Will deploy some fiber - in developments
(old news - 10:46AM Tuesday Apr 12 2005)
tags: Fiber
Qwest has announced they have begun rolling out fiber to the home in Lone Tree, Colorado; the first such effort by the company. Qwest says it will be focusing fiber efforts on so called "green field" deployments, or new housing developments.

The Denver Post indicates that while data speeds of up to 40Mbps are possible, the service will start off capped at 1.5mbps (completely defeating the purpose of all that glorious fiber). The deployment is considerably less aggressive than the moves being made by Verizon (fiber) and SBC (VDSL).

Riding that light will also be Qwest Choice TV, an all digital television service featuring more than 200 channels. Qwest has some experience in the IPTV market, offering TV via VDSL to customers in both Colorado and Arizona. They ultimately decided VDSL was too expensive for broader deployment.

Unlike the problems we've seen in some housing developments where customers are locked into one ISP for all of their services, Qwest says that while customers must use Qwest as an ISP, they're free to sign up with other phone or cable providers if available.

"Fiber to the home is for demands of the future: Download music or enjoy streaming video, watch HDTV programming and be ready to take advantage of the applications of tomorrow," pitches Jim Vogel, Qwest's vice president of sales.

If fiber is the future, shouldn't Qwest be looking at broader (brown-field) deployment?

Re: oh great....

Does it really matter that your PIPE to the household for Internet service is 1.5 Mbps when the aggregate PIPE of the local community is oversubscribed as hell. I hear some of the Internet connections that aggregate local community traffic can be oversubscribed as much 100/1.

Plain and simple, what most people don't realize is that residential service, whether it be delivered via Ethernet, Coax, Fiber, etc. has no quality of service and no service level agreements. Thus the 1.5 Mbps. Its the other applications like IPTV which will take advantage of the Fiber...for now.

"Qwest Sees the Light", more like "Qwest Sees the Profits" from getting newbies to sign onto capped fiber for (presumably) good deals of money.

Re: Let Me Guess

I guarantee they do. Lone Tree is an affluent effluent suburb south of Denver, with lots of new construction. Qwest offers video service in neighboring Highlands Ranch, one of the only places in the country as far as I know (with very limited knowledge).

I was all excited when I saw this until I saw the 1.5meg cap. Why would I switch off of my 4meg cable for this?

You can also get Qwest VDSL in some parts of AZ too.

Because it's fiber! Yahoo fiber. It's uhm... fiber.

Yep on the whole, a big "Who cares?" goes out to Qwest on this one. Heck they even have faster DSL offerings...

Too little too late?

Based upon past performance (and personal experience), I think "Qwest: Ride the Lite" is a more appropriate marketing tag line.

Lacking

To put it simply:
"That is SOOOOOO last century!"

They can easily offer 15-30 mb/s and they cap it at minimal DSL speeds? Talk about greedy...

Anyone know the price for this? If you say anything over $20, Im ganna start laughing unconrollably!

Re: Lacking

I really don't get it either. 3Mbps DSL is $30 a month around here, so 1.5mpbs would actually be a major step backwards. Silly.

Unfortunately you are far more likely to see 20MB from Comcast. (If history is any kind of indicator.)

where it makes "sense"

And check out this statement from Qwest's press release:

"Qwest has determined that where it makes sense for the company, such as in certain new developments where green field conditions exist, Qwest will deploy FTTH technology, which enables Qwest to be well prepared to serve customers' current and future broadband needs."

So there you have it. Where it makes "sense" for Qwest (i.e. they can make the most money), they will deploy FTTH. If your home, or neighborhood, or city don't make "sense" for Qwest, tough. You'll be left off the information superhighway, and you will not fully participate in the global economy.

WTF!?!?!? Lone Tree????

Come on Qwest, wanna make a TON of new customers? Get it to prime areas, not these lil pockets of uber rich areas for god's sake! Lone Tree......go figure. Medium income is prolly close to a million there.
1.5? Bwahahahahhaha! Ummmm Qwest, is it any wonder why MCI ran so fast away from you? HEAR you customers and your competition! 1.5 is a joke on FTTH.

Re: WTF!?!?!? Lone Tree????

I agree, living in Littleton as well, who the hell cares about Lone Tree? You would have better results with a slightly larger town. Oh, and 1.5mb? WTF does that do for people getting 4mb from Comcast? If the Lone Tree people are rich, they won't care about cost savings vs. speed. I don't see the light at all.

Re: WTF!?!?!? Lone Tree????

As someone who sold cable for AT&T Broadband back in the hayday when they were first rebuilding areas here in Denver, I can tell you from personal experience that you always hit the new build first. Couple of reasons:

1. Get your service in the door before the competition
2. Get your service in the door before the competition

If they can get their fiber down before Comcast does, and get all the customers signed up with video, telephony, and data before Comcast does, they are in the drivers seat. People who have bundled services at a reasonable price are difficult to switch. Lone Tree is also one of the fastest growing areas of metro Denver, with one of the highest median incomes. Why would they market this service to Littleton (mostly middle income) or Aurora (mostly lower-middle income)?

The people who live in Lone Tree mostly work in the DTC, and one of the things they ask when buying a house is "What sort of internet service can I get here?" When the answer is "fiber to the door" their eyes light up.

You're wrong about getting a TON of new customers in the larger middle class areas. These people already have service of some sort, and all of the customers you would get (especially with a 1.5meg cap) would be churn.

Re: WTF!?!?!? Lone Tree????

Who in the world has their eyes light up at "fiber to the door" that also thinks a 1.5 cap on FTTH is reasonable? I don't get it.
I'd rather keep my 3.0 DSL for $30 rather than bundled 1.5 capped FTTH at any price (except perhaps free, but I'd still keep the DSL).

True, but the real estate agent isn't going to tell them that. If you told me I could get fiber, I'd be stoked. Until I found out about the cap, that is.

Quest wants to be bought by Verizon

If they did a vdsl deployment then Verizon might just pass them over when they're done buying MCI. The proof would definately be in the pudding if we could find out how they build out the fiber.

Qwest has plenty of fiber in place now, although it will cost them pretty penny to turn up as, they are going to need plenty of repeaters and power out in the middle of nowhere (14 BIG states).

Whats this brown stuff on my shoe

QWERST could'nt light fibre... they don't have a clue they could not find their a**holes with both hands and a friggin funnel.
By the time they deploy something some indie beat them to it.
I knew people that where smart and intelligent then they went to work for QWERST and got hit with the stupid door, and the rude and arrogant door.
I would not hold my breath they are a bunch of low life dirt bags.

Re: hmmm

What's the point in deploying Fiber if they are going to treat it just like their DSL? 1.5/896? Sure you could get TV Service but isn't everyone trying to do that over DSL as well?

I would be happy to switch to any of their data services if they change that download speed and keep the prices low!
My current $40.95 for 3/256 for cable is pretty pathetic also when compared to the rest of the nation.

Not Denver and etc...?

I would have loved to listen to the rationale of deploying fiber out in deer tick country vs denver and the surrounding areas. maybe a survey was done and they found that there are more computers in the projects eh I guess some people prefer the term housing communities. maybe they did a survey and found that the bill could be paid on-time more, save a few dollars on construction and deployment, maybe they seen this site and said oh my gawd!!!!!
maybe they have a deal with comcast to split mci if qwest doesn't mess with denver and surrounding areas, maybe it's because they are qwest. maybe the tea leaves...maybe the people there will be happy to have 1.5/down, maybe....

If you read the press release...

"Qwest high-speed Internet access at 1.5 megabits per second (Mbps) or they can upgrade to a higher speed service.

So it can go faster. The question is just how fast will they let you go. I'm guessing that they will cap it at around 8-10meg so they can use the rest of the bandwidth for HDTV. Just a guess.

There is NO real 1.5MB cap

The line isn't capped folks. Well, it's capped if you don't upgrade your default service plan for the community.

"homeowners at RidgeGate will automatically receive, at a reduced rate, Qwest high-speed Internet access at 1.5 megabits per second (Mbps) or they can upgrade to a higher speed service"

"With FTTH, data speeds of up to 40Mbps per homeowner are currently possible - approximately 10 times faster than today's average broadband speeds - allowing Qwest to easily introduce new data speeds in the future to meet RidgeGate residents' bandwidth needs as they evolve."
