Comcast Revamps Portal
But do customers really care?
(old news - 12:04PM Wednesday Mar 02 2005)
tags: cable
Comcast users point out that Comcast has revamped their customer portal, with a bigger emphasis on broadband content. Of course as one of our recent unscientific polls indicates, most customers couldn't care less about this aspect of service; they are interested in price-drops and upstream increases.

Doesn't work with Firefox

The new Comcast start page doesn't work well with the Firefox browser.

Pretty typical from Comcast...

Re: Doesn't work with Firefox

Someone should shoot their whole marketing dept.

Perhaps if someone started a www.whycomcastsucks.com page and got some publicity about it Comcast would start paying attention to what matters vs. what looks sexy to hype on the dumbed down TV commercials they run.

Seems to work fine with Mozilla 1.7. I'm not a ComCast subscriber though.

With the Flash Click To View extension installed, the page comes up pretty quickly, since the bloated Flash interfaces don't load until I choose to load them.

What doesn't work. Just spending a few minutes there I didn't find anything that looked wrong. Not like Verizon's site which throws fits when Firefox tries to log you in. I'm not a Comcast sub though so I can't go everywhere on the site.

It doesn't work when you try to login to their system with Firefox or Safari (both for the Mac). What is it with Comcast and flash based sites? I think they personally suck and take too much time to load (that is if they load at all, which isn't the case for Comcast.net).

It gets stuck on "Preloading Preferences" and has been that way for about 3 minutes on my T1 line at school.

I think I'll stick with the HTML version for a while (seeing how it's the only version I can use at the moment )

Edit: It doesn't even work with Internet Explorer for the Mac when I try logging in. Wonderful!

Exactly what happens when you try to visit the site? From my browser:
(Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20050226 Firefox/1.0)
the thing goes into redirect hell unless I let comcast.com drop cookies on my machine.
Incidentally, does anyone know what causes that to happen?

I know exactly what's happening. Here's how to work around it:

1. Set your browser to prompt for cookies.
2. Accept the first cookie Comcast offers.
3. Decline all others.
4. Reset your cookie blocking settings to the way they were previously.

This should leave one persistent cookie from Comcast and the problem should go away.

I saw no problem with Firefox loading the page, maybe it is just your version.

Portal What?

I had Comcast for two and a half years, and I don't think I ever once had reason to visit their portal. Portals are for people that are being weaned of AOL and don't know where to find anything.

When will they get it through their thick heads?

Re: They will never learn......

I'm not sure I agree. Corporations have been telling us what we want and what to buy for years, and the majority of people are susceptible to their marketing. Marketing is the number one money-making field in the US (at least is 1999), so it must be working pretty well.

Re: They will never learn......

Most people also accept it and do nothing to change it.

What needs to happen is people actually taking the time to tell Comcast (or whomever) that we do not want content. We want better pricing, customer service, speed, etc.

portal - smortal

well it's just as bad as the old one .. wait worse - it doesn't fit in an 800 x 600 browser window.. and it's 100% flash (!?!) so sad.

I haven't yet tested it for FF usability, i'm sure it won't work well in it.

suggestion: Comcast, give up on the portal idea. Use the resourses for network enhancements.

Just fix it so I can go directly to mailcenter.comcast.net without it redirecting back to the portal. Please!? The attbi site worked this way, why can't yours? I only want to check email.

And don't forget the KISS principle: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

Comcast.net Firefox No NO

To bad their site doesn't work with firefox, you would think with the growing popularity that they would at least have CHECKED to see if it worked in firefox. Looks like I won't be heading to their site at all anytime soon.

You should take a look at your computer. It works fine with FireFox, both 1.0 and 1.0.1. Look above and see that I am not the only one who can get to the new site without any issues.

Flash based portal is S L O W

One word for this web portal - SLOW. This web site is among the slowest on the internet. Lots of content, but since it is based on Macromedia Flash it is a slow as molasses.

Come on Comcast - create a web page using something besides Flash.

That's what I get too. I'm using the MOOX M2 20050226 trunk of Firefox. In the XP Windows Task manager firefox.exe uses 280MB of RAM before it automatically clears out the cache and goes back to 22MB. And it still does that error message. The error message even 'works' in Microsoft's Internet Exploder.

Yep, it's crashing Mozilla with the same error message.
But it was working fine a short time ago.

They must be tweaking it to the point of non-usability again.

Price drop, please

Prices ran up about 1 month ago. I'm almost paying a full 50.00 for cable internet & that's with the TV discount. With basic cable + internet, my bill is about 109.00 before tax.

Could care less if their page had a good look to it or not. Think I'll pay the fee and have Verizon jack up my house for DSL (give me 2 months, I'll maybe moving to DSL)

Increase Web based Services

Comcast needs to improve online services and then I will use the portal.

Right now I can only check and pay my bill. I don't want just another news/fluff feed. I want value add. Comcast is trying to be a content company, they are a delivery company and should stick to delivery.

How about....

- Add or remove channels/packages online
- Order pay-per-views online (avoid NetFlix completely)
- For those w/o a PVR, have an online channel guide for your service area
- Online ratings (here is a revenue source!...rate a show!)

If they really want to think out of the (cable) box...

- Offer an online PVR that I can schedule and view remotely
- Check the status of my broadband account (how much Gb did I upload this month) To help people avoid the dreaded violation letter.
- Customer Service Quality Surveys, let them know if the service they provide is cutting it

That's for starts anyway.

Ads

I see they still have the ads on the left side. Why should we be forced to see ads for a service we pay more than enough for?

Re: Ads

Totally agree... Having adds on a customer portal site, is out of line. It's like, we aren't paying enough to Comcast and they absolutely depend on income generated by those adds. Pretty soon Comcast will start selling email address listings to spamers as well (a sad joke, that could very well be true)... Then again, Comcast is one of those companies that will gladly stick a banner on your digital cable box even if it absolutely cripples efficiency of it...

Disable Firewall?

Looks like Comcast wants users to 'uninstall' all firewalls before installing their Security Manager program.

Link here: »comcast.net/security/manager/

Doesn't sound like good practice to be 'uninstalling' anything (especially one's firewall) just to load more software. Is this an error on Comcast's part, or just bad software coding? I don't know about you...but I can't imagine giving up my firewall for Comcast (not to mention that it's not possible to uninstall Windoze's firewall).

Shameful...

Re: Disable Firewall?

Because their security manager program includes a firewall, and it seems to me to be a good idea to not have 2 software firewalls fighting each other. How Shameful of them to tell the end user to uninstall redundant software; we could all use more concerned about security but computer illiterate users running NAV, AVG, PandaAV, McAfee, Spybot, Adaware, and MS Anti-spy, ZoneAlarm and Comcast Security manager all at the same time in realtime scanning mode, trying to track down that spyware that's slowing their system to a crawl.

comcast's "The Fan"

Im a comcast subscriber, but i find that i can no longer access comcast's "The Fan" @comcast.net. Instead, im faced with this weird clicking noise like the browsers got Terretes syndrome. It doesnt load and all i see is a white screen. I have the general Internet Explorer browser, as well as Nortons antivirus software. Comcast is saying something about Macromedia Flash. I did what they said and got Macromedias Flash Player, still nothing. Im so pissed off i dont know what to do. Hopefully i wont be faced with this problem on my A+ OS exam.
