Rumor: RTM sometime in March
(old news - 02:32PM Monday Jan 24 2005)
tags: software
Citing "sources", the Inquirer claims that Microsoft intends to put the 64 bit version of Windows XP on sale April 29. According to the site, the version will be RTM'd (released to manufacturing) in March - roughly around the same time 64 bit Intel chips show up in via retail channels in the States. 64-bit Pentium 4 Processors started showing up in Japan retail channels late last week.

Its not that hard to do.... A simple recompile should be all it takes in most instances.

All the BSOD's that I have seen on XP in the last seven years were due to bad hardware. Bad memory, geriatric HDD. Can't blame Uncle Bill for that.

I installed the beta on my a64 workstation and it appears to run well. I haven't had a chance to test it much since ther isn't a whole lot of support for it just yet (driverwise anyway). ATI does have drivers for it but when I ran 3DMark it looked like complete garbage. It may be a while before it reaches a mature state.

3DMark is a 32bit program isnt it? If you run a 32bit program in a 64bit environment, it is going to be crap because a 32bit environment has to be emulated. That whole WOW Windows on Windows thing. Emulators take up a lot of resources and are generally pretty slow...

Re: Good; I'd like to try on my 64 bit Athlon lapt

Why does it have to be emulated? AMD64 and EM64T (Intel's version of AMD64 extensions) both support 32-bit code natively. Also, Microsoft has developed the 64-bit version of Windows so it will also run 32-bit software (without emulation, to my understanding). MS removed all legacy 16-bit support but who cares?

Using 32-bit apps isn't as transparent as they advertise - which is why the latest reviews on x64 Windows RC1 indicates there are small number of compatibility problems with existing apps. 32- and 64-bit code can't be used interchangeably. 32-bit apps need 32-bit DLL's and vice versa. For 32-bit apps, the OS uses the WoW64 compatibility mode which results in a (very?) small performance penalty.

Back when Windows 95 was introduced, and there was a lot of 16-bit Windows 3.1 code. In order to allow the 16-bit to call 32-bit code (and vice-versa), Windows used a technique called "thunking". This was part fo a facility knowns as WOW (Windows on Windows). So the 32/64-bit issues will probably be dealt with the same way.

That's exactly how 32/64-bit will be dealt with in Win64. While there is a penalty from the thunking, it is extremely low, something like less than 1% in most situations. Still, my A64 3200+ flies with 32-bit XP, I can't wait to try the RTM of XP64 with some real driver support. As it stands now, I can't boot off RAID with RC1.

A lot of the higher end apps already are supporting the 64 bit arch. Just they are a real b*tch to find a place to get them.

I run xp-64 no issues at all with all my software. Biggest issue i have is the dep on the processor I forgot to turn it off for an app that i spent 2 weeks trying to patch.

If you've the Compaq R3000 series laptop, then you may have problems with drivers. Someone I know tried to put on Win64 Beta and some of the component manufacturers weren't sure they were going to even bother with 64 bit drivers.

Exactly, Ive been running RC1 daily now and aside from driver issues (not MS's fault) its very stable. Without 64 Bit software its still just Windows XP though. AMD might have been early to the game but good software wont be started until Intel announces its joining the party as well and then its really only going to be a gamers OS IMO.

As for the driver issues its not just quirky beta drivers. Make sure to check and see if your current hardware offers 64 Bit drivers... some companies will see this as a chance to offer you new hardware in leu of offering you new drivers for their current line-up.

Of course. Some of Prescott steppings already have EM64T. The upcoming P4 6xx series all have EM64T and that's what MS has been waiting for (well, at least I subscribe to that theory). They'll add EM64T to their legacy processors as well - the 5xx and 3xx.

We were saying that about the Digital Alpha back in the 90s and we still got beat by the less advanced Intel platform. AMD may hold on, but once Intel goes head long into this, AMD is going to have a tough time staying on top, especially since Intel got all the Alpha engineers from Digital/Compaq.

Drivers Needed

Hard to imagine that applications (e.g., Adobe Photoshop) are already limited by the 2GB address space in the 32 bit environment. It's about time for 64 bits.

Of course, the REAL issue is with getting 64 bit drivers that support the really interesting hardware (e.g., highly featured, high performance video cards). When I can run a dual display at high resolution and tune HDTV on time delay I'll be impressed.

Perhaps Microsoft placing the product on sale will speed the development and deployment of these drivers.

Re: Drivers Needed

Most vendors probably have drivers set to release as soon as XP 64 is released. Software will be a different story. It took a while for most software vendors to release 32bit software when the transition started from 16bit.
While XP was in beta you didn't see any drivers until RTM. I had to use win2k drivers for hardware that didn't have drivers built in while beta testing XP. Once XP was released the hardware vendors released the updated drivers. As soon as xp 64 hits the shelves all the vendors will release updated drivers.

Actually, its been time for a long time... I'm amazed that its taken THIS long for Intel, AMD and Microsoft to get on the 64bit bus in a large scale.

64bit OSes and platforms have been around since the mid to late 80s.

It certainly will. However, all the hardware vendors should be in porting mode if they want to survive. Microsoft most certainly would have provided them with development platforms already, so the lag time between the XP64 release and the driver releases should be very short.

Haters, shut the hell up.

Don't like it? Don't buy it.

I am sick and tired of people using wintel boxes, and b*tching about windows. If you are not happy with your OS, there ate plenty of alternatives.

Yet your stupid ass cannot operate anything that was not simplified enough so that a chimp can operate it. That is why you are with Windows, and THAT is why your box gets owned by spyware malware.

Lets be honest, 2k/XP virtually never BSOD's unless drivers/hardware are at fault (Like Nvidia's infinite loop error, etc..)

As for exploits, it is targeted at more, so obviously more are found, as opposed to other platforms. I am not saying that it is as secure as it could ever be, but it is secure enough providing that the user has at least some understanding of wtf they are doing.

I hated Microsoft back in 9x days, since my 9x box was not stable long enough for me to wack off to some vid on the net, and that is why I went to Mandrake, but come 2k and later XP, Microsoft did prove themselves that they CAN make a stable and GOOD OS.

At this time, it is safe to say, that if you have issues with 2k/XP, you simply dont know how to operate a computer properly.

NAT+patched 2k/XP box + user with IQ of over 61 = should have no issues.

Windows XP sixty four bit version will have the same security flaws, vulnerabilities and exploits just like the thirty two bit editions. It's nothing new, just another Windows platform that's overpriced for what it does.

I have tried using the trial version with my FX-55 and it was not finished yet for sure. It did not support almost anything that did not have a 64bit driver that you downloaded yourself. So any devices without 64bit drivers failed to work. Needless to say I uninstalled and installed the 32bit version.

Try it before you critique it....

Instead of making all kinds of statement about how its going to do this or it wont do that. TRY IT... MOST OF YOU ARE WAY WAY OFF!!! I hate MS, but I have used XP for years and not one BSOD. I have had a problem a couple times when I use beta drivers with reboots or when I max out my Video Card and run a game. But never a BSOD. It does take a lot of work to make sure you system with XP is protected because of the way Windows works. Some things are good, some are bad. XP64 has a different way of protecting itself from viruses and such. Do some research before you post here. By not, some of you make yourselves look pretty silly. I have tried XP64, my only issue is the lack of drivers and software. What software I have used is bangin! Well... just my rant and yeah I know I am ranting...

That is the funny part. You ever see them try and install it in advanced mode because they knew windows and were considered advanced. I have seen many crumble at that point.

Complain.

I don't get why you all complain about viruses, I was using my Win XP Home for a whole month w/o a firewall or an anti-virus program, not even an anti-spyware one, conclusion: It's all about the user who uses the software, or whatever.
BTW I was ruining FF and didn't experience any slow downs at all.
You might think I'm dumb doing this but I was bothered by the slowness of windows with all those security programs

edd0e

@patmedia.net

Viruses and XP

I ran my windows xp box for about a year and a half without anti virus or spyware. I decided to put it on one day, just for the heck of it and it found nothing all. So how these people are getting infected, I'm not sure. You just have to be careful about what you do, what you click on (like shooting those damn monkies to get an ipod or psp). There really needs to be a manual that comes with a new computer, or is just on the desktop and you can't do anything until you read the entire thing. Yeah, it may be annoying, but it would prevent a lot of problems that people have with windows and the bashing of MS. I've been running my box for close to 3 years now, and I have only had a BSOD when my hard drive was beginning to kill itself, which has nothing to do with windows. I don't like microsoft because they charge way too much for the licensing of the software, but besides that, I don't have a problem with the company, its the people that use it, that try to blame someone else for their screw ups and lack of knowledge.

Also, I am a computer technician that gets yelled at constantly for our customer's computers not working and how it can't be their fault and i hear "i didn't change anything" , when you find out that they installed kazaa, click on those IPOD ads and open every email attachment they get. People need to take responsibility for when they screw up. And when you people go to porn sites, don't deny it when we have screen shots or a file list of the sites that you've been to under your own username on xp. but thats a whole nother topic, heh heh ...

Free Version is out

As a user of the free version of Win64 and a follower of the Win64 newsgroup hosted by MS, here is my summary.

- Benefit of 64 bit memory addressing in Windows is currently only available in SQL Server
- Benefit of Win64 is that it can address more than 4Gb of RAM in the standard version. Though it will be a couple of more years before people get 4Gb or more standard on their PC's.
- Requires all new drivers. 80 percent of the newsgroup is dedicated to people who didn't read the compatibility sheet. Usually printers and some wireless card. The demands they make are laughable.
- Very few people have Intel EMT64 CPU's to test. 98% of the posters are running AMD64.
- Legacy parallel ports are NOT supported. This one catches everyone off guard. The printer manufacturers will have to make them. (if they do)
- NVidia is way ahead of ATI in making 64 bit drivers.
- 15% is made up of people complaining that some 32 bit DX-7 game runs too slow.
- Roughly 10% of the posters don't know how to burn an ISO image.
- Anti-Virus protection is spotty. Requires loading a 32bit version and then patching it with a 64 bit library update. Many complain it doesn't work.
- About 5% install it on top of the XP Home install and then complain that they can't get XP Home back when they don't like it.

I liken it to the first Windows NT 3.1 release. Everyone complained when it wouldn't support the prevailing CPU (80286) at the time. Everyone complained when you couldn't play games on it. Everyone complained when it didn't look like Windows 95. Now we get to start over again.

Win ver Linux 64

BSOD can happen on any OS...period! Hardware is the issue and drivers. The reason that things take longer to develop for 64Bit Chips is not because Intel is just coming online with a processor, its because of market size...period.
The dollar is the real reason. Developers and hardware manufacturing looks at bang for buck, so buy more and the drivers will show up faster. Intel is getting a free ride on AMD's to market first on this one people. AMD is smaller, faster, and smarter...period!

I can't believe some of the comments on BSOD, Drivers, and related from people...get a life people, use that grey matter......!

I don't work for AMD, MS, Intel...just a developer writting code for the mass of stupid people...hmmm keep up the good work...it's nice to have a job making smarter software for dumb people......FLAME ON!
