| WiMAX already available in Chicago You can already use WiMAX in Chicago. It's just not 'officially' released yet. Just buy a device and register it in Baltimore then switch the billing address. Don't expect any customer support though.

Sounds to me like it's still a big beta since they don't seem to have chosen any one hardware for roll out.

| Re: WiMAX already available in Chicago Chicago is actually up and running and anyone could use it today if they register the device with a Baltimore address. The people at 4ginfo.com proved it in Chicago.
What Sprint is testing is the customer support and provisioning process. They are doing it with the smallest market first to get the kinks worked out before officially releasing in larger markets.
The Xohm group is almost completely separate from Sprint. Separate billing, separate customer support, almost like a new company. | |

Most will want to wait for EVDO/WiMAX combo cards anyway, which are expected to come by the end of the year. | |

They don't have to deal with any carriers to do it. I imagine we'll start seeing a wide range of devices once combo WiFi/WiMAX chipsets are dirt cheap and when coverage is greater globally. For the next year though, it will probably mostly be laptop cards, modems and some cellphones. | |

Here's proof that the these people don't really know what they're talkinga bout Plenty of people, including myself, can average 133 ms or less on EVDO.

| what would happen to sprint if 300 people got brain tumors.. My feeling about all this, seems no one cares (with what I read as wifi on steroids) what this stuff can do to our brains. We are always put on the defensive to where unless we prove Wimax causes this, its ok to build it anyway. When our country builds a nuke, they don't drop it with no concern as to what the fallout will be for decades to come because they dont really know what the devistation will be till they use it anyway. These companies should be halted and this stuff should be in the labs scrutinized to see what it does and to prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that it does not cause issues before allowing it.
Ok cellphones are out there and under scrutany too but I am hearing that Wimax is twice the transmission power of wifi. If someone watches a movie streaming off the net, that is their head right near the computer for 2 hours of continuous exposure where, on the other hand, people typically talk on the phone for only a period of minutes.
Another thing, how close will the antennas that transmit this stuff be; its not fair to people who don't want to use this to have to be exposed to its potential effects.
People should have a say and this should be voiced, yet I hardly see or read anything about it and its very discouraging and frustrating. What I would like to know as well is, suppose 300 people got a tumor and all of them were heavy users of Wimax, could a judge force Sprint to shut down their entire Wimax network. I mean, look what happened to the tobacco industry when it was clearly proven that smoking caused lung cancer. My understanding, the governments justifacation for taking action was that if it had to, directly or indirectly, absorb the medical fallout costs from conditions caused by tobacco companies encouraging smoking (for example, through ads), then it had a right to add taxes to discourage purchasing cigs. Well, i would like to know if the government can do the same to Wimax if these issues are found.
I don't want to use this, to me, what it can possibly do is not worth it. If I don't want it, I shouldn't have to function in a world where I could possibly end up with this. I would like to mention that using many of these things (cellphones, wifi) does give me headaches at times and when I am not around them, I am not bothered at all; I wouldn't say that was nothing. | |

Please do some research before pontificating about the dangers of RF radiation to ones' brain.
You should be worried about your eyes, kidneys and reproductive organs well before your brain.
Also take a look at exposure rates for RF compared to the radiation from the sun absorbed by a person walking down the street on a summer's day; I think you would be so alarmed by the comparison; you'd never go outside again.
Can it be dangerous to stand directly next to or in front of a working antenna, absolutely, but since the power of the transmitter gets exponentially less as you move away from the source, it quickly becomes 'safe'.
Some AM radio stations have 1,000K Watts of power coming out of them (mostly in Europe)…. Frequencies vastly different, but the power is orders of magnitude different too! | |
