The first beta for Firefox 1.5 should be available tomorrow. In the interim, this blog offers some impressions of the changes users can expect with the new version, based on tinkering with Deer Park Alpha 2. The largest change appears to be a reworking of the browser update feature. A second beta is expected on October 5, with the final release on October 28.

Picture full quality refresh?

Any chance this new version may have picture quality refresh for those of us on dial-up using an accelator for browsing purposes? It's pain to have to switch back and forth between FF and IE. Possibly a future version?

Interesting.....

"reworking of the browser update feature."

So does that mean it will actually WORK???? I've never gotten FF to update through the update feature, usually it just hangs and goes nowhere.

Am I the only one that has a problem with FF STARTING sometimes? Double click FF to start, it opens, and does nothing. the ! symbol is right next to HELP, instead of in the right corner. Don't know what started this happening, and I have no extensions or heavy themes running. I use Pinball 0.9.9.3, but it does the same at home, and there I only have the default theme running..... Let's just hope this is all fixed in 1.5.

Re: Interesting.....

I've had the same problems with the update feature not working. Glad I'm not the only one!

It means you have a corrupt profile (probably due to a buggy extension, like Tabbrowser Extensions). Try uninstalled TBE to see if it fixes itself. If not, refer to »kb.mozilla.org/ to rebuild your profile without losing any of your bookmarks and other data!

There are many fans of FF, but regardless of it's popularity, there are still a number of holes that need filling. Until they are filled I am forced to consider FF a second rate browser. Just keep those updates coming.

Yeah, because we all know IE has holes
Or Opera, or [insert your favorite here]....

Re: Interesting.....

I find the Mozilla Suite to be far more stable than Firefox, to have more accessible features, including a friendlier and more familiar interface. I see no benefits in using Firefox except the improved handling of extensions.

Which holes are you referring. I am not saying that FF is perfect but i am curious to which ones you are referring.

Blog says it will be available Friday; not Thurs.

The linked blog says that the 1.5 Beta will be available on Friday and not Thursday as it says in the headline. Maybe the the blog is wrong and the release on Thursday info was found elsewhere.

All in all, the new version of Firefox is going to be very good - the Beta version will be available from the Mozilla Website on Friday - so, head over there and download a copy.

haha, this guy is probably the lead developer for IE... I've never once had Firefox "screw up my system". I think that's a bit of a stretch. Can you tell us exactly what firefox did to hose your system?

Funny man! IE crashed on my newly installed and updated XP system on regular basis! FF? Not once!

Odd how, literally, opening IE and AdAware finds something.
Over a year of FF, and not a blip.

However, I do get the odd pop-up after being told FF blocked it. Of course for IE, thats the norm.

Problems?

I have had none of these update problems or "screw up your system" issues with FF on 1.4. (well, it never screwed up my system, but the update didn't really work well until after 1.2)

The update issues might be resolved by completely uninstalling your old versions of FF, and reinstalling the current one. I'd wouldn't be surprised if the issue was more on how Windows handles the old registry entires than with FF itself.

Re: Problems?

I DID have problems intially with FF updates. They would just hang. However, I learned that if you have a check mark in "Allow Web Sites To Install Software", everything went fine.

So, keep it off the majority of the time. See an update, turn it on, finish, turn it off. The same problem ocurred trying to install Extensions.

FireFox is defnitely a beautiful thing.
Unlike IE, it actually works, and actually does what you tell it to, or not to.

Why is everyone so misinformed?

For those complaining about the update feature. All it has done so far is open a url and tell you to download the setup file. The Deer Park Alpha feature is the auto updating feature that won't require much user interaction except for most likely clicking next once or twice. But it will alleviate the need to manually download updates.

For those complaining of Firefox messing up their system, apparently they don't know what a "system" is. It's a computer not a browser. Firefox isn't integrated into windows like IE therefore it can't do what is mentioned here. Good day.

Latest Branch.

Latest Branch now has the official branding "Firefox Beta 1"..

Looks like they only have to fix a UI change and some minor things before it goes public.

What can be expected is about the same as the current branch, little will change...

some of the changes:

- SVG support
- canvas support
- "Clear Private Data" Option
- New options UI
- Per site Cookie controls
- Improved Extension Manager
- Improved pop-up blocking
- Drag and Drop reordering of tabs
- Instant Back/Forward navigation
- Reporter Tool
- Updater that does Incremental Updates
- Mac profile Migrator

Around 3200 Bugs have been fixed since 1.0 over all platforms.

Not Official, Just changes I have noticed

Re: Clipboard Bug?

Yep, this has to be the single most annoying bug in FF. I've been following bugzilla on this and there still hasn't been any resolution as they can't reliably reproduce it.

Yup.. and the same bug pops up in IE from time to time too, so it's not just pointed at FF.

And the next beta will be 1.6... Sorry, but FF will never be ready for Primetime.
