Broadband Via Gas Lines
BIG (Broadband in Gas) is born
Corante and the Red Ferret Journal discuss one company's plans to offer 10Gbps Wireless transmission of ultra-wideband signals using existing gas pipelines. The company's press release goes into only surface detail, but insists the idea requires no modding of the gas line. As specific as the company gets: Nethercomm "introduces signals into the gas lines using inexpensive equipment located at existing neighborhood network hubs and extracts data at the customer or business premises with end user-installed equipment."

Hum.. An idea with explosive potential...

CUSTOMER: I am having problems getting a connection...
TECH: Exactly what is the problem?

CUSTOMER: I think the line is cloged?
TECH: How can you tell?

CUSTOMER: I unscrewed one of the gass line. Smells really bad. Give me a second. Sounds of a match being struck and burnning. A Boom then the line goes dead.
TECH: Well it sounds like you have solved your problem... News at eleven!

Are you referring to excess gas in the digestive tract (flatulence) or whipping oneself as a means of arousing or heightening sexual feeling (flagellation).

The word flagulation does not exist.

Nice article. I remember last year seeing High School seniors protesting because they didn't graduate. They didn't graduate because they failed to pass the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test). Several of the protesters carried signs with inaccurate spelling and incorrect word usage. The silliest one had used the phrase "Gov Busch" instead of "Gov Bush".

Education in this state is a joke. More and more money seems to go to administration as opposed to student instruction and it shows.

Even worse, I have seen striking teachers carrying signs with misspelled words. A lot of kids will be having rather bleak futures because so many people think throwing more money into the government schools will solve all the problems. My real estate taxes have been going up by double digits for years; I live in Fairfax County, Va. More than half of our taxes go for government schools which are hiring administrators at a much faster rate than teachers.

Phake news, both numbers on press release(very well done press release] belong to cell phones, one in California and one in Arkansas, feel sorry if they are actual working numbers.
But the response would indicate that there are a lot of folks who want something that works

It will still go over an electrical line. There saying that the line will be transfered through gas to a central unit and then go through a normal electrical line from there.

Yes, but the latency sucks. Ping times can be on the order of 2 months, depending on when your delivery date is. Playing a FPS online will be an issue.

I'm in a rural area - Actually, most of my region, even the most remote farmers, have natural gas service.

This would be a key service by me.

And I am in the Metro Atlanta area and most existing homes in my area, if they are on gas, are on propane. Only the new sub-divides get natural gas, as well as fiber installed..

Re: who will this help

??? Natural Gas is everywhere in Metro Atlanta. Not sure where your neighborhood is, but here in Dekalb and elsewhere ITP (Inside the perimeter) plus most of Gwinnett, Cobb, Clayton & North Fulton and for alot of the newer neighborhoods in Forsyth they are all connected AGL mains. My house was built in 1961, my Mom's in Decatur was built in 1948 and all have had NG since day 1. (My house did used to have a septic tank though) I haven't seen a propane tank within 15 miles of the perimeter for years, though I'm sure there are exceptions. (Wife used to work for Georgia Natural Gas.)

Then again, metro Atlanta does practically strech to Charlotte now.

As for fiber though, yeah - we're SOL on that in the pre-2000 neighborhoods.

I was saying that the people it would seem to help most as a "last-mile service" all have propane tanks because the gas company neve ran lines out their they just fill up large propane tanks and thats what people use no gas lines

Re: who will this help

It's the same with BPL. The sales pitch for BPL is that it'll offer "last
mile service" to rural folks who need broadband. Much of the info
I've read indicates it would be too costly to implement away from "town"

As for the BiG?? I wonder if marketing talked to any engineers about
this before publishing their press release?? heehee

I'm halfway tempted to call one of those phone numbers! heeee

Exactly since the shower head will be the MAC/DAC and all you have to do is hook up your PC to one of the holes in the shower head and turn on the shower and viola! you have BB through the shower.

Propagating radio waves in pipes.

Propagating radio waves in pipes is certainly a new twist on the idea of last-mile solutions, but it still requires more traditional hub-to-headend backhauls.

How to they handle propagation dampening, ghosting (harmonics), etc. between the point where its introduced and where its delivered. How are they handling isolation between households, or multiple accounts? How much energy is required to transmit upstream, from household to hub or headend? What happens during pressure flux? How dangerous would flowing NG inside of its pipe be toward generating static electric interference in the propagated transmission? What is the signal loss function--it is linear distance, non-linear distance on a tree, etc.?

This 'might' be of use to city owned and operated NG infrastructures and benefit them in knowing they will not have to dig up too much of the ROW (right of way). Still, though, its of limited market reach since (as someone already pointed out) not everyone lives in a NG-equipped neighborhood.

Re: Huh?

Actually, that phrase tells us a bit.

Since gas companies NEVER want amateurs making gas connections, the connection at the user end must just be some sort of alligator clip type thing--i.e., no cable or fiber blown through the line. So apparently the pipe's the thing.

If you thought that it takes too much power to drive an RF IP signal over power lines, wait till you see how much power it takes to drive an RF IP signal through a pipe which is GROUNDED for it's entire length.

How does it work?

The pipes are used as a waveguide I presume so no interference from the outside. What about attenuation and dispersion from the multiple bends on the pipe? How many households can truly be served with one transceiver?

I'd better seek some advice from my EMF professor before getting too excited

Most new gas pipelines...
