Tthe airlines create specific flights that are "cell-phone" enabled / disabled.. kinda like what they did with smoking / non-smoking flights.
Worse yet, when you book a flight one of the new quesitons will be; "Do you want to be on a Cell-phone use area of the plane or not?" I can just imagine folks that want to use thier cell phones in flight will book a seat in the non-cell phone area, then get up and walk to the area of the plane; stand in the isle and make their calls...
This is gonna get ugly | |

In public places, you can frequently distinguish who's carrying on a cell conversation from others carrying on interpersonal conversation without even seeing them. Many of them basically scream into the phone.
That would get really annoying sitting next to someone on a plane who's trying to look important or is just bored and wanting to yak with their friend/girlfriend/boyfriend/kid/parent/co-worker, etc.
If people actually carried on cellular conversations at reasonable volume, it probably wouldn't be a problem. -- When people are free to do as they please, they usually imitate each other.

I personally like people to shut up on the plane. Not really in the mood to "chit chat" after rushing to the airport, to slow down, then wait let alone have to sit and listen to some teenage girl babble on and on to her girlfriend about how Joey left her best friends number on his phone.
I think they should take out those stupid phones in the seats, keep cell phone usage off, and maybe add more TVs with headphones or something. I like the meal idea too!
I also, since I am going on and on, really get annoyed at how once you land the cell phones just all come on. Everybody turns em on and starts chatting away. (They could just wait until the terminal). There is more annoying chit-chat at that moment about "how horrible the flight was" or if Spot has gotten over his explosive diarrhea. This is a prime example of how much worse your flight could get.
WI-FI would be nice. Just let me surf the web, quietly. You cannot really here my keyboard over the aircraft noise anyways.

Well, it doesn't have so much to do with me being hungry persay...but how asking for the most minor of services isolates me out as a "security risk".
For example, I was sitting in the first coach row on an airline, and had a biological need cry out mid-flight. So, I move towards the front lavatory, only to be shoved back by a stewardess saying I couldn't approach the cockpit. Upon telling her I needed to use the restroom, she pointed me towards the WAAAAY back of the plane - a path which would require vaulting a stewardess, a small family, and a drink cart. I kindly pointed to the bathroom a few feet away, but she gave a firm "HELL NO" response. Upon asking why, she said "It's a security risk. You might be rushing the cockpit."
Yeah, um...whatever. No offense hun, but nobody with that full a bladder is going to rush ANYTHING, let alone a locked cockpit door.

I would never thought that could be any situation worse than putting up with a screaming baby during flight (mostly because those poor souls are enduring painful earaches). But having to put up with those lingering pompous, loud phone conversations, particularly in first class, is far worse. It's bad enough to have to endure them while on the ground. Delta Crown rooms have a quiet zones where cell phone usage is forbidden.
The airlines should have a small restricted area for cell phone users in the back of the plane, just like they did for smokers in the seventies.

The article says the plane will use a type of transceiver. That means a handoff to a roaming carrier which means roaming charges for those that do not carry those plans. It also states that the handsets will have to be capable of transmitting less than the 0.6 watt it normally transmits. Lastly and for those that have used Airfone; line of site works differently and unpredictably for a cellphone at higher altitudes. Yuo expect the phone to work the same way it does on the ground. It won't! The technology will be no different, just that you added a pico cell (middle man) between you and the receiving party. This will not be a free ride.

Then problem is that cellphones dont work properly so people need to yell in it. What is the difference between people have a conversation with another person at a resturant or on a bus. I know I know you dont like the one way conversation well the conversation doesn't include you dont listen. If someone talks in a normal tone there is nothing wrong with a cell conversation.

I've found that a good way to get people to be more sensitive to the where and how of their having a cell phone conversations is to begin talking loudly about whatever the person on the cell is talking about.
They'll be PO'd about you paying attention but they'll also either cut short the call or at least lower their voice.
I have no problem with removing the cell phone regs on aircraft (they're mostly a sham anyway), but in return people on cell phones need to learn how to not be total jackasses when using said phone. Problem is we can't even get people who need 2 seats (nor the airlines who continue to permit this practice with a shrug) to respect the fact that sitting halfway on their neighbors lap is inappropriate, which in my mind ranks a much higher inconvenience. -- sprry; I kust gpt s new leubprd////////keyboard

| "The Captain has turned on the no cell phone sign" At this point there is no connectivity for US air passengers. One or two Europeans have it. I do however have mobile ip service on my cell thru Nextel that I use on my laptop in the car when I'm out doing work as a Real Estate Appraiser. If they set up "pico cells" on planes to forward GSM and CDMA signals to/from the ground then that means that some of us will have internet in flight.
If I have to go by means of my phone to get internet in flight, then so be it... I'll be too audible pre-occupied with my headphones on listening to music and surfing the web the whole time to ever be distracted by some loud mouth, drunk, or self-absorbed person talking on his cell phone. And granted my own statement sounds just as absorbed... but it's my 2 cents that are equal to any of yours.
I bet most people here that either like or dislike the cell ban are just itching for kind of in-flight wireless connection. I see no difference, everyone has their preferred method of distraction while on a plane... let them have choices.
Maybe if it gets really bad, after the ban is lifted, the airlines will be nice and have "quiet times" during flights longer than 3 hours so that all the whiners can rest in peace. Sheesh, like people won't adapt to the environment they are in. MP3 players are still climbing in sales, I'm sure anyone who isn't talking on a phone will be listening to something else after a while. Travellers like choices and experienced travellers always have their in-flight toys.

| yes the guy on the cellphone IS more annoying than the two people sitting in front of you having a conversation
i find when people are on cell phones (or even using microphones) there is this phenomenon where they need to talk extra loud for some reason (or what if they had a bad connection and had to) and suddenly their conversation is the most important thing in the world to everyone within earshot, oh goodie
i guess you could just kick the back of their chair
people chit chatting about the banal details of their life just to say "hey i'm calling you from a plane" shouldn't be allowed to disturb everyone within earshot
maybe they can make a cell phone only flight or section on the plane

Talk to your neighbor.....play with the crying baby.....enjoy the view out the window. Try to show some interest in something other than yourself. You may find life as intriguing as I do. I agree in theory with your statements. What most are missing here is simply the lack of cell phone etiquette in general-not just on planes, but everywhere else.
The confined space of an airplane seems to add to the agitation factor exponentially, like elevators, cars, trains, subways, etc. Americans like their personal space-if you've travelled abroad you know what I mean-and cell phones have invaded that personal space. Our culture's attitude is "do what I say, not what I do" so therefore we can yap all day about astroturf but can't stand it when our neighbor is cooing to their girlfriend on the exact same phone.
Just because we can call instantly wherever, whenever we want doesn't necessarily mean we should. And if you just have to save that extra 4 minutes waiting for your ride by calling as soon as the plane lands, why not exercise some respect and speak in a polite tone, at a polite volume? Consideration for others is an adult skill we've shitcanned in the name of "progress". Ballyhoo to progress.
BTW: I have 2 cellphones, and use them frequently. Nobody is getting rich on the plans I have, but they are useful, when used appropriately. I don't use them unless I have to, and only in the privacy of my stopped vehicle, office, or home, so unless my fuzzy dice have ears, I'm not irritating anyone. Just to show I practice what I preach...
