SunRocket VoIP users in our VoIP forum report that the service has been down since early this afternoon. Worse, there's been little communication from SunRocket as to the outage cause, the website has had trouble staying online, and the 1-800 support number has been overloaded for much of the day.

No Dial Tone

THIS SuCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Former SR customer

@microsoft.com

Re: No Dial Tone

SunRocket.com is also very much down. I just logged in to see a blank statement: "Thank you for registering your SunRocket Account. Your account will be active shortly." None of my settings are there.

I am switching to Vonage asap, because this is the second unexplained outage, in the past two months and they are crazy to think it's okay to do that!

My regular phone service has gone out...... Once...but it's an outage... Phone tech moved the wrong pair in the RT and gave my line to someone else... They fixed a day later finally... oops...

Wait, twice, the other was a cable cut by an excavating crew...

Point? Nothing is foolproof..

SR better have a good explanation.....

I hope SR has a valid explanation for today's 5 plus hour outage. Mine SR service came back on briefly at around 6:15 pm cst and then went back out at 6:38 pm cst!

This really is not going to be good for SR's reputation as the outages have become more frequent and lasting longer in the past several weeks.

Just my take on the situation

I've had about all I can stand. It's embarassing to have everyone we know always asking "what's wrong with your phone".

Re: SR techs....?

LOL, what will everyone switch to when Vonage goes down for a few hours?

Even the wireline Bells can't have complete 100% uptime, although they only seem to be down when someone cuts a line, yet you expect new techology, such as VOIP, to be up 100%.

There are too many points of failure to have VoIP as a primary line of communication for a home / business (cell / wireline being #1).

My phone works....

My POTS line works great!! I have never had any problems with my phone ever. It always works when I pick it up, and guess what...when I dial 911 they know exactly where I am calling from. (Yes I know that E911 is coming to the VOIP world)

VOIP IMO relies on too many independent factors to be super reliable. I'm sure that SR is trying to restore service but who knows if the problem is anything in their control??

POTS works for me because I don't make 5 bazillion minutes of long distance calls each month, though I call who I want when I want. My bill averages around $28/month including all the stupid taxes, and I have Caller ID and Voicemail and a few other little features that I never use.

After my rambling though, I hope you guys that do have SR get your phones back soon. This long outage seems a bit crazy if you ask me.

Quick question...Why would they have to take the whole system down so no one has phone service to upgrade a VM server??

No telephone provider worth a damned upgrades mid-day. Its called a maintenance window, something that is dying out as old school telecom folks retire. There is a reason you don't mess with your class 5 switches and databases during the day.

Good to hear that you are only paying $28 for all your phone calls. If I was only paying $28 for land line, all inclusive, I'd still be on utility service lines. (Even though I have been "had" with Packet8's new fee, I'm still paying less, and to their credit, I've never had an outage when I used the phone.)

But, any phone call 8 miles from my Central Office is metered at 5 cents a minute. That's not exactly long distance. I got tired of $100+ phone bills from only intraLATA calling. It's not entirely SBC's fault they kept Ameritech's (and Illinois Bell's) outrageous phone fees and price structure.

I just love the fact that there are always posts like this, especially today when my POTS SBC line was out for several hours. No dial tone as someone severed a cable and my whole neighborhood was out.

Huge differance between a severed cable and a planned upgrade.

Why weren't customers notified if they were only upgrading ?

The web site and the service seem to me to be 2 different things.

I want to say they are tied together on this i know vonage is. When they did the upgrade to vm the web site was not working nor the phone but it was only out for 10 mins it was out. I thing i do like about vonage is that you can see if they are having system problems when you log in.

Hello Ma Bell?

Surprised?

2 cent

@calltech.com

Heres the reason

Dear SunRocket Member,

On behalf of SunRocket and all of our dedicated employees, I would like to apologize for any inconvenience that resulted from a SunRocket network disruption that occurred on Monday, July 11. The disruption was caused by recent surges in subscribers and call volumes. Unfortunately, one of the partitions in our network was unable to handle the demand, and it took several hours for our engineers to fully restore the network. While thousands of subscribers remained in service during the disruption, we failed to meet our reliability standards. Last week, we activated a new partition that doubled our capacity, but we had not begun the process of rebalancing the system load between the partitions prior to Monday's disruption. While that rebalancing is now underway, we will be activating a third partition within the next week to further augment our system capacity and improve the reliability of the SunRocket network.

We also recognize that we need to improve our ability to provide real-time status and notices during network disruptions, though our primary goal is to ensure that our network is fully operational at all times. You expect and deserve reliable phone service, and SunRocket remains committed to providing exceptional service at an exceptional value.

As an expression of our regret for any inconvenience you may have suffered, we will add 10 points into your RocketRewards account in the next few days. Thousands of SunRocket members have taken advantage of the RocketRewards Referral Program, and we greatly appreciate your contributions in spreading the word about SunRocket to friends, family, neighbors and colleagues. In the coming months, we will be expanding your opportunities for earning RocketRewards points, as well as introducing many more redemption choices. You can learn more about RocketRewards at »www.sunrocket.com/community/referrals/.

We are continuously striving to improve your service and enhance our ability to serve you better. Thank you for being a valued SunRocket member.

Sincerely,

Kevin Bennis

Re: Heres the reason

Still not convinced... Switching to Vonage.

FromVonage2SR

Re: Heres the reason

To all those souls who decided to switch to Vonage from SR I have something to say:

SR strives to provide service at a very reasonable cost and I sincerely find the service to be pretty acceptable and good. Yes, agreed there has been a severe outage and yes a very detailed explanation was provided along with few credit points. I have been with Vonage for 2 years, prior to to SR - They had quite a few outages, very little to none explanations given, no credits given and more critically - their 911 service REPEATEDLY failed to connection to correct dispatcher

And - don*t we all have outages and strive to minimize them, going forward? From the nature of comments all I see that just because USD199.00 p.a. was provided by you, you think that you need a rectification, an explanation, a credit and everything as of yesterday ... well, then - go ahead and join Vonage/Pon-age/whatever -- you will realize that tele-com. industry is quite like your wife and your family - where there are outages and you just need to sit tight and tolerate it, with companies like SR at least STRIVING to give you the best at a most reasonable time-frame.

jpm414

@comcast.net

stop your bashing

From my experience SunRocket is an excellent company with a great service. Unfortunately they are forced to rely on the huge corporations such as Comcast which control the lines they operate on. Blame Comcast, not SunRocket.

Moment of Truth

@microsoft.com

Re: stop your bashing

SunRocket is in bad luck if they can't even articulate well to their customers neither why the outages occur nor what SunRocket would do to prevent them in the future.
