Web browser found
(old news - 10:57AM Sunday Mar 27 2005)
The Sony PSP (competitor to gameboy, with extra features) comes with WiFi connectivity built in. But no web browser. There has been much speculation as to whether or not Sony plan to bless the sleek device with wireless internet capabilities. Well, wonder no more. It is at least possible: a mere day after the PSP release, a gamer managed to trick the PSP and a launch title into surfing slashdot: See www.fumanchuu.com.

Very cool.

I thought you would need a FW upgrade and this USB keyboard to get on the web. So this is great news.

Sony PSP Browser found on my unit.

Here is a few photos I took with my digital camera of my PSP. One shows me on the Sony web site. The other show the option on the menu.

This is cool, but it looks like alot of work to set up your own dns bindings and such to make it go where you want.

yeah it is totally useless, but I thought it was at least interesting to see a website on the screen. I guess they or someone will release a decent internet suite on it sooner or later. Perhaps one that can be stored on the memory stick instead of a UMD.

Re: cool

Ok, but no one's hacked it so we can share the latest and greatest $50 games over the internet, bummer at $300 what a ripoff.

why

don't they just include a web browser... what are they afraid of?

Re: why

Perhaps of having the damn thing hacked to the back of beyond, but if they were that concerned, it wouldn't accept a memory stick.

My Axim X30 has one as well, and an assortment of free 3rd party browsers.

I've been using it at hotspots for almost a year now.

Well it's a no-brainer why it has a memory stick. But it's not like they can honestly believe it won't be hacked. Hell I wouldn't buy a game system that couldn't be hacked... who the hell wants to pay 50$ a pop for games?

Re: why

So you'll only buy a game system where you can pirate games on it? That's pretty lame.

$50 hmmm I don't know, But If the Games were good enough challenging, Yet not impossible to play by non 10 year olds and cost $30 to $40, A web browser should be included though, as It seems like natural fit.

Of course It's the Dollar sign in front of the Amount and not to right of the Amount, Only the Cent sign goes to the Right of the Amount.

Maybe they didn't have time to test and implement it. Apparently they really rushed a lot of units to the US, and consequently a lot of defects have been revealed (dead pixels etc).

Why?

I have absolutely no interest in gadgets like this one. Why people buy them is beyond me.
Kids buying them, I can understand that but young adults and older people I really can't. Considering it's price tag I don't think Sony is targeting kids.

yeah really it only costs 2x as much as a freaking xbox!
this is probally just sonys way of getting in on the portable market, and/or something to make money before the ps3 comes out
lcd screens might be cool, and black plastic might be also but i cant justify $300 for plastic! it better make movies, take pictures, pick up tv stations, and start your car remotely before i would even consider it for that much

Re: Why?

uhm hey kid, get an appreciation in technology. miniaturization is the most expensive aspect of the computer industry, and even if you don't have the cognitive capacity to appreciate this new technology, its products like this that are the forerunners to the future products like the one you described. and $250? not that much. $50k for a Hummer 2? a $150k salary out of my tax dollars a month for ex-senators(for the rest of their life)... now that's a lot. Xbox is okay, but every system has their faults. the PSP is just now emerging and that's what everyone needs to remember; i think hackers will make a web browser and more regardless of wether or not Sony or any other company releases one. naive

Re: Why?

When it comes to LCD/CRT monitors bigger is always better. I can't enjoy a game if I can't relax in my recliner and play.
I don't need a portable gaming system.
But I guess that's just me.

Also paying $49 a game for that is a major rip off.

Now if you can waste $250 because you think it's something worth showing off you...

...should send me some money

Re: Why?

haha thats how i think too..you either like portables or you dont and i think kids like that more i dont exactly ride a bus anymore so i dont know where i would even play it.. at home? id rather play on my xbox with a full screen, game pad, recliner
and besides i think $50 for any system is a rip off but you got to bite the bullet sometimes i guess
it takes like 2 years to make a xbox, ps2 game. those games for that should take like 5 months i cant see $50 for those games either, no thanks!
maybe he can justify spending $600 on a video card, $450 on a CPU, or $67 on a CPU cooler

Nvidia= Junk, Get a Radeon x800, I can't really say that cause my computer is aging and its almost time to get a new one, I'll wait for the pentium D, also I hate portables, I'd rather sit a at home and paly games, or have a Xbox LAN party with my friends. Hand helds just arent for me, I'd play my Xbox on my 27" HDTV.

Re: Regarding FireTeam Charlie

PSPs arent meant to be used while sitting at home, thats what xboxes/ps2s/computers are used for.

I only use my handhelds on long car/plane trips, and where i can benefit from having the thing able to fit in my pocket.

Some people just buy them to play them at home; I dont really understand the point behind that.

Get the PSP!

I purchased the PSP and i'm 21 years old. There is PLENTY of use for a system like this (MP3 Player, Image Viewer, Movie (UMD) player & Video Games).

For those who travel alot it's the prefect companion for long flights/drives(when ur not driving of course).

PSP...

Well , this certainly looks interesting. I would play NHL Games if EA developed them. The one by Sony looks neat.

Maybe christmas time eh?

Being that I am 25 and disabled , the state doesnt pay me much to live off of , but I can save a little money here and there and theres always relatives who dissapoint you by buying you clothes instead of what you want LOL

@croy.blu

psp web browser

HA you lot are so gullable, if any of u payed more than jast alil bit of attention to those pic's of the sopposedly web browser, you would have notaced 3 things that give it awaya that they are just photo shop edited pics.

1. the heading off pspe web browser is in diffrent font style and in a diffrent colour.

2. A questionmark for an application sony would have come up with some swanky logo.

3. and the image of the person browsing the sony web site is all out of shape and the images have been squashed if sony had a psp browser it would resize images ( that psp looks a bit squat lol )

the only way to drows on the psp is to sent your primary DNS settings on ur wireless lan network setting to an external web page either one you have created or set it to 67.171.70.72

OR follow my guide by -=silent=-

1. Goto Settings ---> Network Settings ---> Infrastructure Mode ---> New Connection (you want to make a new connection so you can still use your default connection for regulare game use).

2. Create a new connection and after you've set the SSID and WEP (if you use it) in Address Settings goto Custom --->Manual.

Now set your IP address for your PSP to auromatic. Leave the Subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Set the Default Router to your router's IP address (I have a Linksys and mine 192.168.1.1, check your manual). Set the Primary DNS to 67.171.70.72 (this is what will let you get onling browsing).

3. Set Proxy Server as Do Not Use if you are not using one.

4. Confirm the setting list and Save the settings.

5. Put in Wipeout Pure and go to the Downloads section. When it asks what connection to use select the connection you just set up and viola, your online!

You can navigate the pages using the D-pad and select links with the X button. You can also enter text into text boxes by highlighting the box and pressing X. Square = refresh, shoulder buttons go back/forward through the pages.
