... for the launch of its FiOS TV service this year
(old news - 12:55PM Saturday Jan 29 2005)
tags: business · TVIP
Verizon plans to formally announce on Monday that it will use Microsoft's television technology in the launch of its FiOS TV service this year. The software maker's platform initially will be used to provide an interactive program guide, high-definition television, digital video recording and video-on-demand. Verizon is now the third major telephone company to help fulfill Microsoft's vision of climbing into the TV business. SBC signed a $400 million deal with Microsoft back in November while BellSouth has announced trials with the technology.

Ctrl/Alt/Del button on TV ??

Looks like Microsoft is getting into the Home Theater market big time as PC's and TV's and sound systems all merge. Along with their deals with cable companies, this may be how Microsoft keeps it dominance in the home.

Dominance

see this is the problem......all a huge loophole that ends up back to the problem that bugs everyone the most. copyright infringement. the technology is gearing up towards making everything available on the PC (movies, music and TV shows) so now you run into a user defined level of what is right and what is wrong. i have a tv tuner card and it records very well, just as good as a dvd recorder or even tivo. problem is that recording onto a vcr tape for your personal use isnt wrong. but doing it on your pc is. is it because of the ease of sharing on the pc? no it is because that hollywood feels they are being jipped. i have been and always will be a supporter of the black market for songs and software etc, because my theory is simple. if you can not make a million bucks last you a life time, then you my friend are a complete and total idiot for not properly investing your funds. that is your fault. if there would be some sort of regulation on how much people cold be paid, like baseball players. Roger Clemens was offered 21 million dollars to play this year but he is in arbitration to make it 30 million. that is outrageous. its this kind of poor management that is forcing people to do things the free and not so always legal way. what pisses me off is that since 9-11 everything has gone up. gas and milk and food blah blah and so on. has my pay rate increased along with this? no sir it has not and it is frustrating. the ISPs and the AA's need to meet in the middle on this issue and it needs to be resolved. we are on the cusp of something big, and its going to be digital. there will be no more blockbuster videos. as soon as hte ISPs realize they are holding back the progression of the internet, then we will be able to progress forward. imagine if you were to legally obtain dvd copies of movies such as blockbuster. and you were legally able to make them available for download for a fee. the problem is that a dvd is 4 to 7 gigs. you download 5 or 6 and you might approach that invisible limit of unlimited internet. i know i might be straying a lttle bit from the actual subject here, but the fact is that we are progressing towards an all digital age so the roadblocks that are preventing us from progressing need to be removed. just my 2 cents

Where do you people come from?? a million bux isn't that much at all.

I could blow through it in about an hour if that. If I had a million dollars I would invest Some of it but certainly not all.

@optonline.net

Hey, anyone see ABC's John Stossel's
"Give Me a Break" ?? He went through the top 10 myths of seemingly bad things that are actually good. But I think he missed out on one, George Bush getting re-elected.... people losing their jobs to outsourcing is a good thing, greed (or privitization) is good too, versus sharingm, etc etc etc..
Anyone can make a perception of something seemingly good seem bad: it's called politics. Microsoft being the transport of choice. Cable companies have snubbed M.$. for years about providing a digital tv 'box' and 'codec' format for ip/digital based TV services, well.. if Windows XP is any indication-- it will be hacked in no-time flat...
Next, the service will provide directv and video on demand services via the network... probably have some form of unbundling of channels.
Where it gets sticky, is what happens when people file swap at 2-15mbits the content that they pay to receive? The music industry found it's first big enemy, the windows based pc's and mp3 file format... No doubt some combination of codecs (2-3) will come together to find the best scaleable balance of quality and compression (divx/xvid/mpeg look like short term winners today) because it allows for what people want to do with it (share), but it won't be long before content providers will be going through a similar crisis. Tough, that's technology's process... And I personally think that anyone who pays for a cable tv bill 12/12 months each year should not be charged with ripping off most content, since it will eventually be transmitted as permissions in a future licensed verssion as part of your catv bill, so.. there!
The only abhorant thing you should not be able to do is profit from re-selling the content.

Where did Microsloth/Comcrap come up with that LAME 20th century look'in screen! Reminds me of Pong.
Glad Charter has done a better job with their graphics.

P.S. Thats what Comprap/Microsloth offers in the Seattle, WA area(KOMO AM 1000 I can pick up here in SLO-great talk radio if you're into that format.) Nice job there, Bill. Why not make that Comcrap/Microsloth screen look more XP like? Oh..right...not enough memory, still using 286 microprocessors, ect...

Verizon follows SBC & BST

With the BSOD TV!

Actually, I can see why they would use this platform. First, its a better approach for bandwidth-constrained local-loop networks with 2-3 Mbps SDTV and 8-Mbps HDTV.

SBC & BST are using ADSL2+ for 12-24 Mbps local piping and Fios, well, so far 30 Mbps. Now converge data and IP-voice and its a solution they all want to get in on.

Thats why....

...Convergence won't work on a scale that microsoft envisions. People want their stereo to work, and not depend upon 10 other gizmos to keep it functioning. The future is interlopability between devices, not built-in convergence schemes! They'll get it right eventually, after pushing this billion dollar POS idea down our throats.

There is no where saying one thing relies on another to operate. The embedded systems will be just like a tivo or a cable box itself, nothing more nothing less.

There is no convergence schemes here. They are offering the standard system comcast does now but over a different medium. Is comcast the same way ? No because they are not MS.

Get off your soap box and get the facts before you argue a point like this.

Embedded windows doesn't blue screen.

The main reason for any and all crashes are poorly written software and poorly written drivers. This is eliminated in embedded solutions. Especially considering it is developed by MS themselves for themselves.

Try as hard as you want to bash MS but they aren't going away any time soon.

100% Correct. Windows (or any modern embedded MS product) is stable, third party software is the problem.

Re: Rebooting the TV

TWC says you should reboot your cable box every day anyway. if not at least once a week. Due to software hangs. But some of the Reps and tech/installers fail to tell you that.

WOH told me that when i had it and it would freeze. After the reboots once a week it worked fine.

Patents, Rights, DRM....

That what I really hate. Now probably there will be no way to easily digitally record the movie w/o another M$ product.
Just wait for more and more M$ Windows "extensions" that would made your TV/PC experience even better.
Other players will be left out. I don't need no damned M$ "cable box". All I want is my small computer running linux connected to TV, which of course will do much more than M$ box for much less. And then again, I'll be in control, not Mr. Gates.
So now we went from monopoly to Patents and DRMs... Congrats M$

The dissapointment.

I was very excited about verizon fios, but now, i doubt that i will sign up for it. Microsoft needs to DIE. Horrible ugly greed driven company doing nothing but spreading like a virus through our economy infecting each industry with its disease. The only thing that motivates microsoft is fear of people realizing that we don't need it. WE DO NOT NEED MICROSOFT... LET'S RID OURSELVES OF IT! I for one shake my head at verizon for letting microsoft in the front door w/ red carpet and such. I may switch to comcast for internet actually. The fact that the bells don't have to let competitors on their new fiber creations traps the customer even more. This is totally like microsoft. Wedge themselves in where they are neither wanted nor needed just so they can gain another foothold..

Your loss. I go to whoever can provide the best service for the least amount of money.

Go and look at what Microsoft TV offers, it has 1000X the features of Comcast.

I dont think anybody are under the impression that Microsoft is needed for tv service. Lol, its funny how you probably was so happy that fios/fiber is going to put an end to the cable monopoly, but now your saying fios is a monopoly.

I need microsoft, and I don't want to rid myself of it. Until Linux supports DirectX its a big Loser.. its as good as worthless. Not to mention the 100's of hours I've spent developing advanced Excel workbooks, all of which can't be used on Linux (under various excel look-a-likes) because of the visual basic functionality. The nature of the corporate entity is greed, and we'd still be hitting rocks together to make fire if it wasn't for them. Greed is the only thing that will get legions of talented intelligent people to work their butts off for years at a time to produce products they personally might never use. HAPPILY will I get rid of Comcast

No one will argue that dealing with Verizon has its trying moments, but after the utterly ludicrous price increases that have been going on for DECADES under the cable industry, the practically zero level of infrastructure improvement until the competition is breathing down their necks, the fact that nearly all cable systems you have in your town and mine were actually paid for by you and me, after all that and more I'll be happy to get rid of Comcast. Oh and before you worry too much about Microsoft, be aware of how much of your cable company they already own and then maybe have a slightly deeper look at those 'digital' cable stations and I think you'll think twice.

Comcast has barely, and I do mean absolutely barely, made the "customer service" grade for modern companies. The idea that you still have to have on site "you wait for them" appointments is ridiculous. The "invisible" limits on downloads, the very fact that they could be giving you a 30/1 mb line (the limit of Docsys 2.0 as I understand it) but simply won't until pressed by competition, is just a sign of their charging you the most they can extract from you while giving you the least they are forced to in return. It should be their company motto. You don't think they could have been using all those 10% fee increases to build fiber for themselves? Oh yes they could. Instead they'll whine to the towns and states for money, or raise fees by some huge %, saying "need to increase core infrastructure rebuilding required" as the reason. They're quite happy to tout all their financial success to investors of course.

I for one will be happy to be rid of them and never look back...
