Sharman/Altnet patent money grab
(old news - 11:38AM Tuesday Jan 11 2005)
tags: legal · Fileswapping
Sharman Networks continues their effort to profit from file-sharing, even while customers flee their spyware-laden Kazaa software. This time Sharman (in association with Altnet) has sent a letter to the developers of BearShare, Limewire, MashBoxx and Shareaza, claiming they're infringing on their "TrueNames" DRM. "TrueNames" is simply their attempt to cash in on an old concept: strong hashes as hashtable keys.

And that's sad as there used to be a bit left in the World just a few decades ago.

Re: no honor among theives

Unfortunately, this is yet another example of patenting "prior art".

It will be quite easy to overturn the patent, considering people have been using MD5 and other hashing algorithms for years.

Years before Sharman Networks ever dreamed up Kazaa MD2, MD4, MD5 hashing algorithms were developed by a company called Rivest back from 1989 to 1991. »www.rsasecurity.com/rsalabs/node.asp?id=2253

They steal the idea, change 6 lines of code and then try and patent all encryption ideas for the past 50 years. Just more of the practice of software development by lawyer instead of by programmers.

Sharman is acting like a bunch of spoiled adolescent brats. Pathetic. It's a last gasp before bankruptcy.

no honor among theives

the Sad thing is that KaZaA owns or runs the FastTrack P2P stack or protocol.

Sharman needs to get shut down by its own spy bloated wares.

There is Honor, but rarely seen. Count yourself blessed if you have come across it and even more blessed if you are it.

so these companies change a single a line of code and they are home free, because a patent convers the device and not its use. this would be like UTC-Carrier trying to patent air conditioning by refrigeration.

Apparently,

this was bound to happen. why can't they label all P2P applications as "cannot be patented". Now, I'm all for that (unless I start writing P2P code).

Wow... that's retarded

So essentially they are trying to say they are the only people that are allowed to use Hashtables with strong key values.

I'v been programming in c# for the last 2 years... hashtables are not a new concept.

Flame them, Vinnie!

I think Vinnie Falco, the creator of Bearshare
ought to flame Sharman, and do it big-time. Maybe
even do it on a website like Zeropaid, telling
everyone what a bunch of idiots Sharman is for trying
to patent file hashing, something that existed long
before they did.

I think it ought to be along the lines of the response
letters that piratebay.org sent the MPAA, and just as
nasty, telling their lawyers where they can stick
certain body parts and so on...

Re: Flame them, Vinnie!

Except that vinnie falco and all the other p2p profiteers would probably do the same if they had a chance

how someone can make a program with almost no purpose other than breaking copyrights can cry infringement is beyond insane

p2p for money=evil. period.
