Will offer 'naked DSL' in Northeast
(old news - 03:04PM Monday Apr 18 2005)
tags: dsl
Responding to our Broadband Industry Gripe #2 (we wish), Verizon today announced they are now offering "naked DSL" service (DSL without mandatory local service) to existing customers in the Northeast. CBS/Marketwatch indicates Northeast customers (ex-NYNEX and Bell Atlantic) can cut or switch their local service with no penalty, starting today.

The company insists the move will be national in time, but gave no timeline for when true naked DSL would be available elsewhere. Verizon had promised this in May of last year, but then seemingly backtracked.

Great now if SBC would follow suite I may just consider buying one of those load balancing routers and having a second DSL only line installed.

I've heard of addictions to this and that, But It's the first time I've ever heard of money being addictive, But Verizon must feel they can stand It, Maybe the NE is a big experiment? So who knows, Maybe Verizon will let everyone who want to drop their voice service and keep their DSL, Me I have DSL, But I'll keep mine as I don't have any VoIP type equipment nor a cell phone yet. Besides It's cheaper for Me as My combined Phone and DSL bill rarely exceeds $50.00 per month, Last month It was $44.66.

All well and good but maybe they should concentrate on keeping their name servers for Boston, Cambridge and Somerville working. Everyone I know has had to switch to Speakeasy since the Verizon DNS servers time-out 75% of the time.

When did this start for you? I live in Concord, NH and this started a few weeks ago for me.

Why would Verizon not fix this? Have enough people complained?

Rickhal

@12.25.x.x

I have had Verizon DSL for about a year or so now. Up until lately, I haven't had any complaints about the service but lately it seems internet lookups are very slow. I suspected some DNS issue as sites that used to load very quickly are now taking a loooonnnnnggggggg time to load. Like Boston.com for instance. I notice as the home page tries to load that in the status bar, many site addresses which are not related to Boston.com come and go. Then, finally the page loads. Since I have made no changes and my system has plenty of RAM and the cache is clean, I know it is an issue with Verizon's network. What is "Speakeasy"? And, how do I make use of it?

shocking

I am absolutely surprised by this. This came out of nowhere. I didn't think Verizon would do this without federal regulation.

Verizon seems to be full of surprises lately. First FiOS and now Naked DSL.

Kudos to them!

Since it basically says "no penalty" I have to guess it's the same price whether you have phone service or not.

The no-dialtone surcharge will be approximately 39.95 plus regulatory fees and taxes.

How to do Naked today for $40 box. (I DO IT TODAY) Downgrade your existing line to Basic: $12/month... add DSL: $29.95. How Naked can they go? It's the same old BS -- No Price Savings!

My post was in jest. I sarcastically meant that you would end up paying MORE for a naked line then if you just has basic service. In theory, naked DSL will come with little or no surcharge. Covad et al already do this for an additional $5 per month which likely pays for the copper infrastructure between you and the CO. Your $12/month basic phone service is NOT naked DSL. It's just was the minimum you could get away with.

I doubt that. Landlines prices include the cost of maintaining the infrastructure. DSL doesn't cover this. I expect a 5-10 dollar increase over the 29.95.

The price?

Speakeasy runs naked 1.5/256 for approx $64.95 in Cleveland. I wager it'll be around that price range.

I hope not. I'm paying about 70.00 each month (phone + verizon). The whole idea behind naked dsl, was so I could get VoIp. Also price was a very big key to why I wanted naked DSL. 29.95 / 39.95 is good for dsl naked. Just because I do not op for one service, shouldn't mean I have to pay more.

If this is the case, I may have found the first thing I could disagree and not like about Verizon.

I'm sure there will be a premium but I doubt that high. More than likely $10 to $15 making the total around $39 or $44.

YES

edit: But you'd have to port over your home number first, before canceling your home phone service. If don't do it in this order, you'll lose your number.

I further wonder about other 3rd party companies. I use Cloud9 and I would love to get rid of my Verizon $55/month for next to nothing and move onto another VoIP for my office. Maybe I should just call up Cloud9 and ask them...

Hmmmmmmmm.........

I have always wondered if some enterprising telco offered this and decent speeds and a fair price, and spelled out their TOS so everyone could understand, installs in a timely manner, they would/could kill the competition....wait got to put that crack pipe away....

Please provide which Bellsouth.com published statement said this? I'm not saying this hasn't been said, but I actually do not remember reading a published document (article).

Also, there was a technical limitation, but that has gone.

I'd really like to see this out west too. It might even be enough incentive to pick up verizon wireless as my cell provider too to offset their high wireless prices.

So when can one sign up online?

Just for shits and giggles I tried signing up, but their site still says you need their dial tone service to get DSL.

Or you have to call in to order?

Qwest

Qwest has offered naked DSL for sometime now their reasoning is better a naked DSL customer then no customer at all.

Oh and to save time so you Qwest haters out there so you don't have to post your repetitive carping here you go:;)

Qwest doesn't take interleaving off their DSL lines. I'll keep my 3mbit/768 @ $29/month and 13ms pings thank you very much!

Look out Comcast!

I'm no Verizon fan (actually, I think they're the devil, LOL) but if they offer naked DSL for $30/MO I may have to jump all over that. Comcast is REALLY getting on my nerves with their price increases. I would just as soon have direct TV and DSL, and save, oh, $25/mo. or so to get more channels I want to see.

If (and that's a large IF) this is as good as it sounds, Verizon may have a winner on it's hands.

I heard it is possible to have 2 phone numbers for the same physical cell phone. Is that possible? If so can I port my home phone number to my cell phone while keeping my current cell phone? This is verizon wireless of course.

Jealous

Say what you will, but from an outsider's viewpoint it sure looks like Verizon is making all the right moves of late. First FIOS, and now this. Given SBC's generally arrogant, non-responsive attitude and comparatively dismal plans for the future, Verizon looks like heaven to me
