I agree, 10mb is just silly, I see no point. Now you give me 5mb/3mb, and I'm sold!

I agree. They need to boost the upload speed and slightly increase the price and allow home-based servers. That would really put a hurting on web hosting providers.

Ambient Completes First Project in New York City
Tuesday October 26, 10:25 am ET
First to Commercially Deploy Second Generation Chipset Technology in North America

MADRID, SPAIN and NEWTON, MA--(MARKET WIRE)--Oct 26, 2004 -- Ambient Corporation (OTC BB:ABTG.OB - News), a leader in Power Line Communications (PLC) and a featured exhibitor at the IQPC International Powerline Communications Conference in Madrid announced today the successful completion of its joint project with Consolidated Edison (NYSE:ED - News) in the installation of a communications system in Con Edison's new First Avenue Steam Tunnel in Manhattan.
Kevin Burke, President of Con Edison, said, "We are pleased with the results of the project and its cost effectiveness. This state-of-the-art monitoring and communications system will serve us well."

Ambient, the first US company to incorporate the latest chipset from DS2 into its system, utilized DS2's second generation PLC technology, capable of running at speeds up to 200 Mbps, to build a multi-purpose communications network in an industrial environment. The network is utilized in Con Edison's new tunnel to monitor environmental conditions, the state of the steam main, and to provide telephony service in the tunnel utilizing the voice over IP (VoIP) technology provided by the DS2 chipset. This single network is a cost-effective solution that provides a variety of services that would traditionally have required multiple technologies and wiring systems.

Con Edison's steam system is unique to Manhattan. It serves about 1,800 customers from 105 miles of steam mains, stretching from Lower Manhattan to 96th Street.

Ram Rao, Chief Network Architect at Ambient, stated, "After years of successful demonstrations, Ambient is moving to a new level with near term plans to begin aggressively marketing its proven technology and equipment. The success of this project is another key step in Ambient's path to being the industry leader in PLC system design and installation."

"We at DS2 are pleased to have partners such as Ambient who have demonstrated their belief and commitment to aggressively pursue the market applications of the latest technology. They continue to demonstrate their market leadership in the Americas by proving the effectiveness of our latest technology in a real world environment. We are pleased to have a pioneering partner installing innovative technology in the company named after the man who pioneered electricity," added Jorge Blasco, CEO of DS2.

Re: Finally

I cant speak for other RCN locations, but here in NYC people will literally not move into an apartment if the building requires tentants to use RCN. I kid you not. They have the worlds worst cable TV as well.

wifi4milez: Any building by NYC law is required to allow time warner in regardless. Any person in a building that will not allow time warner in should contact the NYC DOITT. If one tenant wants service, Time Warner has to be allowed in. That is NYC city law.

RCN's picture quality is indeed less to be desired and they use microwave feeds and the picture quality is flaky. I switched to Time Warner. RCN needs to fix this and then they will get customers back. RCN has a total new team and we shall see what happens going forward however.

There are certain buildings where the management has deals with RCN, and they will not allow TWC in. In fact certian property managemers will only allow RCN in all of their buildings. I am not a lawyer, however this has been going on for years and as I mentioned, people have opted not to move into the RCN buildings due to the terrible service. I have even seen the RCN clause listed on a lease that my friend signed.

I know you can complain to DoITT and all but how far is that likely to get you? I've dealt a lot with the DoITT bureacrats in my last job (as a contractor for another city agency) and while you may get some action, you also might be wasting your time.

I knew of a friend of mine who lived in a building in Brooklyn who was forced to take DirecTV.

I used to live in a building serviced by RCN, but it was RCN microwave which was really crappy. Then I moved out to a part of Queens where Time Warner refused to provide digital service and I had to get RCN for cable modem service.

Regular RCN isn't so bad but the microwave RCN with one way cable modem blows goats.

Wonder how much upload?
update: it's 800, not bad but not good, too much download I think, and the upload will be almost the same as what comcast will be giving if you have the 10+ bucks package.

Sweet Lord

My god, I hope other cable companies will follow. This is great. A lot of people tend to think 10Mbps is overkill. But why? 100Mbps is the standard in some countries. With 10Mbps, we'd start to catch up. It's not that the cable system can't do it, it's that it would cut into profits. I hope my ISP, Comcast sees this and gets the idea. Good Job RCN!

Re: Sweet Lord

I can't fault Comcast too much, they've upgraded speeds two years in a row. I'm particularly impressed with Comcast's new 5000/768 tier. That's quite a big leap in available upstream speed. It wasn't too long ago when Comcast customers were stuck with 128kbps.

Sorry if I made it sound that way. Comcast is doing a good job, one of the best at being near the top. I added that since that's my ISP. The 5/768 tier is a very big step and I thank Comcast for that. I was just trying to state if one can do it (never-the-less coming out of bankruptcy), I know the rest can including Comcast.

I would cut Comcrap more slack if they relaxed their TOS/AUP to be more like DSL. I compare my Comcast terms with my DSL agreement and it's like night and day. Then there's the non-CATV penalty us ATTBi customers used to not face.

In looking at new competition around here with 5000/2000 Verizon FIOS and Time Warner dishing out 5000/512 as their standard packages in Orange and Riverside counties Comcast is still lacking compared to some of their peers here.

(Not a Rumor)Confirmed RCN is going up to 10mbps

I just talked to RCN sales and they said RCN is going up to 10mbps in certain markets. Those markets are new york and Massachusetts. According to the rep they have not determined if there will be a price increase, but the upgrades are set to start in Mid Febuary of this year.

Give me the damn two way

It's ridiculous that RCN, in the year 2005, still doesn't have the much needed two way lines in some places. Get with the program, stop bumping the already high download speed up, and lay the damn lines so everyone can have two way access.

I know all the cablevision customers are laughing

Optimum Online has been 10000/1000 since they started I think. Even though I don't have it anymore I miss it a lot. Even with roadrunner's upgrade to 5mb/s its still not the same. And the upload...ahhh the upload.

Its these companies following cablevision.

You can add all the download you want, they have the capacity for it. I guess they don't want the MPAA or RIAA breathing down their necks because of a few customers' frequent habits.

Is TWC NYC Listening??

Well, where the heck is TWC in all of this? I know I just got my speed increase but come on... I pay the $60 per month for basic RoadRunner service without cable tv service. I'd like to get a little more for my money. I think a 6Mbps Down/1.5Mbps Up isn't so bad to ask for. I could be wrong though.. it's a dream... I can dream...

More upload please!

i'd have to agree with some of the posters, i would like to see more upload as well, at least 1.5mbps i'd be happy with that.10mbps down would be nice for some bragging rights, but as soon as someone asked what my upload was i would feel like the kid at the playground with cool toy, but not the ultra mega cool toy

Is your setup correct? I have no issues running VPN between home and work. Home is 5MB/512 and work is 768K/768K. I use IPSEC from my home XP box to a Linksys BEFVP41 router. I remote desktop back and forth daily with all options set. In other words, desktop background and the works.

Maybe you have some packet overhead that is the root of your issue?

Powerline Broadband Specs To Mesh 200 MBPS

Powerline Broadband Specs To Mesh

The HomePlug Powerline Alliance has decided to opt for a specification that will meld broadband distributed over power lines inside a building with broadband delivered over the power lines (BPL) to a building. The new BPL specification now in development, to be called HomePlug BPL, will mate with HomePlug AV, the 200 Mb/s standard currently in the in the finalization stage. The formulation of HomePlug BPL is still in an early stage, with the Alliance currently writing the needed markets-requirement document.

The decision to mate HomePlug BPL and HomePlug AV holds forth the promise of a future in which users simply plug in their computers, and they’re instantly on an IP network all the way back to their ISP’s point of presence. For a look at the details of the Alliance’s emerging specifications and the implications for the broadband industry as a whole, see this week’s issue of Broadband Business Forecast.

ALERT> DSL/CABLE tough competitor: BROADBAND OVER POWER OUTLETS !!!

RE: Researchers See Gigabit Data Over Power Lines

Wed Jan 5, 2005 04:23 PM ET WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Engineers at Penn State University said on Wednesday they had found a way for power lines to transmit data to homes at rates far faster than high-speed Internet connections from cable and telephone companies.
Broadband service over power lines has been highly touted by equipment makers and federal regulators as a possible competitor to cable and telephone services that handle nearly all of the 30 million U.S. residential broadband connections.

But despite dozens of trials, few electric utilities have attempted to sell the service to customers, citing cost and technical problems. The Penn State researchers said while the technology would improve, lowering the costs of power-line broadband would remain challenging.

Power-line broadband systems available today typically promise data speeds of roughly one megabit to three megabits per second, similar to cable and digital subscriber line, or DSL, service.

The Penn State engineers, Pouyan Amirshahi and Mohsen Kavehrad, estimated in a research paper released Wednesday that their system could deliver data at close to one gigabit per second over medium-voltage electrical lines in ideal conditions, with speeds of hundreds of megabits per second available to home users.

Their system would uses repeaters placed every one kilometer, (0.62 miles) and requires power lines to have been modified to reduce interference with the data signals. The engineers said their estimates were based on computer models, and that the data speeds available in a real-world version would depend on how many repeaters a power company used.

The Penn State study was funded with a grant from AT&T Corp. (T.N: Quote, Profile, Research) , which has taken part in prior trials of power-line broadband.
