I have Comcast and if you go to their forum here at BBR, it is almost universal that Comcast's portal is rarely used. A portal would be the last thing I would consider when making a broadband choice. But hey, who knows, maybe the marketing types did their surveys and focus groups, and for the younger buyers a portal would make a difference. Let's hear from them what they think. -- My Web Page Join Red Room Forum

| I just ordered comcast for my apartment (im 20, maybe thats not THAT young). All I want them to do is supply my apartment with fast internet service, if they give me any software im never gonna use it. As for a portal, nothing could replace google (with firefox live bookmarks ftw).
Most people on BBR are pretty educated about internet though. This article most likely refers to kids who instead surf the MTV forums all day.

| By adding a portal, ISP's introduce an additional revenue stream - from selling advertising (or splitting the ad revenues generated from someone else selling advertising - like, say, Yahoo). This, in theory, allows them to charge you less than they would otherwise. | |

I don't know...I'm an "older" web user and I think portals are nice...one stop shopping for content. I don't see the attraction of Google as a homepage...staring at an empty search box just doesn't excite me. I knew the comments of "portals are for nOObs" would begin spilling over after I read the article. Some web users, both new and advanced like to have "content" available and organized to his or her preference. The nice thing about My Yahoo is you can add or subtract any content ...so one can unclutter the "mess". It's strictly personal preference....but I like content neatly bundeled so I don't have to search the net....I like it brought to me.

A great one with lots of info is weatherunderground. Yahoo weather is a nice simple one, uses weather channel data, but it's not as good as WU.

| Re: DSL & the "Yahoo Factor" Me too. The weather is about the only thing that I find universally relevent to me in the beginning of the day (what to wear, how to plan out the day), and with Opera I have a search box right at the top of my page.
Also, I personally always open stuff from a blank page, so if I was stuck with IE, I'd prefer it to not load anything on open, because I usually have somewhere to go and don't want to wait.
The other thing is with tabbed browsing, there's little reason to try and consolodate things on one page unless it's doing more than just putting boxes next to each other. Something like dig or memingo is useful consolodation, as is Google News, but just taking several sites on one page?
I don't see that as useful. Just make a session group of the pages you'd have in your "custom" page. Then tile or arrange to taste as pages. Or just use a folder of bookmarks and tab through them.
This way you can get them arranged so you can read everything, rather than having things stripped or shrunk to fit or however Yahoo does it. -- Opera 8.02(Build 7680); Windows XP Pro SP2;Athlon 64 3400+; 1GB PC3200 DDR; 1M/128k DSL; NOD32(Version 2.5.25); Outpost Pro 2.7;Proxomitron 4.5j Grypen 7/26/05(Opera mod),GPG ID:0x0A1C6EE3

| I do like the customizability of tabbed browsers and portals, but would base my decision of a service provider more on price/performace, since most of the features I use are available to anyone regardless of their 'net connection.
I may make an exception if there are useful features available to 'subscribers only.' But that would depend on the features themselves.
I do like having access to Encyclopaedia Britannica (..yes I've heard of Wikipedia too..) through SBC Yahoo! Besides, the 'net service is priced right at the moment (though the prices are promotional,) so I'll take the portal with subscriber only add-ons as a fringe benefit, but not necessarily a deciding factor.

| Re: Totally Tubular! Umm, that happened years ago, and depending on where you look (YIM and the Y! toolbar come to mind), they're worse than AOL. Google is starting down that path as well.
I remember when Yahoo was a useful site, with unparalleled search capabilities and exceptional webmail. Then, they started to pander more and more towards their greedy shareholders and advertisers, and have now descended into a quivering, pitiful mass of marketing mayhem. Now, everything they touch gets corrupted beyond recognition, just like AOL.

| No portal needed. No ISP branded portal for me..
Just give us an unfetted, clean pipe to the internet..
We do know what that 'home' icon in our browsers is for.. (and how to set it) don't force your crappy apps / browsers / dialers / whatever on us and don't go messing with our computer settings, especially adding your branding logos all over the place. We don't want it nor need it.
If you offer 'perks', then offer them in a usable form and not require some pos, proprietary, spy-wear laden software download.. most os's come with software that will do a similar function.. (mp3, video, email, etc.. ) we want to use it (or our chosen alternative) if you offer webspace, make it real, without 'hot link' restrictions, and allow php/mysql, (or sim) and/or other web applications so we can at least use it.. and, oh yeah, it must have true ftp access and NO ADS (*points to sbc/yahoo*)
I suppose i could go on and on.. but won't.. I"m an ex PacBell SBC dsl user and flat out refused to switch to that yahoo crap.. (and when i forced to use the yahoo provided mail servers I noticed a great increase in both spam and messages not getting delivered (both ways)
Bottom line.. just give uis fAST, reliable access. period. -- Webmaster Steve - - - - - - - - - - - - »ppnhosting.com »sphenterprizes.com »pokemonpalace.net

| Cheap Access + Optional Portal at No Extra Charge I'm paying ~ 30/month for my Verizon 3/768 connection, which I think is a very good deal. Along with that, I'm now given the choice of portals (MSN or Yahoo) at no extra charge. I get a dirt-cheap, relatively fast connection along with high quality streaming music, large email box with POP3 access, and other assorted things which I don't even know about yet, for no increase in price. What's not to like about that? | |

| My bill is actually cheaper now that I have Verizon Yahoo DSL, instead of just Verizon DSL...hooooray for that!
Maybe I'm just not a minimalist, but rather I enjoy having all that content in front of me, or at least having the option to pick and choose what I want in front of me when I fire up the browser or get bored and am ready to return "home". A little mail, a little calendar, a little notepad, weather, fav stock info, video content, music, news, video feeds, and IM. I like the "integrated" look instead of searching all over the place or having to open too many windows or tabs that eat up my computer's memory resources. I don't find the "portal" cluttered at all. Clutter to me is a lot of advertisements filling every whitespace on the page, 30 different type fonts and sizes; not boatloads of content that I can personzlize to my tastes.
Heck, maybe I'm just lazy.
