Will New Orleans Broadband Ultimately be Better?
BellSouth could replace damaged copper with fiber
One of the first reader responses when we mentioned the extent of BellSouth's network damage from Katrina was: "Maybe while they're re-wiring, they'll take the opportunity to upgrade." He wasn't alone; journalists ask the company (USA Today) if they'll take the opportunity to run fresh fiber. "It's hard under the circumstances to see this disaster in that light," says BellSouth's CTO Bill Smith. "But if you were bound and determined to find a silver lining to this catastrophe, one could say that there is the potential here to rebuild a state-of-the-art network in every respect."

"But if you were bound and determined to find a silver lining to this catastrophe, one could say that there is the potential here to rebuild a state-of-the-art network in every respect."

Later after the reporter left he finished his thoughts.

"...yea, and there is an even greater chance it will be made with copper."

Regardless of the outcome, 50 billion dollars of federal money (plus donations) is being poured into that area. This sickens me most. Atleast when the asian areas were hit with the wave it was something unexpected. These people are living below sea level next to an ocean. We need to pump the area full of water and forget about it, not rebuild.

If Officials do the right thing...

New Orleans has the potential to be the model for which all future cities and expansions/Upgrades are compared to. Yes, N.O. may not be the BEST place to do this, but where else is under the right conditions at the moment? They basically are working from a little more than SCRATCH. Do it right. Smart Buildings, Smart Infrastructure, Renewable Energy, Smart Engineering. All of the COOL-ASS Emerging technologies Ive been hearing about for the past decade. Let the New New Orleans exemplify our Engineering prowess to the rest of the Nation and the Rest of the World. Dont let China be the model.
