But won't be selling any domain names
(old news - 10:01AM Tuesday Feb 01 2005)
tags: business
The number of hats Google seems to wear expands daily, as Netcraft points out that the company is now an ICANN-accredited registrar of domain names. As with every time Google makes a move, rabid speculation will follow, but the company tells the Register they don't actually plan to sell any domains, and simply wanted "to get a better understanding of the domain name system" to aid their search results.

If they did become a registrar...

do you think there could be a conflict of interest with Google giving better rankings to people who buy domains from them?

Re: If they did become a registrar...

Sure, there would be a conflict of interest if they give better rankings for anybody that paid them for anything, but there is no evidence that they ever have, or any reason that they ever would. The Google model is built on the soundest of search engine policies: Revenue comes with search volume, and search volume comes from providing the searcher with the best possible result set. Any bias in that result set will result in migration to other search engines, and they understand it. Google search will never be perfect, but they spend a ton on finding ways to make it continuously better to attract the traffic.

Mark my words, Google will eventually be a true registrar of domain names and then start offering web hosting.

They are the most trusted and liked name on the Interent, and there are plenty of unhappy customers with other hosting companies.

Also, they already have the infrastructure and know-how to do this, so why not??

"They are the most trusted and liked name on the Interent,..."?!?!

FYI.

(Unless of course, the "Interent" is something other than the Internet. If it is, then my apologies.)

They have paid search listings that appear at the top of the page. Someone has to pay them for those adwords listings.
I doubt they would give higher ratings for buying domain names.

Are you really "laughing out loud" about that?

It's not really that funny, unless I'm missing something.

Is this a Super-Discount store of the I-net?

Hmmm... think they will delve into such things as:

food; clothing; toys; home consumer electronics; auto-mobile equipment; house hold appliances; Office Furniture; Home Furniture; Garden stuff; sporting good equipment; bedding; pots and pans;

Did I miss anything?
