Unveils new 500 minute VoIP tier
(old news - 03:35PM Wednesday Apr 06 2005)
tags: prices · VoIP
Verizon today announced a new $19.95 discount tier for their Voicewing VoIP service. The new tier features 500 minutes of talk time, and is apparently Verizon's response to VoIP users who complained their service was not competitively priced. Voicewing's launch was a quiet one; there has also been a distinct lack of marketing for the service - at least when compared to Verizon's attempt to publicize Fios, for instance.

$19.95 - No Marketing?

Shocking. Considering it's half the price of their POTS line.

Vonage is only $15 a month plus ~$1.50 taxes for 500 minutes.

Vonage also has the $24.99 plan w/o tax unless you live in NJ. This is for unlimited calls anywhere in the United States and Canada. »www.vonage.com/products_premium.···romo_id=
Much better deal than the Verizon $19.95 500 minute plan.

I have Vonage "Basic 500" service too; it rocks.

Now if VoiceWing's customer service is any better than Vonage's, it might actually be worth the extra $5 a month.

That plan proves that verizon is realizing the competition will be a problem and is coming kicking and screaming about lowering voice telephone service prices....

screw the discount

Lets get naked DSL and then Voicewing.... I do not see the point of a pots line charge, dsl charge, and a voicewing charge....

I am in an area where the cheapest pots line is 16.95 a month... that is with nothing on the line.... the dsl 29.99, and then if I want voicewing it would be an extra 19.95 a month... this is all before taxes....
so 67.00 before taxes for all 3.... nope make no sense to me!!!!!!!!

Re: screw the discount

I completely agree. The lowest plan I can get with VZ is $18 landline (with taxes) + $35 (with tax) + voip. So far I don't see a discounts. It's good for FIOS.

Paired with FiOS?

What about the $20 Voicewing plan paired with Verizon FiOS? Will this combination be eligible for a $5 discount on the FiOS service?

So for $55 per month

5000/2000 FiOS and 500 Voicewing minutes

Read the fine print...

For packages with unlimited calling, more than 5,000 minutes
a month is considered beyond normal residential use and may
be investigated, resulting in potential termination of service.

This is less than 3 hours per day.

Competitively priced???

Competitively priced??? How is that? I pay $20.50 or so and I get TWO VoIP lines with VoicePulse, 1 line has unlimited regional calling(90% of my state), and a total of 400 LD minutes.

Re: LOL but i wonder....

Why because we have meter rate lifeline which come out to 2.53 plus 40.45 for DSL and then 15.00 for VoicePulse. So say the grand total is 58.00 to make it even. We now get all the major calling features at www.voicepulse.com, unlimited regional, and 200 long distance. Please raise you hand if you would get all that from a 60.00 Verizon POTS?

Do they? I was under the impression its $30 a month and you don't need to have a Verizon phone line?

and the "fees" are.....

what are the fees on top of that $19.95? Vonage charges some sort of fee, $2-3, what's verizon gonna throw on there?

911 Service

Do you get better E911 service with Verizon's VOIP than with the others?

BroadVoice.com unlimited in-state $11.79/month

FWIW, for "unlimited" in-state, try:

$11.79/month total (incl. current fees, taxes, ...)

And, of course, that "line" can be in (more or less?) any state you want it to be.

Dunno' if they have a hidden maximum, like this Verizon VoIP 5,000 minutes per month limit that's apparently in the fine print.

kinda lame when packet8 offers unlimited for 20$

packet8 »www.packet8.com offers an unlimited package for 20$ so I guess verizon's service still isn't competitive.

Is this a POTS-;ess offering?

Somehow I doubt that Verizon broadband customers are being let out of the POTS requirement for their broadband so I do not understand why someone would buy into a VoIP from them in the first place.

Buy POTS to get broadband. Buy broadband to get VoIP. VoIP isn't needed since you have POTS.

No Real Savings for DSL Customers / Maybee

Here is some intresting news as you may already know DSL will increase the pricing to 37.95, if you are under contract or have a Verizon Freedom package of any kind you are going to get a 8.00 discount instead of your 5.00 discount. So you are still at 29.95.

Now if you went to Voicewing, and had the freedom plan you would loose your discount, I just called and confirmed that.
Therefore for those who are recieving the discount because they are part of the freedom plan, beware of switching to Voicewing.

Now in addition for those one bill customers who are getting 4.00 off or more or 10% off there wireless bill, cause they have a freedom plan. They would also loose that benefit.

Now you may say, that you can offset that benefit by going into a contract with Verizon for DSL, and for those people who have the contract with DSL, you may get a benefit, from voicewing.
But Voicewing also has taxes and surcharges that roughly add 8.00. so that 19.00 is going to be more like $26.00.

Again cell phone users know this already, that it pays to do all your long distance calling on the cell phone.

Now here is a sweet deal at you may not know this. As of this year Verizon changed there pricing structure of there cell phone plans. So if you have more than a year on your contract you can change your plan. Ill give you an example to help you out.
I pay 39.99 for my plan right now America Choice 400 they did away with that plan and now its American Chocie 450. my plan had about a year left to go. So for adding 2 days more to my contract i was able to add 50 minutes more per month for the remainder of my contract.
This is true of all of verizon's plans including family plan. You are allowed to extend you existing plan and take advantage of extra minutes now. It makes sence for you to call verizon to see if you qualify.

As far as Voicwing is concerned, be very specific to find out what discounts you would be loosing should you go to Voicewing. because in the end the discounts you loose, may make up the difference you gain.
Verizon is the most heavily packaged utility, and i would strongly suggest that you always package your discounts.
Also if you work for a large corperation, very often they have deals with Verizon Wireless that go up to around 19% discount. and that is on top of discounts that you are already recieving.

Hope that this helped someone.

bhorow,

Thanks for the very useful information. I need to look into my Verizon cell phone situation to see if it makes sense to move to the 450 minute plan. But I am curious as to the basis for your stating that the Voicewing $19.95 plan will include $8.00 in taxes. I know it varies from state to state, but can you say how you arrived at that number? Thanks.

Re: No Real Savings for DSL Customers / Maybee

I spoke with Verizon and they gave me the estimate. In New York it would be about $8.00-$10.00. If you call you can get them to tell you. I'll tell you one thing its not 1.00.
Lets face it no matter what service you have they all will require e911 and other charges. Cable in my state charges about the same taxes. No one is exempt from taxes and surcharges. If it doesn't happen now it will happen soon enough for everyone.

My whole message came out of a long conversation with Verizon where i talked with covered about everything verizon sells.

Re: No Real Savings for DSL Customers / Maybee

Thanks. I was thinking of calling Verizon to ask about taxes but know from experience (with ATT CallVantage) that they do not readily provide that information. I'm thinking of switching from CallVantage's $29.99 plan to Voicewing's $19.99 plan. I'm pretty sure we don't use more than 500 minutes outbound in the typical month so it seems like a better deal for us. I was hoping the taxes would be less (I pay almost $8 in taxes for CallVAntage here in Virginia), but I guess no such luck. Thanks again for the info.
