Verizon is offering $50,000 on information leading to the arrest of someone who's been cutting their lines in Massachusetts. The company is actively working with the FBI.

Re: well

I wonder if its someone from the dslreports forum ? I don't think but no one can ever be sure. (I thought keeping a bike was hard enough trying to keep safe now it seems like simple things like internet, phone, etc lines are even harder to keep safe sometimes. I wish there was a way to keep everything safe.)

Re: well

Im betting it's one of them in the verizon forum, hoping that if he cuts it they will just come and build up the fiber.

I guess some people really do want fiber bad.

Their fiber deployment ( not in that area though I think ) must really have the competition upset. Or maybe it's a disgruntled employee, customer they upset or a wife whose husband hasn't been home as much as she would like. But that last one wouldn't work would it. This would make hubby have to do even more work. So that could be it. An employee looking for some overtime to pay the bills.:D

3 guesses

@optonline.net

Three guesses:

disgruntled employee
disgruntled customer
competition

I'm leaning towards #1 or #2, because #3 would be easy to find and fix. Just they better not try this with fiber, becuase the second lines are cut- alarm bells will go off and this can be tracked much easier.

Re: well

I'm not ignoring the great problem this person has caused, but whoever this person is, Verizon obviously set them off about something, either DSL shortage or bad phone service.

Or... this guy just wanted FIOS faster like some suggested.

Whatever this person's motivations, it's clear they need serious help.

Re: .

I would be.

The sort of person that does something like this is someone that feels they don't have much too lose on some level. This is personal, not business-related.

People don't risk their livelihood and their freedom to marginally assist (if even at all) the image of their employer, generally speaking, no matter how dedicated of employee they may be. In fact, the more dedicated they are the less likely they'd be to do something like that, knowing that if (more a question of when, actually) it came out that it was (hypothetically speaking) a competing company's employee it'd damage their reputation more then any short-term gain from making Verizon look like it has service issues.

HAHAHA Gettin what they deserve

Good for him! I wish more people would do this! Then they can REALLY spend the money they claim they spend on Maintenance. Probably did it because hes in just the right distance from the C.O. to get DSL, but the SEMI-FUNCTIONAL RETARDS at Verizon cant get the loop clean or stable enough to get him DSL. GOOD for HIM! Hope there are more people like him.

Just goes to show how stupid some people are. Maybe the next cable he cuts is the one to a loved one of yours house and when they need to dial 911, the phone is dead. Then we can all have a chuckle at your expense.

Texas chainsaw massacre 2005 style?

LMFAO. I don't know why but I found it funny when I first read it.

I feel sorry for those folks that got their services cut off. I mean seriously how many people have done something crazy as this guy has by going around cutting hundreds of peoples phone and DSL?

He must have done some serious damage if there is a $50,000 reward. Maybe I should head to Massachusetts and see if I can earn $50,000 by finding the guy.

heh...

....if you had a map of all the fiber conduits you could do a LOT of damage.

mainly because you could find places where no one lives and make a 1 inch cut in the groud no one would ever see. I've heard those cuts are the hardest to find, especially when the OTDR readers can only get you within a few hundred feet.

Not true with fiber. a break is easy to find on short runs since each junction/tap/breakout point has a specific distance to it. Using math you can find it very easily. and track it down to where the break is. However digging it up and patching is another issue one and of itself.

I can't believe this!

All I have to say is You People Amaze Me!!

It seems to me that most of the people that have posted so far in this thread seem to think that this type of vandalism is a big joke and funny or something. I'm sure that the people who lost their phone service because of this are not laughing.

It doesn't matter is you like or dislike Verizon, this is a serious problem. It affects everything from casual calls to business and 911 calling to data transport for hundreds if not thousands of people! The person responsible needs to be caught and prosecuted. I do believe tampering or damaging telephone facilities is a federal offense (for good reason).

For those of you that think this is funny, HA HA, grow up!! You people make me sick!!

Think about it..

how many phone/fiber/cable line are in the US, the random act of destroying one is easy for one to do, knowing chances of getting caught are slim.

Granted a person who does it is more likly to do in own area, so chances of getting cause are higher. But a person who wants to do some damage, just needs to travel to a area, and do his bidding at will, and leave. No one would know the wiser.

Remember accidents cut off thousands of users from net/telephone, think if someone with indent to distrupt could do.

I used to joke the only way I was going to get DSL was to plow car threw the Remote Terminal here to force the upgrade..but I moved and got cable.:P

This guy didn't know what he did

Horrors!
Does this person know what they are doing by cutting those cables?
• They have cut off communications to hundreds of people, some who may depend on the phone for medical reasons & have left them with no way to call for help in case of emergency (911)

• Looking at the map, these seem to be rural/semi rural towns, where the town hall may serve as the police station & fire department (and other emergency services). Now they're without communications!

• And last, but maybe the most important, what if these lines served a medical facility? Now the doctors there can't communicate with others if something comes up that they don't have any information about. And what is they're set up on one of the medical networks? That just went bye-bye

As for fixing the problem, I had to splice a 25 pair cable once - it took me quite a while. Relatively speaking, fixing the fiber would be a snap

Whoever this person may be (disgruntled employee, competitor or whomever), they need to be prosecuted, put away & receive some serious psych help.

This is probably in a area where the sound of a chainsaw might not be uncommon, so they might have gone unnoticed.

And for all of you who think that this is so funny, just think how you would feel if you lost all land line communication & was sick - you have to see the consequences.

I'll admit, though , when I first read it, I though that 'Verizon is screwing people, now someone is fighting back'.

Well Wadda Ya Say?

Well what do you say? I mean really we all know it is a bad thing to do yes,But cmon i really doubt anyone would go around and just butcher lines for no reason it is just not the "typical crime" Obviously they (verizon) have pissed the culprit off some how now i am not condoning this type of behavior,But in the same breath i have to say that this should serve as a wake up call to verizon to say maybe we need to go and look at our business practices from service all the way to employee relations. If a guy decides to MURDER some wires with a chain saw then something somewhere obviously is not right..You know how wise people always say the easiest way to track & fix a problem is to look at the most obvious solutions first, well in that same spirit how about as a company Verizon starts with providing the type of service they SO Openly promise in the ADs (can you hear me now)(our internet speeds are the fastest)and the service aggreements, and take care of the employees the way they tell them they will during orientation, cuz i am sure no one in their right mind signs up for services from a company which flat out tells them we as a company will give you SUB-PAR service and make you believe it is the best we can offer right now due to circumstances out of our control. thats just SHIZZLE DE BULL BULL.. And for that matter no one signs on to work for a company who says, hey we WILL treat you like garbage and throw you out as if that is what you are if we want to!!IMHO i believe if Verizon addresses those issues then they would have a few more wires left intact:D And alot more happy faces on both ends of their business, internally as well as end user level

Yes you can call 911 with a cell phone. However...
-Cell calls are not always routed to the correct call center causing a delay in response
-Not everyone knows where they are all the time
-ALI (Automatic Location Information) information is not even close to being well integrated with our cellular systems and CAD software
-Large scale dispatch centers often use phone lines to transmit the voice signal to remote transmitters to cover that large area

If there were a loss of life or property, and response was delayed because of this individual's actions, they would be liable for those events, civil and criminally liable.

BTW, when your state runs a ballot issue for integrating automatic location information on cellular systems, vote yes.
