180Solutions: Really Reformed?
Sunbelt software says not even close
(old news - 09:24AM Tuesday Mar 15 2005)
tags: software · spyware
180Solutions, scared of coming legal reform, has been attempting to convince anti-spyware developers (and the public) they are a reformed, legitimate business. Spyware Warrior points out that Sunbelt Software has dug into the company's practices and software (see this pdf, and related blog entry), and claims in reality they've done little to clean up their act. As we've noted, Spyware vendors are engaged in a massive PR campaign to improve their image; but are their apps coming along for the ride?

The truth

We're complete businessmen with a goal to screw you and everyone you know out of their money so we can buy our platinum ocean liners and to greater increase the class ratio to further nose dive the economy.... but in a nice way.

Tell you what...

I'd accept 180delusions as truly reformed only after they removed any existing infection from the net.

Re: Tell you what...

Personally, I'd only recognize 180solutions as reformed once they withdrawl completely from any market that's computing-involved...and that they set their CEO on fire, simply for a measure of good faith.

You spy on me? I spy on you!

Looking from across I-90

If 180Solutions wants to "spy" on us then we will spy on 180Solutions!

Since I have to drive by 180Solutions every day on I-90, then why not share what I see every day.

I'm sure the 180 shill will be here any minute to tell us how uninformed we are.

It will always be "spyware"

To me at least, all of these companies that have infested our computing experience over the years have been permanently branded in my mind as "spyware" (or whatever "ware" you wish to use) , and until these companies are out of business and gone from the face of the planet i will do everything in my power to keep this crap off of my system, no matter how much they try to clean up their so called "image".

ruthless marketers in an expanding & unregulated i

ruthless marketers in an expanding & unregulated industry.

The sad story is that however they change their image, most users will never care, becaues they don't care to know and somehow "live" with the fact their computer will have popups, and their home pages will change to stupid search sites.

180Solutions had some IE exploit last year that auto installed their SPYWARE, what else do you want me to call it? Took me a painstaking hour to track down everything and save a computer without formatting.

Who Cares What You Call It?

The fact of the matter is that in my own experience it's mostly kids and teens who click through the EULA much like digging through the breakfast cereal box for the toy.
When the truth of that hits the regulators that these scumbags (are you listening 180Solutions?) are picking on kids, they no doubt will take steps to insure that minors are no longer exploited by these slight of the hand backdoor poopware installs.

They don't 'Spy' they 'recognize'

Definition of: "Keyword targeting, target match"
"MetricsDirect software recognizes keywords on users browsers and delivers new IE browser windows with web pages matched to those keywords."

They don't hijack either they 'land'
Definition of: "Landing web page or URL"
"The page an advertiser links to a targeted phrase or keyword. MetricsDirect brings this page to consumers interested in that product or service."

But, that right there is the point. Yes, I may be interested in something, but what if I don't want to find out about it RIGHT now.

For example, I love Roller Coasters. Do you think I want pop-ups every 5 seconds on every coaster in the world?

If I want to look for something, there are search engines out there for me to use, WHEN I AM READY TO.

Its one thing to market something, and be able to help people find what they are looking for. The problem I have is that unless I go to google, altavista, webcrawler, etc, then I am NOT LOOKING for anything, so why shove ads in my face?

That is why in my book they will always be (as others have said) "Spyware".

The only way I would use them as a service is if they had a webpage I could go (say 180solutions.com), and then allowed me to do a search for products. Nothing installed on the client PC. Just a search engine like the others out there.

If that never happens, then they belong in the same group as the sludge at the bottom of the Hudson River.

There is no reform

These companies are like a co-worker that steals stuff from your desk. They have no interest in stopping their offensive behavior, they just want to know, what is the biggest thing they can take without you getting pissed off? Hmm, he got sorta upset about the stapler, so I'll just go back to nabbing pens...

People who have honest intentions don't hover close to the moral borders, they don't even consider how far they can go, they do exactly what they tell people and no more.

Re: Another sob story con't...

It's funny, but this is advertising at it's best. This is what these people are paid to do. Don't hire a lawyer or a politician to make you sound better or be something your not. You hire advertisers.

They are trained to pour syrup on turds and make you believe it's actually flapjacks.

That's why this whole PR push is so damn funny.

Spyware no better than viruses

If it gets onto your system without your knowledge, it is no different than a virus and these boneheads should be thrown behind bars.
