Just another way for the sports network to tack on overhead to big leagues salaries.
No thanks. League players are way overpaid anyway and for cable to pass this on to subscribers that never tune in to ESPN is ridiculous.
Overall, cable rates are incredibly high. DirecTV is still a better option.

| Guess who is raising rates faster and more often? Yea satelite companies raise their rates but you don't see them raising their rates in a outrageous manner like cable companies do. According to the facts in this article, cable companies raise their rates higher in places where they don't have competition. Satelite only raises prices because it has to and it is still cheaper then cable. Cable companies raises rates because they want to. That is the difference. | |

| Re: Dish and Direct Tv raise rates 2 RTFA, the reason they are looking at cable is it's a yearly occurrence. Satellite companies are not raising rates as frequently. I believe in 10 to 12 years Directv has raised rates 3 times total and Dishnetworks the same.
In short cable 1 to 2 times a year increases. Satellite every 3 to 4 years an increase.

3 edits | Re: Dish and Direct Tv raise rates 2 Don't flame me for not doing research on the subject. I am just making comparisons. Cable tv provides more channels if you look at direct tvs website and got the TOTAL CHOICE PREMIER with locals pack you are looking at getting 205 channels for 87$ compared to my local tv provider which provides 250 channels for 83$ Direct tv has 30 premium channels dish has 31. Cox has 45 total premium stations . Which to you sounds like a better value 250 channels for 83$ or 205 for 87 . My cable provider provides 45 music choice channels direct tv only does 30. I forgot to mention entertainment on demand. Which adds 4 more premium channels to the list of 45. I can fast forward rewind put movies on pause watch them when I want. I can watch premium stations programming on my own time . I can also get my services bundled together and save even more money. With cable you get more for your money and local service. If I have a problem with a bill or a remote I can walk into a front counter which is just down the street from me. You can not do that with dtv. I can watch local high school football and basketball games on the cox channel. Best of all I do not have a big ugly dish in my yard.

| Re: Dish and Direct Tv raise rates 2 Big ugly dish in your yard ?
Scary those are so 70's/80's.
Small dish side of my house you can't even see unless you are in my yard and looking behind my chimney under the eve and overhang. (No rain between dish and lnb and I never get the problems cable co's claim)
Dishnetwork gives me music channels in mono (old stuff) Stereo and even sirius radio for nadda added to my subscription.
Also channels Wise
180 channels $48 plus sirius radio those are close to 45 channels. No hbo or anything.
$83 and I get 230 channels as well as the sirius channels. And I get hdtv content also. Which is pretty neat considering. Plus no crappy looking VOD or digital cable with pixelation all over the place. (got dvd's for VOD not to far of a walk to blockbuster from here). It's all area dependent.
The part you got "flamed" about was the fact you didn't read the article fully and failed to see the rate increases seen yearly by many with cable. -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!"

1 edit | Re: Guess who is raising rates faster and more often? I hope you realize that BUD (Big Ugly Dish) is still commonly used. They were never intended for the home market. You have to realize with Cable there getting their content from satellite as well but then compress it and that weakens the signal even more going through miles of "cable line" and then eventually to coaxial. Digital Broadcast Satellite providers are just as guilty. The signal is broadcasted from a studio to space, the DBS gets their signal and then REBROADCASTS it compressed and the customers get their content from the dish, the only different is it's completely digital unlike "digital cable". I myself use DISH and find them much better than cox and cheaper.
Now before you flame about "Big Ugly Dishes" believe me they have use. For one back in the day and even today you were able to get channels for free because you didn't have a "provider". Most had a motor to change to different satellites and get their programs. Today you can still get free programming, some programs charge and you aren't forced to order a subscription. There are pros and cons about both. I'll give you some about BUD's. Your getting the signal STRAIGHT from the source, it's not compressed at all therefore you don't get all those nasty artifacts or anything. While not as popular as DBS or digital cable, look around rural areas and smaller suburbs, you will find plenty of people with them still and they have plenty of good use.
By the way the correct term of a BUD is C-Band satellite/KU

From the article you referenced. It's a good idea when quoting a source to support your opinion that the same source doesn't disprove your opinion.

| Re: Cable Prices... The article I referenced mentions both sides of the argument. Of course dtv is going to maintain that it doesn't raise rates as much as cable . My cable company has only raised the rates slightly the past few years I have had them. My argument is do not go after the cable company's and satellite company's go after the real source of the problem . The content providers Espn and Viacom are the real source of increased bills. I have also pointed out that you can get more premium channels with cable no one has disproved that argument yet. | |

| Cable expenses Another reason cable cos. raise rates is the cost of operation is much greater than it is for Dish cos. For the most part, cable cos. don't own the poles they're on, so you pay pole rental. Cable cos. have numerous local employees at every office that are dispatched for all reasons (installs, changes of service, trouble calls, etc.) Cable also has to maintain the cable plant, power supplies, head end, etc. They also have to pay for power to each of these power supplies and head ends. With a dish, they don't have lines on poles, other than from the dish to your house, hence, no pole rental. Most dish cos. have very few employees at each office that usually cover a very large area in comparison to cable, and many of these don't even do service if there is a problem. Dish has no plant to maintain, only pay for satellite feeds. Dish has no power supplies or head ends to pay for power. It's no wonder dish can offer a lower price, until you have a problem. Try getting them to come out and service your trouble call for free. With little or no customer service, slow upload on HSI, no VOD, and expensive repairs, is a dish worth it? | |

| Re: Cable expenses they should call you 78BONEhead! I agree there's a larger overhead cost of operation with cable. One major reason for it that you're overlooking is the cost of programming. Dish Network & DirecTv buy their programming in bulk...one year's worth at a time. Buying a year's worth of programming (from Disney, Viacom, NBC, Turner, News Corp, AOL Time Warner etc.) is cheaper than buying it monthly. That's the major reason why there's an annual contract. Actually Dish Network no longer requires the commitment anymore. There's hardly any profit the 1st year of customer acquisition. Satellite DOES have to pay for maintaining the uplink plants. one plant versus 250+ for cable makes more sense. of course there are hundreds of industrial dishes to make sure the job is done. You can get a free trouble call when you have a warranty. Don't have one? Just buy it when you need it & remove afterwards. If there's still a fee, they can waive it with a little coaxing. there's hardly any need for service calls whenever satellite professionals do the installs in the 1st place. As for service technicians, there are thousands. The entire country is covered by centralized hubs or by subcontractors. Customer Service? There are also thousands. How else can they handle 11/12 million customers calling in everyday reminding them to put the tv on channel 3/4? Then there's VOD. Dish Network has a model 625 that will feature Video-on-demand. It's in the works. DirecTv isn't too far. It's too bad Direct doesn't make their own equipment otherwise they'd be up to speed. Wanna talk about HD? First you have DirecTv with their Spaceway launches. they'll blow away every cable co. Time Warner & Comcast's line-up will be pitiful. Then of course there's Echostar's acquistion of Voom. Enough said there. Cross your fingers what the FCC will do. Let's mention quality a little bit. why are only 30% of Digital Cable channels actually digital? why is it when you playback anything on cable VOD you can see few shades of gray/brown/red? In summary BONEhead, satellite is always at the top when it comes to customer satisfaction. Look at the JD Power award recipients for the last 6 years. if it's more practical NOT to have the signal hard-wired from provider-to-customer, why should it be? | |

| Re: Cable expenses Lets not forget taxes. Cable companies have to pay much higher taxes being their cable runs around cities streets etc.. I think Dishes taxes is around 2 or 3 percent. On my cable bill my taxes add up to over 13 percent. These city and franchise taxes are really heavy with cable compared to what the satelites charge. I have the new comcast price card for my area and none of the prices include these heavy taxes. In small print on the bottom it just says not including taxes and franchise fees etc.. Its something that the cable companies don't want you to know.. until you get your first cable bill. I am sure most cable customer's wonder why their cable bill is so expensive when they get there first bill. | |

| FCC and cable investigation Unbelievable that they would tke so long. Next question is will they do anything at all.
CAble proces are outrageous, and a failure to negotiate lower increases from the networks is no excuse. Then there's the investment by the network parents in "cable" providers, but gee that's not really an issue right? Put a cap at half the current rates and rollback what has been 2 DECADES of pricing that has robbed US customers and you might set an example. Or you could fine them a couple billion and put that back into the public coffers which is what STARTED the cable companies to begin with. Yeah we paid them to start and we pay them again. Fun for them, stinks for us...
