Michigan Bets on BPL
Wants to be advanced broadband 'showcase'
The Michigan Broadband Development Authority (MBDA) has announced they've closed on a $520,000 loan that will bring broadband over powerline (BPL) technology to two Michigan communities. Grand Ledge and St. Johns will be the locations of two BPL network installations the MBDA claim will make Michigan " a showcase for advanced broadband technology deployments." No information on speed or price, though this Hometown Life article indicates they'll offer three speed tiers.

Glad to see it. This how things get done. The DSL roll out was horrible but they over came the problems for the most part.

MBDA

Where do they get their money? Is this just more taxpayer money being thrown down the tubes?

Of course tax payers will pay the loan off in the end.

Re: MBDA

I would be willing to bet that revenue that is generated from the consumers PAYING for the BPL will go towards paying the loan. Do I think it will be 100% FREE from Taxpayer cost? No, but what is?

That's irrelevant. The loan money has to have a source. And someone has to cover it if defaulted upon.

Re: MBDA

How is THAT irrelevant? The MBDA does not LOAN money out nor does the MEDC (Which the MBDA came out of). The loan is either from a finacial institution or investors.

I am a bit surprised at your concern over this "Possibly" being paid out of Taxpayer money...

As we dish out billions and billions to Iraq, Afganistan, Africa, the UN!

The MBDA is merely attempting to get Braodband available to areas that the Good Ole Bells and cable companies don't want to cover.

Why complain about that money when we're burning it on worthless technology like BPL?

Re: Hell yea!

naaa... DTE is too dumb to do something like this. Besides, they have a hard enough time properly maintaining their power grid, throw in internet service and it'll be a disaster.

Good

This project has been in talks for over 3 months, and we had the opportunity to do some testing for the MBDA due to the closeness of our offices; demonstrating the positive, and outlining what little negative can actually come of the deployment, and how long it should take to make the negative negated so to speak; Of course this is based on the amount of time that it can stay deployed so that problems have time to get rectified according to FCC limitations. We also had the opportunity of being included in talks about pricing plans and speeds, You won' be disappointed if they stick to the pricing agreed on during the portion of the meeting we were privy to.

finally

Its about time they get this running. I've been waiting for it for a long time, since I have no broadband options. Although I'm not quite in either of these 2 towns, I'm about 10 miles out of each of them. I've emailed consumers and they said that it should be available to alot of people by 2006

Re: finally

I wouldn't count on that if I were you. The test roll outs so far have all been dismal failures because of inteference issues, among other things. Seems none of the equipment suppliers so far are capable of providing equipment that meets FCC guidelines for incidental radiators. Bottom line: BPL's radiated interference is going to be it's death knell. It simply cannot and will not be tolerated in the end.

On top of this, Congress is starting to climb the FCC's ass about BPL, and, since Michael powell is gone, the new FCC chairman is apparently amenable to rectifying the FCC's mistake.

Just when you thought all was lost...

RF Problems? ...and FUD

Does this BPL installation cause interference on amateur radio frequencies like most BPL installations that exist today?

And I found this little FUD gem in the press release:
"Performance of BPL is similar to that of cable modem, but unlike cable offers the same speeds both upstream and downstream."

Cable can offer the same speed in both directions. Most cable companies just keep the upload at a lower speed to discourage servers and save on costly bandwidth charges. I would bet that the BPL provider will eventually do the same.
