More debt forgiven, Salzano followup
(old news - 03:08PM Thursday Aug 18 2005)
tags: business · scam
It has been a year since customers began to realize they had been scammed by Novergence, conned into spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on leases for broadband equipment worth only a grand or so. Clean up from the train wreck continues, as four more leasing companies agreed to forgive millions in leasing deals, which some 11,000 customers were taken in by. In case you missed it, Norvergence chief Thomas N. Salzano started a second business dubbed "Charity Shack", which isn't going so well.

Organized crime getting into internet scams

Just a little more proof that organized crime sees the internet and associated activities as a lucrative field for their criminal enterprises. The FBI has to pursue these just like they would any other mafia enterprise.

Re: Organized crime getting into internet scams

ONe of my clients was cought in part of this scam. When they told me what they were getting, I told them MANY TIMES to stay away as there was NO-WAY they would be able to deliver on their promise. 5 months later, they were switching back to PacBell and all other services.

Also, I don't see how you see this tied to the internet. It was all done in paper, and involved telecommunications. Phone service, 800 numbers, telephone systems, internet connections, and unlimited sprint cellular service. What am I missing?

People tend to believe anything related to the Internet...for cheap, free, too technical for them to understand.

If you want, I'll dig up a few Juice Boosted, phishing, Nigerian business offers, or spam emails to offer some proof.

Re: Organized crime getting into internet scams

I understand what you are saying - I know. Maybe I asked this because in my clients case, they were solicited by phone and by mail.

It's MY understanding that they found businesses to solicit based on financial data they mined somewhere.

Increasingly, the line between telecom and and the internet is becoming blurred. The same backbones that carry our precious TCP/IP packets also carry a lot of voice traffic, too. T1s used to provide lines for a mid-sized PBX phone system are far from uncommon. From what I read, these guys were not only scam leasing the equipment, they were retailing Qwest and Sprint services, who ultimately forced them into bankruptcy to the tune of $30M.

I believe these days they would call it "morality-challenged".
