their own source code for a browser, their webmastering skills leave alot to be desired.
