(old news - 04:07PM Thursday Apr 07 2005)
tags: wireless
Philadelphia today officially took the wraps off their city-wide Wi-Fi plan, which will mount hotspots on utility poles, and offer residents connectivity at $16-$20 a month. Esme Vos over at MuniWireless has additional detail, and also offers an informative Q&A with Dianah Neff, Philly's Chief Information Officer. Those interested can also check out the city's business plan and the RFP (both pdf files) at the "Wireless Philadelphia" website.

So Much for Free

But hey I start a new job in Philly in a couple of weeks.
Kinda neat to have laptop access wherever I go in town.
Hmm. Guess I won't be needing a cell phone either.
$20/mo is a bargain.

Residents?

What does this mean to the large number of people who commute into Philly each day to work, from neighboring regions and states.

We've got to pay the crummy city wage tax to work here but I keep seeing "resident" referrenced in the Q&A and related articles.

Will non-resident visitors get to sign up or will you need a zip-code specific billing address?

Hopefully they're just saying resident service as a way to distinguish between the consumer and premium business products.

Fingers crosses...

Re: Residents?

I know this may sound crazy, but you can get a post office box with a Philly address and use it as a resident address.

Re: Residents?

I don't think anybody would have to worry about getting an address... I'm sure if you have a valid Credit Card, they will welcome you!!

The city wants to make money, if you are in the city wi-fi limit, then you are part of the city, even if it's just for a day.

Oh, I'm ugly. I don't hide that fact. As far as "backwater town trailer" parks go, I have a dubba wide. What of it?

Who will afford it?

Philly is the pits: who will afford it? Most of its population is poor and lack a college education and don't even own notebooks.

Re: Who will afford it?

First off I agree Philly is poor, but go there and say it to their face. Actually all cities have poor sections, like NYC, the poohole of the world, LA, watch out for gay bikers they'll kill ya. Even Boston has poor people, the fact is most city dwellers are poor. And the part about a College education, WHO NEEDS COLLEGE? I hate people who insult non-college educated people. Maybe some people can't afford it? Maybe some like me see no point in college, maybe if you're gonna be some type of scientist or shit. I myself probably couldn't handle college, because I have always had troubles with school, Does that make me stupid, God no. Just cause you have your fancy college diploma, doesnt make you any smarter than me or one of the Philly hooligans from the hood, "Dey aint ignant". And also, I used to own a notebook, until it got wet, then the papers got stuck together. The term Notebook, is the stupids term I have ever heard, a Notebook is a Fu*king book with lined PAPER. What ever happened to the term labtop? Also I'd rather have a Desktop PC. Dont belittle someone, you dont know em.

Re: Who will afford it?

You have a point -- but I am allowed: I was born and raised in Philadelphia and still live within the "Philadelphia" area.

My point is that Philly has been on a downward spiral [even the city has been very dirty as of late]. There are no good jobs in the area. If there are no jobs, who can afford to live if they can't afford computers? If they can't afford computers, then how can they afford internet access?

Getting a wireless connection then means absolutely nothing to the average Philadelphian. I am sure most would prefer something better and more meaningful as a city resident.

Re: Who will afford it?

Philly and the burbs are getting back on their feet.
The new tower for Comcast is a good start.
The Philly area was too heavily invested into the dot bomb thing but we are shaking it off.
I just landed a dream IT job in the city so there is work to be found.

We need a new Mayor who isn't so spend crazy.
Rendell did one hell of a job as Mayor and the city was doing just fine.
Philly is coming back.
Smack dab between NYC and DC and much more affordable.
We just need to do something about the Skookil Distressway.
This is one more knowledge is power issues.
I for one think it's fantastic for all the residents of Philadelphia.

Security Nightmare

It will be interesting to see how they handle (or not) the security issues with such a large, public, wireless deployment.

A couple interesting notes

1) The service will be symetrical 1mb/1mb.
2) This service will likely create new jobs, as tech support will be needed.
3) A 1/1 wireless connection? I wanna live in philly :P

Hope they have some savvy shapers to curb the p2per's or charge overages for heavy throughputers. BT users will be on this like moths to the flame.

philly is great

hey for 20 dollar a month I will sign up, its cheaper than cable and I think the speed is okay for the price.

Philadelphia jobs are not that bad, as long as one is in the science field.

Philly Wireless

1M/1M Service for $20/month is awesome... In most neighborhoods, you can't get more than 768/90 DSL due to CO Distance. Comcast is charging 45/55 for 4/384 and 6/768. I have the 6/768 and it's been great so far... Imagine only paying $20 and getting 1M/1M anywere you go in Philly? Also to those who say "Most people in Philly can't afford notebooks", think about Desktop PC's with Wireless Cards that the City will most likely pay part of with Local Business Contribution to get everyone online. I'm wondering how they will serve this access though? Will they use reserved MAC and provide Wireless Cards? Use some sort of Certificate, Proxy Login? I currently have 4 PC's at home and i'd like to keep them online... Will be interesting...
