Cable companies wage TV war
(old news - 10:04AM Thursday Apr 28 2005)
tags: competition
As we mentioned yesterday, SBC is complaining because Comcast and Time Warner Cable won't run ads designed to drum up support for telco deregulation in Texas. One state resident informs us the cable companies are running local ads slamming SBC for supporting legislation that would allow them to "cherry pick" affluent neighborhoods for network upgrade and IPTV installs (more information at the Dallas Morning News). Greater motivation for SBC to get their U-Verse IPTV system operational? Or should cable companies be forced to run telco political ads?

TWC and Concast, just take the money!

I think they should run the ads, since SBC will never actually get the IPTV deployed beyond gated communities.

Re: TWC and Concast, just take the money!

First Time Warner and Comcast are Competitive LECs not Incumbent LECs.

Second SBC wants to over turn the public good part of the Telecom act so they don't have to install anything beyond copper in areas that they deem economically unfit.

Three by doing this they can charge the customers and telcos in those areas more fees because they will say that is cost them more money to service those areas.

Four SBC and the other Regional Bells have been lobbying in the telco world that there is competition and the FCC should let them buy their biggest competitors MCI and AT&T to compete with the Cable companies. The limiting factor in that argument is that a Cable operator dose not have a contiguous network like the Telcos by the nature of the cable business. Time Warner by far has the biggest Telco network of all of the Cable companies but not like other of like sized Telcos.

And lastly, any thing that a RBOC wants for the telco world is in their best interest and not of the consumer or competition. Let see.....SBC buying AT&T who had the best telco legal team that helped competitive LECs to get a foot in the door the second best legal team was MCI's. RBOC have charged CLECs from 100% markup for collocation power to hiring mathematicians to create a operations cost models that only mathematicians can understand after one year of analyzing the data and then it is still a mystery why they charge what they charge.

Since when was Cable supposed to support Telco?

Why should a Cable company drum up support for telco deregulation? I don't understand why SBC are complaining... it's not like Comcast and TWC are telco companies.
If SBC want to drum up support for it, then they should do it.

Comcast and TWC offer telephone service (in selected markets), why shouldn't they be considered telcos.

Payback

I think SBC should disconnect Time Warner and Comcast's phones.

Probably wasn't comcast running the ad, probably was a local station ad only (especially since it was on a network/non-cable channel).

Ad spots are divided between cable provider and the content provider (station/network). If the slot belongs to content provider SBC can have its ad inserted into that spot. This is the same way Satellite TV gets its ads on your TV.

Forced ads?

When is a cable company (or any media outlet for that matter) forced to run any ads? Welcome to our free market society - companies can choose to take ads if they want to.

The only thing broadcast companies are forced to air are PSAs (Public Service Announcements), but even then the airtime required is very minimal. Most air them at the very start and end of the broadcast day.

Conflict of interest

To be honest if SBC is paying for open add space Comcast should be playing the ads. The advertising segment of the cable companies should be separate from the political side. I see satellite service ads all the time on cable channels. That's definitely giving the competition ad space. What makes this different?

This is the sort of thing that screams of censorship. If they decide not to run ads because it's against their agenda what is going to stop them from doing things like not running ads for politicians they don't agree with? No ads for other companies they compete with (directly or indirectly)? No ads for movies they don't like?

Re: Conflict of interest

The difference is, they're required to run ads by political candidates. But they can sell they're ad space to whomever they please. Most satelite ads you see are probably run by local channels or network ad space, which, as a previous poster mentioned is still available to SBC.

I'll tell you what makes it different. It's the current "Hot button topic" of contention between the cableco's and the telco's. It's the same thing as why one older brother teases a younger brother over something totally insignificant. ;>

That's ironic!

Funny how SBC promotes the dish as a superior TV solution yet wants to advertise on Comcast.

And maybe if SBC actually deployed IPTV beyond gated communities, they could promote their agenda to a larger audience.
