100Mbps data transfers
(old news - 11:33AM Friday Mar 25 2005)
tags: Fiber · world
The Electronic Times Internet reports that KT, the largest communication carrier in Korea, plans to launch the fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service next month via wavelength division multiplexing-passive optical networks (WDM-PONs), the first commercial FTTH service in the world. ETI sources indicate that KT could kick off WDM-PON-based FTTH service to individual subscribers as early as next month which would allows users to exchange mobile multimedia data in real time at a speed of 100Mbps, both for upstream and downstream.

My Lord

While I know we are a huge Country and it is more expensive to wire us with such speeds, we are rapidly falling behind Countries in terms of Broadband. For the Love of all that is Holy Sweeden makes us look like a third world Country when it comes to access to the internet. Its some what discouraging.

So, no, Sweden is not more populated than the US. Korea, yes.

Sweden decided not to make the illegals illegal, they are just aliens and they/we (still a Swede though living in Texas) have a large muslim population by now. Sweden's third largest city, Malmö, has I think 25% muslims. In other words immigrants from muslim areas of Europe and Middle East and Africa and Asia.

Would you like whites to move to Kuwait and make up 25-50% of Kuwait Cities population?

I don't care what anyone says but Sweden is a white country with white culture.... It's wrong that those ultra liberals think it's "alright" to allow POLAR OPPOSITE cultures into a country ILLEGALLY and then ENCOURAGE it....

Every ethnic group on this planet has a place to call home, but when it comes to being "white" you have to give up your land to other cultures illegally.

Actually, I do know.....

Did you see how one culture is being wiped off the map and a much more dominant (and radically different) culture is taking over? It's not right when a government allows the wiping out of a people's culture that has been around for thousands of years just so that some minority-turn-majority can come illegally and wipe out of the native people....

As for this doing with broadband? Well, we're talking about POPULATION dealing with BROADBAND.... It has become apparent that SMALL populations with MIDDLE - CLASS people will spawn FTTH. When you have LARGE populations of POOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS and RADICALLY DIFFERENT PEOPLE who WON'T buy into modern western technology.

Countries like Japan, Sweden etc are nice currently because the immigrants are confined to the cities. When they start coming into the villages, that will be the day when that country goes to shit.

There was a time not that long ago when your ancestors came here as a minority and participated in or at least gained from a government program that wiped out a people's culture that had been around for thousands of years.

Are you on crack? Have you ever read a history book? You DO realize where the Cradle of Life / Fertile Crescent is, right? It's between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Pull out a map and be pleasantly surprised. I think they were on earth a little longer than white people were. And if you're talking about illegal mexicans immigrants, then I'd like to happily point out that they originally came from Spain - only a few hundred miles from Great Britain and Germany - where most white North Americans can trace their ancestry from. They're part of the same "culture that has been around thousands of years". As far as that goes, I'd like to know which "culture" you're talking about. Not a single European culture (save the italians) has even existed for more than 2000 years - the only europeans before that were what you'd call uncivilized - the saxons, norse, anglos, barbarians, etc.. - far from something i'd call cultured.

"Countries like Japan, Sweden etc are nice currently because the immigrants are confined to the cities." What in the hell does that have to do with anything? Last I checked, most immigrants go to the cities anyways. They don't move out to the 'burbs. Of course, i'm from Texas, what do I know about immigrants. Anyways, can you please provide a shred of reason as to why the location of immigrants matters? I can tell you right now though, it doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is profits - and judging by the people i've met, it doesn't matter what your income is - broadband is getting higher and higher on the to-get list for everyone of every race and every age.

That's a good argument maybe for someone in montana.....

but

where i live (nj) it's 1,134 people per square mile.

in nyc it's 25,925 people per square mile.

all of this is according to the 2000 census which.

I wouldnt be surprised if those figures have doubled.

I look out my window and i dont see land I see other buildings. I live in a town where a small one family house costs about $700,000 and it's not a 'rich town'. There's no land or houses available at a reasonable rate because of the population density being so high and so many people want to move here.

where's my 100mbps fiber? It should have been here years ago.

I'm still trying to figure out how fiber will enhance my life and raise my standard of living-- if I were to get it.

Still can't think of any reason to justify trenching up my front yard for fiber.

Verizon FiOS - FTTH / PONs ?

From what I've heard / seen, the new fiber optic system Verizon is building out is exactly that type of system.

Of course, they're not, initially, talking about 100Mbps.
(5 M / 2 M lower tier; 30 M / 5 M upper tier, initially)

But I suspect this is likely all the same technology?
AFAIK, the new Verizon system is WDM/PONs.

Different approach to networks

Asian contries, aside from only having limited providers, treat BB networks as LAN's instead of WAN's. Here in the US, when networks are built, they build them to have access to services offered by other providers.

Over there, the ISP has all the services anyone would (readily) want on their own network. To provide access to those services, they build huge LAN's to interconnect them. Any time you need something that's not on that network, that's when you hit the "Internet."

When we see 100mbps Internet service, they really don't have that, they simply have 100mbps access to most services with shared 20mbps service to the rest of the world (which isn't anything to sneeze at either!)

It's actually a great model.

GAH!

ok i know all about the smaller countries have it easier.

They are smaller, have less money

we are bigger and have more money

If some frikkin coalition of companies helped by the government would get on the ball we'd have decent internet access. I mean come on! Where I use to live (right off Interstate 95 in south florida) where theres new communities that are 0 lot line (unbelievable amounts of homes per square mile) they dont qualify for DSL or Cable Internet. It's ridiculous.

Still need to work on the quantum entanglement for communications. Let's face it, even using light to communicate from the Earth to say... Mars, the ping times would be "astronomical".

Believe it or not, there are those of us who think about these things daily, and are tired of the way this country is falling behind in science and technology, compared to other countries.

Lets face it, its all about getting the most money out of us for the least amount of work. So who really runs those big companies that do DSL and Cable maybe its some Euro after all we seem to sell our own kids if their was a market for it.

You guys got it all wrong!

All we need in this country is the bible. Who needs fiber!?

The rest of the world is 'evolving' and thus they are moving forward.

Need I say more?

We are more concerned with pumping up the Department of Defense while the American infrastructure falls apart.

Re: Question

IT's South Korea. They have had Fiber service for few years now from KT (Korea Telecom), only that high-rise apartments were only ones who could get the service. (100Mbps Up and Down for only $30 with 3 year contract). The service is called Entopia.

Now with FTTH service the whole country will enjoy this exciting fiber service. Before other houses, villas, small apts had to use either cable or vdsl or adsl service ranging from 10Mbps to 2Mbps.

I hope my job application to KT goes through. (I'm Korean native, not US citizen).
