Half of 30 busiest airports have public Wi-Fi
(old news - 12:54PM Sunday Mar 06 2005)
tags: wireless · stats
In case you've ever wondered, USAToday has broken down which Wi-Fi vendors serve the busiest U.S. airports in a chart that compliments this story on the subject. About half of the nation's 30 busiest airports offer Wi-Fi in public areas, but all of them offer it in airline clubs. Plenty of tid-bits in the article: there are 18,000 Wi-Fi connections made a month at the Dallas/Fort Worth airport, up from 50 in 2000.

Airport gates are the perfect place for WiFi

Airport gates are the perfect place for WiFi. You have to wait, sometimes for hours, and internet access lets you get email, check on travel arrangements, etc. All airports need to jump on this badwagon.

Most of the airport terminals I've been to usually have free WiFi.

The handful that have pay-for service usually are setup in the proximity of a free (unsecured) AP.

Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood (FL) airport has WiFi throughout the entire airport for free also, they annouce it over the airport PA system. Minneapolis/St. Paul has WiFi, but you have to pay a fee to get on it, either a one time access or a recurring fee if you travel through there a lot. Personally, I'm really liking Holiday Inn Express hotels.. most have high speed into the room, and free WiFi in the lobby.. Unlike the regular Holiday Inn I stayed at in Plantation, FL, which offers a blistering 19.2k dial up, but you have to have your own provider ph# (Which I don't, with a city owned provider in Podunk, Arkansas.

Re: Airport gates are the perfect place for WiFi

Yep, FLL is great for WiFi. All free and at any one time I usually pick up at least 4 APs.

What I found funny is that I couldn't find squat at ORD on a recent trip. However, at the Rochester, MN airport you've got WiFi as well. Rochester has six gates.

If someone knows somewhere at ORD with WiFi...lemme know.

Good To Know

Its good to know that they are adding this to more and more airlines all the time. Just can't wait till its available on all the planes. It sure will make flying a lot less boring. Though you'll be hearing a lot of typing if you are one of those people that just seem to want to sleep.

Re: Good To Know

fwiw, they are talking about the airports, not the airplanes.

but i do agree, having it in each gate is the ideal situation, i think it would make those 6-8 hour delays go by a bit faster.

Airport Wi-Fi

I fly between San Diego and Phoenix.
Neither airport has Wi-Fi.
I wish Southwest would have Wi-Fi or at least allow someone like Boingo to provide Wi-FI.
I guess that is what I get for getting the cheapest air fare.

but what about power

...but most airport make it impossible to get power for your laptop. I have scouted out outlets in a lot of airports and sometimes there is a waiting line of people to use them. I usually carry a little 3-way cube so I can share when I find one (whether or not it is in use already )
The most amazing thing is that you find this appalling lack of planning even in brand new terminals. For example, the A wing at Seattle-Tacoma has one double outlet near some of the gates, rigged so that people have to trip over your cord if you use it. I found a grand total of 3 accessible outlets in Terminal 4 at Heathrow, presumably one of the busiest international transit hubs in the world! In many terminals, there are simply no outlets at all. Some others have outlets that are hazardous to use (burned spring contacts, loose attachment). I understand the technical/security issues, but in the US they could very simply use low amp rated GFCI outlets ($9 at Home Depot) to limit power drain, prevent accident and especially prevent anyone from accidentally tripping the breakers for circuits that might feed other stuff. But airport builders are still living in the 20th century it seems.

I like the idea of carrying a 3 way plug, I am off to put one in my computer bag. Nice idea!

I agree with out about the power outlets.
I am going to carry that three way thing from now on.

Sometimes I get so upset about airports. The flight is only an hour. I have to drive 30+ minutes to the air port (usually through morning rush hour traffic), 30 minutes to find a parking space and shuttle/bus to terminal, arrive 2 hours before flight to check bag and get through security (wish I didn't have to check bag but carry lots of work related stuff), flight 1 hour, get off flight and get bags 30 minutes, 30+ drive to office. This is not a joke - It can take up to 5 hours from house to office, when you can drive there is 6 hours. ARRRHHHH! I just wish there was a way to stream line getting in and out of the airport. I would never trade flying for driving - I just wish the experience was better. Technology was suppose to make life better not turn us into lemmings waiting in a lines.

Thanks for the rant - now back to you regular programming

There is if you (or your expense account) are willing to pay for it. You use a Cab or Airport Limo. You go portal to portal (Home/Office Terminal) without the hassle of the "wasted" time of locating a parking spot/your car and the shuttle/bus trip to/from the terminal (you get dropped off/picked up at the terminal saving 1 hour [from your listed times] each way).

Stop whining.....

People used to have to spend months and possibly their lives to get from point A to point B. Today, we buy a ticket for an amazingly low price and jump on a plane and we're at our location in hours, not months.

I hate it when people complain about things like airport security being beefed up or the fact that a flight is "boring." I find it amazing I could go from the Americas to Europe in 6 hours where it used to take months.

um, dude....it hasn't taken months to get from america to europe in over a century. even before airplanes a steamer could make it in a couple of weeks.

I know.... I'm referring to the time centuries ago. But still, I am NOT anti-progress, I just hate how people today need to surf the net because they are "bored" sitting on a plane for a few hours. Maybe I'm the only one who actually thinks it is cool being able to hop between continents in hours not MONTHS or WEEKS (on a steamer).

A cool day...

What I'm looking forward to is the day when there aren't any forums talking about "half the major airports have wifi..."

That day will happen when everywhere has wifi available, and it's no big deal.

Just like we don't have forums talking about "half the homes in the US have telephones..."

That'll be a cool day!

Make it free

Ok I know somebody has to pay for it but I think it sucks having to pay to use WiFi if I just want to check my email or something in 30 minutes before the plane leaves. The only airport that I have been to since putting a wireless card in my notebook was Austin Bergstrom. I think it had 2 (or 3) providers, all pay to surf. No other WAPs detected open or closed. Needless to say, I didn't pony up the cash and just listened to Dark Side of The Moon while waiting.

Fortunately though it had an abundance of power outlets.

Detroit, OHare or Memphis don't have WiFi

I was in Smith terminal at Detroit - no Wifi. Terminal 3 (American Airlines) at O'Hare - no Wifi and Memphis International - No Wifi. (This was last November) Memphis and Detroit I can understand, Memphis isn't that big of an airport and Detroit, I was in the oldest terminal where they only things they had were a newspaper stand and a Starbucks, but O'Hare surprised me. I would think that one of the largest airports in the world would have Wifi available as it is one of the busiest as well. Went to the food court at O'Hare (McDs, Burrito Beach, Starbucks and Panda Express) and got nothing. Went to G gates of the terminal - nada. H gates - nada. Disappointing.

As of May 2005 Memphis now has WiFi through Sprint. The company I work for and myself actually installed it.
