Tom's Networking compares and contrasts the various VoIP services on the market, and comes away most impressed by Packet8: "There's no doubt in my mind. Of the services I've used, Packet 8 is by far the best VoIP provider out there." Our users share their thoughts on the provider.

Re: Bla Bla Bla

Under what condition would you have trusted a stated conclusion by someone? Does it auto-invalidate users using the service, or just Tom (a user) using the service?

Where did you see that?

I didn't see a column in his "Summary Table & Conclusions" for Slipped me a little cash on the side?

What ripn is referring to is that in the past, Tom has taken some serious heat for biased reviews. Example: if 3dfx (yes, that long ago) would score a FEW points higher than NVIDIA, Tom would say stuff like "3dfx CRUSHED the NVIDIA"....if NVIDIA would score that same difference higher than 3dfx, he would say "NVIDIA barely edged out 3dfx". He's done this type of stuff in CPU reviews as well. Do some research and you'll see that I speak the truth.

skeptical

Its really biased to nominate one single 'best VOIP' provider as every individual has a unique experience. I've have Vonage for 3 months now without a single problem. Thats not to say that I nominate them for 'best VOIP' provider but its like constant sparring here of whats better: DSL or Cable or which ISP is better BellSouth or Time Warner. People make valid points, but its hard to generalize who is better when there are many factors to take into consideration.

example- Joe Blow signs up for Packet 8, has a horrible experience and it doesn't work well and disconnects a month later. And to find out that the problem was stemming from a signal/noise ratio problem with his actual cable connection- Right there Mr. Blow assumed that it was Packet 8 who the problem was and the common consumer would also think this. Until these reviews & comparisons take place in a strictly controlled environment, take them with a grain of salt.

I would think they would want to review the quality of the calls and service. This review seems to be only cencerned with the bundled equipment. I have Vonage and I love it. No problems.

@swbell.ne

Article title should have read....

"Best of the limited number of providers that I reviewed and leaving out providers that other polls have rated far better than Packet8"

What I hate is that so many people just do a Google and come up with these "supposedly all inclusive" biased articles as complete "market research".

Still happy with Voicepulse after 4 months.

Tom obviously never has called P8 cust. service!

If he had, P8 would have been the LOWEST rated service!

n/a

I am not sure what is the big fuss about VOIP. is nothing special. Frankly I really do not like it over the real POTS. I am not a pro telephone companies or anything like that. If you guys were too look to some small companie for all this you could get around for the same price.

Re: n/a

What small company (I assume you're referring to a CLEC) is going to give customers unlimited calling to anywhere in the United States for ~$25 a month? But I will agree with you that VoIP isn't for everyone, and to be honest, until the industry has had time to mature, there probably are many people who should stick with traditional wireline phone companies. And that goes double for the people who cannot understand or accept that right now, 911 does not work on VoIP in the same way it does on landline phones, and may not work at all with some providers.

On the other hand, for people who are fine will cell phone quality calls, I think they will find that most VoIP is better than that. If a person knows how to set up his own home network (or has a close friend/family member with that level of knowledge), and can take personal responsibility for finding another way to connect to emergency services, then he is definitely a candidate for VoIP.

As for the review, all I will say about that is that if Tom had bothered to spend any time in the »VOIP Tech Chat forum, he might have come away with a slightly different view of Packet8. Or if he ever really uses a large number of minutes in a single month, and gets a message saying he must upgrade to a business-grade service (because, according to some posters, when P8 says "unlimited" in their advertising they may not really mean it), he might have a different opinion. Everyone's needs are different but from what I have read in the »VOIP Tech Chat forum, it seems that VoicePulse gets about the highest satisfaction rating, whereas P8 seems to generate a higher number of negative comments than most, but that's just the sense I get from reading the forum, not an actual count of positive vs. negative messages.

Tom's Garbage

Tom's Garbage? There are people still read that corrupt marketing bulletin board crap?

I thought nobody reads them after they completely lost their credibility over their outrageous faked Nvidia and Intel reviews, against every other site...

...good ol' Thomas 'DeepPocket' 'Hallucinematic' Pabst... does he still snore that stuff?

Packet8, to put it nicely, sucks

I have had Packet8 and Vonage service and I can tell you first hand that Packet8 SUCKS. In fact, it's amazing that one company can be so consistently bad at everything they do. Their ATA had a cheap low end feel, the call quality is marginal, their network is horibly unstable, and their billing and customer service systems are just awfull.

There are only a FEW companies I really, really, dislike, and Packet8 is one of them.

Re: Packet8, to put it nicely, sucks

Their customer service may suck, but any quality problems are 90% of the time on your/ISPs end. Dont slam packet8 for your problems.

Exactly. P8 simply works here, though still as a secondary line (LNP just initiated...)

VoIP Shakeout is coming

Vonage VoIP is working fine for me. And, unless they make a complete screwup, it looks like they will be the one standing when the dust clears.

Does anyone remember the DSL debacles in 2000 and 2001? I had a great Northpoint IDSL line in a part of town no one else would service. Unfortunately, it only lasted six months and Northpoint went under. Later I got another IDSL and until about a year ago, the provider was Covad via AT&T. Any others providing DSL, other than Verizon? Of course, now I'm on Comcast. Just had to feed my need for speed.

There are lots of little VoIP companies out there, but, only one or two will survive. I just hope the pols don't tax it out of existence.

Where's BroadVoice.com and others?

Where's the other (little?) guys?

»www.BroadVoice.com , for example?

$11.79 / month, unlimited in-state calling.

Works for me.

Re: Where's BroadVoice.com and others?

My only thing about them is rate centers. They have ONE area code for South Carolina.

If they added as many rate centers as packet8 has, they would be great competition.

A unlimited instate plan on P8 would be intresting...
