| I'll admit it... I use Netscape 8 It is ashame that so many of you have been turned off of Netscape just because of its affiliation with AOL. While I agree that AOL sucks badly, I find the new Netscape 8 to be quite useful.
At first I too was not going to try the new Netscape simply because of AOL, but because of my love for all things technology I decided to test drive it anyway. To my surprise I ended up liking it and now have it as my primary browser (of course I still have IE, Firefox and Opera in case I get bored )
Anyway, I think the dual-rendering engines is great. I like being able to define which rendering engine I want to use on the fly and on a per site basis. It is also refreshing to finally have another browser that I can use to go to the windowsupdate.com site and have it actually work! I also like the multitude of security features I can control on a per site basis (for example disabling ActiveX, javascript, Java, cookies, images, pop-ups and/or VBscript). The passcard and form fill options work quite nicely as well and I like how highly customizable the My Sidebar and all purpose toolbars are.
I have read that there are people out there that have experienced several bugs with Netscape 8 and while I have encountered some minor ones (like some shortcuts keys not working and the back button jumping too far back in my history) I have not had any major crashes or hangs.
I now that some of you have probably sworn off Netscape for various reasons (I know I did after version 7.1), but I really think this version is at least worth a try. If you give it a whirl with a fairly open mind you may just end up liking it as well . Let there be no mistake though, I still think AOL as a company sucks

| Re: I'll admit it... I use Netscape 8 said by mers2 :Just curious, did you read the EULA before installing? Netscape reserves the right to make changes to your computer without giving you notice. I did read it and I do not find it all that different from MANY of the EULAs I have agreed to over the years for various software. Just because they reserve a right does not mean they will ever invoke that right. I am quite sure they know what the repercussions of such an action would bring. Besides, I opted out of the option for them to automatically update the browser if an update is available and I do know where the Add/Remove button is if I ever become dissatisfied with the browser . | |

@comcast.net | I like the new Netscape also, but I was getting some crashes with it so I had to go back to FF until the next version is released. I do like the interface on NS, I think its pretty slick.

The thing is be honest.. If you don't like Netscape because it's slow, that's fine, but I can't see that.. Netscape is the fastest browser I ever ran, plus I can make it work on ANY site! Unlike Firefart, Exploder, or Oh!-Please-UH! (Opera)... LOL

| re: netscape/aol I started using firefox a couple years back and it has drastically reduced the amount of crapware that i have to deal with. Netscape used to be my browser, but being butt-buddies with AOL scared me off since AOL is evil... insinuates itself into EVERYTHING (kinda like microsoft or symantec, but sleazier) I've been trying for years to clean things up so my computer does what I want, when I want, no more no less. The only drawback I found to firefox was that I did have to download a couple of dll's separately in order to view certain windows based media on some pages, and a couple of yahoo sites and so forth that used java went a trifle squirrelly on me. BUT, I found a plug-in that actually lets me right click on any page and use IE to render it within a firefox tab should I choose to do so. Thus my computer is still less exposed, and I can still see what I want when I want. Firefox and kaspersky have fixed everything I want fixed, and no more netscape/aol/crapware ugliness. YAY | |
