Verizon EVDO Price Cuts
$80 plan moves to $60
by Karl Bode Saturday 27-Aug-2005 tags: prices · wireless
Reuters reports that Verizon Wireless is set to lower the price of its EVDO mobile broadband service some 25% if you're a mobile phone user, a move many of our users have been eager for. The unlimited data consumption tier, which offers speeds around 500kbps/100kbps (with bursts) will be moved from $80 a month to $60 a month.

Yea but it's a great deal and if you are always in the car or need access asap, $60 is great. Business Write off

Agreed, $60.00 is still a little pricey for the casual user.

I'd like to see them bring it down between 40 and 50 ... I think it will sell much better then.

if you are sure you can make money on trading. even 6000/mo seem cheap. That's it, only if you are sure you can make money, and the only one who said making money from the market is easy are someone who's new to it.

Are you saying you can't make $63 or $64 to cover your wireless internet a month? No I am not too new to it, nor is my father, we have it worked out. Good old CyberTrader.

FANTASTIC!

I plan to use EVDO as my 2nd connection once FiOS becomes available. It was a tough choice to make at $80/mo, but a no-brainer at $60/mo.

This isn't promo pricing, is it?

They were probably selling that service to business users for the most part at $80.

The price cut is likely aimed at attracting the non-business consumer. More sales even at a lower price will help build their customer base for the product = more $$$.

They might as well drop it now before some of their competitors do.

Frankly, I'm surprised they were selling it at all. I went in to a VZ wireless store around 2 years ago, and it was like pulling teeth to get details. I got the distinct impression that they didn't want my $$$.

True, it probably sold itself to those that have needed it in the past.

EVDO could fill in gaps of wired broadband

With EVDO becoming more widespread and with future enhancements promising T1 speeds, the technology may be a reasonable alternative to other wireless broadband solutions.

Re: EVDO could fill in gaps of wired broadband

Not quite. Besides the lack of speed compared to other wireless techs, EVDO is only designed to support a relatively small number of users per area. It's great for a mobile connection, but it's nowhere near to being a primary connection for any significant quantity of people. HSDPA might be closer to the real deal, but it's a ways away.

Re: EVDO could fill in gaps of wired broadband

Just recently got rid of Verizon EVDO. It was $80/mo. Pricey, but if it did what it said, I could have lived with it. Problem is, best I ever got was about 117K measured by several different sites, and that was in a car about 1/4 mile from their tower (4 (or is it 5?) bars signal). Couldn't even get a broadband signal at home. Verizon tech was at a loss to help. Brand new HP laptop with XP Pro. Took it (Verizon) back within the 15 day return period. Nice technology, but it's not ripe yet. Yea, read between the lines in the service agreement, they are worried about it overloading their network. No video or music file downloads.

Oh, and there is only one airtime plan. Thankfully it's unlimited.

Att Wireless

Why is it that att only charges $30 a month for their service? Is there a difference between the 2 services?

Because AT&T/Cingular's data speeds don't come anywhere close to Verizon's data speeds. EDGE, which is the fastest data service offered by AT&T/Cingular, is about as fast as Verizon's 1xRTT service (about 60-80kbps). EVDO smokes EDGE in every possible way.

Verizon and Sprint average around 120kps on standard RXT. Edge is around 90.

EVDO is around 600kps to as high as 1700kps

I have recently moved to evdo for all our data on the move needs. The beauty of falling back on edge is nice.

Those speeds are low. I average 900 kps and burst to 2200. It's a real treat when dealing with large files and remote admin from a laptop on the run.

@direcpc.com
Actually, as I recall EDGE (all capitals, it's an acronym) tops out around 150-160 Kbps, if you have a Class 10 device. And the data service provided by Sprint and Verizon is 1xRTT, not RXT.

Bosstones, you can't fall back from EVDO to EDGE. EDGE is Cingular, EVDO is Verizon. You're thinking of 1xRTT.

FightingBlue

@direcpc.com
One more thing... you can't compare EDGE and EVDO. EVDO is only available in 30-40 metropolitan areas, whereas EDGE is available almost everywhere. Besides which, EVDO is a 3G technology, and EDGE is 2.5G. The proper competitor to EVDO is UMTS/HSDPA.

I relish the day...

If you need this service, $60 is a deal.

This is great news

This is great news. I currently have Sprint and was really thinking about Verizon untill I saw there crappy coverage. This will force Sprint to lower there price and once they unveil EVDO within 3 months, it will be excellent!

$60 is still a bit steep. I'll get on the wagon when it hits $40/mo.

Where is $30 Cingular/AT&T service? I though it was also $80/mo

Re: This is great news

This isnt meant as a replacement for broadband at home. This service is for business and high end techies. Don't expect them to be competing with Comcast for end users.

question

Can this be used as a residential connection?

$60/month for 500k/100k would be awesome compared to the $25/month for 56k @ 28.8k dialup I'm paying for now.

..

It was never meant, and neither is HSDPA, to offer a replacement for your main broadband connection. This is only meant to supplement you when your mobile, and in the case of business users, always mobile.

I promise you won't see EVDO, EDGE, or HSDPA below the $60 price point anytime soon.. Simply because if it was priced below that, too many people will start to use it as a replacement.. and damn near bring the overall system to capacity.. as it is only meant to serve about 25 concurrent connections per sector. Now, i'm not saying the system is going to be unreliable or even slower as more users use it.. but if everyone started to use it as they do their primary at home connections, you would certainly see the difference. Only so much can be done with the air interface to keep it optimal. Reuse only goes so far, and spectrum is limited.

$60 is a steal.

Anyone ever heard of WIFI?

Honestly, does anyone actually expect to pay for such a service?? With SOOOOOO many WIDE-OPEN wifi routers in businesses and residences, how can Verizon actually expect people to PAY (let me re-phrase that, THROW DOWN THE TOILET) good money for such a service??

I mean really, with a laptop, and a good signal to someone's wifi.. you could actually use voip and ditch your cell phone
Another good idea from your uncle Earl!

Re: Anyone ever heard of WIFI?

5 Years from now all internet will be wireless via some form of communitcations. Comcast and the bells better enjoy the profits now, because they are coming to an end.

10+ mb wireless will be widespread within 10 years. This number may be way underestimated too.

I guess the catch is BUNDLED SERVICES.

$59.99 monthly access w/ 2-yr customer agreement and qualifying voice plan. Otherwise still $79.99.

BFD, Thanks a lot! I guess the catch is BUNDLED SERVICES.

Guess they don't want new customers!
