Way better than MSN Maps! It's a clean cut interface, no annoying ad (for now) and I really love the map browsing system, very smooth.

I can't beleive it! They got my address right!
Mapquest, Yahoo and Rand McNalley do not even have the new road on their maps, and it was built 3 years ago!

There may be a few quirks but I overall it is friendly and easy to read.

anyone that can find my address on a map has a good map. yahoo and mapquest screw it up nicely.

Re: Right on the money!

No mapping service to this date can get my address correct on a map...

I know Google's map is a beta, which would explain why they pegged my address being 12 miles from where it really is.

Oh well...

It's still in beta, so I didn't expect too much but it's pretty nice. Love the drag feature. They're using the same data as Y! but looks so much more spiffier.

I tried directions for Toronto. Still messes up some directions, as in, it allows left turn on streets that don't allow it all the time, and so far it seems that it only uses the main roads.

Are you sure they are using the _same_ data as yahoo? Google says 2005, while yahoo says 2004 for navteq. I'm sure they have to shell out some $$$ for db updates.

About Google vs MSN, I ditched MSN News for Google News last year, I ditched MSN-Hotmail last year for Google mail, I'll ditch MSN-Maps now for Google Maps and the only thing I still use from MSN is MSN Messenger so my question is: Can we expect Google to jump in the instant messaging wagon?

I love this.
In the top, jsut type "gas near 123 any road, any city". So cool! e.g. »maps.google.com/maps?q=gas%20nea···4s%203g4
But, directions aren't very good.
e.g. »maps.google.com/maps?q=gas%20nea···4s%203g4
b/c left on Eglinton isn't always allowed. better way to get there is to turn left on Chaplin Crescent.

The graphing is awesome

This beats the crap out of MapQuest ... which I think sucks. I still like maps.yahoo.com for its localization capabilities.

The graphics and colors on the maps are vivid and the drag feature is simply fantastic.

Just add some options...

All they need to do to make this perfect is to add trip planning and alternate route display options. I'd never go back to MapQuest for anything. By itself, it's UBER powerful. Well done Google!

Long Live Google

I love Google

I also like the click and drag. You don't have to use the left bar to move around the map. Just click and drag.

(I know I posted this already, just have no idea where it ended up. lol )

Also, try your left/right/up/down arrows or Page Up and Page Down.

I've already found a really cool use. Put in your home address. Then, when the map with your home comes up, click "Local Search", type in "Restaurants", and click Search. You'll get a mapped-out view of restaurants in your surrounding area along with supporting links (just click the "building" icon) for more information.

I'm not familar with that. I have been using DeLorme products since they first introduced their GPS navigation suite.

Check this out. You got GPS receiver, detailed street level mapping of the entire US with tons of additional data like hotels, phone numbers, restaurants, all kinds of crap for just $150. I plug it into my laptop and I now have a 14" color navigation system. I have used it all over the country and I love it.

Try buying some GPS gadget today with a tiny ass screen and maybe a detailed map of your region. Oh maybe $1000. Nice.

They got popular and then they got rediculously expensive.

On my boat I use Garmin which is also very good.

Search Ability is Disappointing

Too bad it couldn't find either of two addresses I plugged in to it. It got rather close, but it was still off by 5+ miles. Both times it picked a different street than the one I had typed in, rather than just tell me it was having trouble. But then again, it's still in beta so who knows. I do like the drag feature though.

Looks Promising

This product looks very promising and will likely take MapQuest's place for me even though it is still in beta. Once they iron the kinks out (wherever they are, I haven't found them yet), there shouldn't be any comparison between the two.

edit: I take that back, I'm finding some as I go. When I did an address search for the company I work with, it showed properly (even showed the company information, including their website). However, when I attempted to get directions from my house to that location, I was given the error:

We could not understand the location 400 [STREETNAME] Blvd., Nicholasville, KY 40356.

Good, but...

The interface certainly is fast, but not customizable and has limited data sets.
ArcIMS servers still are lightyears beyond this.
Also, the road accuracy is still pretty bad. There are no scale bars, north arrows, legends, or click and drag measurement.
For now I would probably stick with the ArcIMS servers and Rand McNally, but the speed and smoothness of the interface is a big plus.

North arrows are useless because there's no map rotation. Everything up is north all the time.

Poor directions

I live in Chicago about a half mile from a major interstate, and my office is 1 mile off the same interstate. But, for some reason google thinks I should take backroads all the way in. LOL. Oh well, I reported it to them so hopefully they can work on the algorithm or whatever.

Re: Close but no cigar

No highway numbers shown in Ontario from what I can see, other provinces show highways as interstates. Some areas do not have close up maps, other areas the street names are in French when they should be in English (or at least give us a choice)

This is definitely another bar-raising by Google. Will the veteran map providers follow suit or rest on their laurels?

Has my subdivision, but street name is wrong.

Well, they did a pretty good job thus far. I cannot help but think their information is being based one someone else's efforts as they certainly didn't send Google employees on walkabouts.

Why?

On the initial screen, you are given two input boxes for getting directions from one location to another. You would think that you enter one address into one text box and the other address into the other box. However, upon doing this and clicking "Search", you are shown the address corresponding to the "Search" button you clicked. I really don't understand the purpose of two text boxes if you can only use one at a time.

forgotmypass

@verizon.n

Re: Why?

You have to put both addresses into the same location box.

Why'd they give you two search boxes? Just bad UI design. They're trying to provide you with example searches so you can see how it works.

My problem - route ignored WA state ferry system

Here's the suggestion/comment I sent to Google about my difficulty. If any of you have problems with the system, send them a notice so they can fix it.

I was trying to get directions from Seattle (98119 specifically) to my house @ Coupeville, WA 98239, which is on Whidbey Island. The system recommended that I travel all the way around the North end of the island instead of using the Mukilteo/Clinton ferry on the South side.

I figured that the system might consider using the ferry "out of the way," so I tried getting directions from the Mukilteo ferry dock itself to my house. Unfortunately, it still told me to drive all the way around to the North end of the island.

The odd thing about this is that your system shows the ferry route on the map, as well as the numerous other routes throughout the Puget Sound area.

Besides this fault, the system is wonderful and looks very promising. Thanks for another useful feature and best wishes to the Google Maps team!

Re: My problem - route ignored WA state ferry system

I have a similar problem. I live in Valencia, CA and need to go to Oxnard, CA. There's a highway (126) that's pretty much a fast, straight shot from here to there. But instead Google (as well as many others) insists that I go down the 405, to the 101, which is *way* out of the way and significantly slower, even without traffic (well, if you can manage to hit the 405 without traffic...)

Google seems to recognize that Californians drive fast...LOL

69 mi (about 1 hour 0 mins)

It thinks I'm going to *average* 70mph from a city location to another city location, LOL.

Re: With all of these goodies

What is REALLY unbelievable is how long MapQuest and Yahoo Maps, et all, have been around and THEY didn't think of offering some of these features first!??

Why NOT have dragable maps? why not have instant zooming? Probably because they want to shove bandwidth sucking ads at you with each subsequent page load.

The ability to find my fav restaurants in a particular area with a simple "Restaurant XYZ in City" and then being able to click on the map and get phone numbers and directions... amazing.
