Public relations problems worried Microsoft
(old news - 08:49AM Wednesday Jul 13 2005)
tags: business · spyware
Clickz News quotes an anonymous inside source, who states Microsoft has called off talks to acquire adware maker Claria. Microsoft, who it was rumored was willing to pay up to $500 million for the company, was concerned about the PR fallout from such a deal. They're still in the market to buy companies dealing in "behavioral targeting technology" however.

More likely, they're looking for a less-known spyware company.

In other words, Microsoft is looking for a deal that won't kill one or more of their product lines. Acquiring a well-known spyware company makes any anti-spyware product suspect. Acquiring a well-known spyware company makes their OS's security even more suspect. Even if Claria were free, the cost to their other lines of business would be prohibitive.

Microsoft Tanks Claria Stock

Well after this new claria's stock price will drop. And then just maybe it will be cheap enough for microsoft to grab up. On the other hand they may have found out things that they don't want to be associated with.

just went to micro$ofts web site to get some drivers for my cousin and it locked my machine - Of course I am using unbuntu and firefox - funny thing is when I unplugged my network cable I got my mouse back and disconnected from their site - seems everything works fine now but I sure hope they weren't trying to put sypware or root kit on my computer. they will hear from if I find anything. piss off microsoft - what are you now keeping people that don't run your os from your web site.

I think your on to something. I was just surfing blackberry.com and was trying to compare a couple of the models. All of a sudden, all my IE windows spazzed out and closed on me. I think M$$$$$ is trying to prevent me from finding out info on a mobile PDA with a non-MS based OS!!!!!

[serious]yes, IE did randomly close everything on me, but I don't immediately jump to the conclusion Bill is behind all of this. I've surfed blackberry.com many a time and haven't had this problem[/serious]

Re: '

Yeah but, with all the many programs running on your PC and all the threats on the net ANYTHING could have cause IE to spazz. Instantly blaming it on MS without being sure is not smart.

Deal Dead

I really do not understand all the Microsoft bashing here. To me it's pretty simple, if you don't like the product, DON'T USE IT. If you have found something that works for you, then fine, use it instead. Yeah, Microsoft has its problems, but a way shorter learning curve than any Linux products does that I've ever tried.

Hey guys, did you ever consider what would happen if Star Trek perchance waged war with Star Wars? Who do you think might win such a conflict and why?

Hmmmmmmm If it was the Federation, Borg, Klingons, Romulans and those beings that even the Borg run from .......... against all of Star Wars, Star Trek would win hands down.

My vote is that The Galactic Empire would crush every civilization in Star Trek. Imperial Star Destroyers rock! Not only that, lack of a standing army sure does suck if you're the Federation.

Re: What about this?

My vote goes for Star Trek as well. Then Borg alone could defeat the Empire... so just image what adding a few Romulan Warbirds or Klingon Birds of Prey would do. Yoda's gonna need more that the force to be with him if he's going to win this battle.

Its Me Again

@170.190.x.x
The Borg, Species 8472 & the Q would be able to easily defeat the whole of Star Wars, good & evil. I am sure there are some other races I am forgetting, but those 3 are kickass.

Microsoft, Claria Deal Dead

Microsoft (notice I did not say M$) is already suffering the consequences of public opinion. They aren't so dumb that they'll pay a half-billion dollars for a deal that will cost them even more in the long run. The outrage over Claria is well deserved, but making stupid comments about much MS sucks removes all credibility from the topic. MS needs to get the message that no one likes the idea of handing over a fortune to adware makers.

Hey Microsoft

If you really have a need to spend money please donate say 60 million not 500 million to a Non-Profit I work for that could really use it for a worthy cause. Come on I know Mrs Gates has a soft spot for non-profits.

Stupid move on MS part

MS could have said "yes we are buying out Claria. We are going to shut them down and put the programmers into other area's." Instead they listened to the few that were bashing MS for buying Claria With everything from "MS can spy on us!" to MS wants to push their own type of Spyware."

I couldn't agree more, but looking at the flip side they would still get backlash.

This would look like "If you can't beat'em join'em" kind of situation. No matter what people would freak and think that their next version of windows would have some type of spyware.

No matter what, if you buy Claria/gator/asshats you PAY them for making this crapware. THEY PROFIT from their exploits. YOU PAY THEM for doing in my opinion ILLEGAL software installations.

I also believe that Microsoft did not want to purchase Claria due to the fact that Claria down the road may get sued.

I think Microsoft realized that this was not a win/win situation even if it would just put Claria out of business.

Well , one thing is sure now : MS did not want to buy Claria tu shut them down because if that was the case , then they wouldn't have come back on their decision because they are afraid that it may hurt their reputation.

I don't know what they really wanted to do with Claria but like you said , i think that they wanted them to push their own form of advertising

Yippee!

Well, this is certainly good news, but it could always change OR they find someone cheaper, better, or whatever.

As far as MS bashing here, well, I am not too partial to MS, BUT it's pretty much the only option as far as OS are concerned. I would like to forsee a great competitor rising against MS. Then you would have to be as rich as Bill Gates or richer for that to happen!

Hmmm.....maybe I can use my really old 1986 Apple computer. Yeah! That'll work......:p
